"Managing Undernutrition in Pediatric Oncology" is a collaborative consensus statement of the Polish Society for Clinical Nutrition of Children and the Polish Society of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology. The early identification and accurate management of malnutrition in children receiving anticancer treatment are crucial components to integrate into comprehensive medical care. Given the scarcity of high-quality literature on this topic, a consensus statement process was chosen over other approaches, such as guidelines, to provide comprehensive recommendations. Nevertheless, an extensive lite

Over the last three decades, there has been significant changes in the lifestyles of commmunities, including food habits, and food purchasing and consumption patterns in the Southeast Asian region. As a result, there is a definite change in the food and nutrition issues in the region. Nutritional deficiencies in many of these countries are slowly being decreased in magnitude. On the other hand, the significant proportions of the population are now faced with the other facet of the malnutrition problem, namely diet-related chronic diseases. However, because of the different stages of socio-econ

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) targets the immune system, making an infected person susceptible to infection and neoplasm because of an impaired ability to mount an adequate immune response. Malnutrition and its complications can further render an HIV-infected person susceptible to opportunistic infection and reduced effectiveness and tolerance to medications and other therapies. Though effective antiretroviral treatments have dramatically reduced death rates in the United States and Canada, HIV-infected people face a lifetime of vigilant polypharmacy to control HIV and associated complica

The evidence for the effect of nutritional status on outcome is reviewed. It is concluded that poor nutritional status, is reversible, whether therapy is given or not, and that initial malnutrition presages poor outcome. However, reversal of the nutritional state does not affect outcome unless the antineoplastic therapy is inherently effective.

Head and neck cancer patients present with special problems in nutritional homoeostasis because of local phayngeal discomfort and obstruction and difficulty with deglutition due to either the neoplasm or the surgical alterations in the upper aerodigestive tract. Pretreatment malnutrition and vitamin deficiency are only compounded by the nutritional stress imposed by radiation and surgery. Reduced wound complications occur if the patients are nutritionally replenished before treatment. While nasogastric feedings will suffice in many patients, rapid nutritional restoration by this method is limi

Clinical trials play a vital role in developing new medications for nutrition-related diseases, such as phenylketonuria (PKU), obesity, and diabetes. Dietary management is often a critical component of these trials, as consistency in diet can significantly influence outcomes and the evaluation of drug efficacy. While the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) provides guidance on managing and monitoring diets in clinical trials, the extent to which these practices are implemented remains unclear. This review examines diet management practices in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials for weight loss, type 2

The nutrition management guideline for very-long chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCAD) is the fourth in a series of web-based guidelines focusing on the diet treatment for inherited metabolic disorders and follows previous publication of guidelines for maple syrup urine disease (2014), phenylketonuria (2016) and propionic acidemia (2019). The purpose of this guideline is to establish harmonization in the treatment and monitoring of individuals with VLCAD of all ages in order to improve clinical outcomes. Six research questions were identified to support guideline development on: nutr

Carotenoids are essential components for human nutrition and health, mainly due to their antioxidant and pro-vitamin A activity. Foods with enhanced carotenoid content and composition are essential to ensure carotenoid feasibility in malnourished population of many countries around the world, which is critical to alleviate vitamin A deficiency and other health-related disorders. The pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis is currently well understood, key steps of the pathways in different plant species have been characterized and the corresponding genes identified, as well as other regulatory elem

Catheter-associated infection is a frequent complication in patients with indwelling intravenous catheters used for administration of total parenteral nutrition and/or cancer chemotherapy. Thirty-seven catheter-associated infections in 19 patients were identified in our retrospective survey conducted for the period from January 1, 1982, through December 31, 1982. Fourteen patients were receiving total parenteral nutrition for gastrointestinal disorders, and five were receiving total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy for underlying malignancy. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated

Malnutrition significantly affects children's health and social well-being, leading to growth disorders, such as underweight and short stature. This study investigated the impact of nutrition education based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model and the optimal food basket recommended by the Ministry of Health on the growth status and dietary intake of malnourished children aged 7 to 12 years. A controlled trial was conducted with 254 malnourished children in Kermanshah, randomly divided into intervention (127) and control groups. Data were collected at three intervals: before, 6, and 12 weeks after th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The medical management of short bowel syndrome frequently requires lifelong parenteral nutrition. Methods of increasing intestinal absorption and reducing parenteral nutrition dependence, by improving postresection intestinal adaptation, are increasingly being explored. Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is an important intestinotrophic growth factor and mediator of intestinal adaptation. This review summarizes our current understanding of GLP-2 physiology and provides an update on clinical trials in short bowel syndrome and related conditions.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is growin

Puncture gastrostomies--percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and radiologically assisted gastrostomy--are minimally invasive methods to ensure an approach for the administration of enteral nutrition. These methods replaced the insertion of tubes during surgery (surgical gastrostomy). Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is inserted by means of a gastroscope, usually by the pull method, radiologically assisted gastrostomy (RAG) is implemented after insufflation of the stomach by a thin tube directly across the abdominal wall by the push method. In oncological patients it is preferable to ad

Defaecation disorders may be subsumed in three categories: Inability to control motions = incontinence. Difficulty of evacuation = constipation [inertia coli, outlet obstruction]. Impeded defaecation: Rectocele, enterocele, intussusception. Etiology, examination and therapy are described in detail. Characteristic complaints of patients are listed and matched with probable diagnoses. Beside routine proctologic examination endosonography, estimation of transit time, endoscopy and defecography are discussed. The role of nutrition is stressed and emphasis layed on fibre and fluid intake. The advic

INTRODUCTION: The number of people diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) continues to increase in most parts of the world. Although the exact etiology of this chronic intestinal disease is not fully understood, nutritional factors appear to play key roles. Furthermore, individuals with IBD are at increased risk of adverse nutritional impacts, including micronutrient deficiencies.
AREAS COVERED: This review aims to summarize recent reports focusing on nutritional factors relevant to the development of IBD and to also review data on nutritional deficiencies seen in individuals with IB
