[The retinal nerve fiber layer in retrobulbar neuritis].

In the course of 1 year we investigated 32 patients suffering from retrobulbar neuritis, using photographs of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). All photographs revealed defects of the RNFL in the area of the papillomacular bundle. These observations were compared with photographs of eyes not affected by any ophthalmological diseases. No loss of retinal nerve fiber bundles was found in any of these cases. One remarkable finding of this study was that 90% of the patients with retrobulbar neuritis also had defects in the RNFL of the contralateral eye.

Broadband resonant optical gyroscope using dual acousto-optic frequency modulation and closed-loop interrogation.

Broadband-source-driven resonant fiber-optic gyroscopes provide a promising route to suppress coherence-related parasitic effects while retaining a resonator-based differential-frequency discriminator. However, existing interrogation schemes still rely heavily on phase-modulator-based frequency shifting, which can introduce reset transients, half-wave-voltage drift, residual intensity modulation and harmonic distortion. Here, we demonstrate a broadband resonant optical gyroscope based on dual acousto-optic frequency modulation and closed-loop resonance interrogation. A broadband ASE source int

Case Report: Bilateral Cecocentral Visual Field Defect Secondary to Congenital Optic Disc Pit.

SIGNIFICANCE: Congenital optic disc pits are known to cause complications, commonly maculopathy due to retinoschisis and/or neurosensory retinal detachment. Retinal nerve fiber layer defects with associated visual field defects without maculopathy are another complication and can result in decreased visual function but have rarely been reported in the literature, especially bilaterally. PURPOSE: This case report describes a patient with bilateral cecocentral visual field defects due to congenital optic nerve pits without associated maculopathy. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old Black man presented

Retinal ganglion cells.

How do we perceive the beautiful and rich world around us? Light from the external environment is focused onto the retina, our visual sensory organ. Photons are captured by photoreceptors - light sensors within the retina - and converted into electrical signals. These electrical signals are transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve. If each optic nerve transmits a 'pixel' of the visual scene, then the total number of optic nerve fibers defines our biological 'resolution'. Humans possess approximately one million fibers, meaning the image sent from the retina to the brain (retinal image)

Advanced Morphological and Functional Magnetic Resonance Techniques in Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease that is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Recent data documented that glaucoma is not limited to the retinal ganglion cells but that it also extends to the posterior visual pathway. The diagnosis is based on the presence of signs of glaucomatous optic neuropathy and consistent functional visual field alterations. Unfortunately these functional alterations often become evident when a significant amount of the nerve fibers that compose the optic nerve has been irreversibly lost. Advanced morphological and functional magnetic resonance (MR) techniqu

Junction Physics and Architectural Paradigms in Optoelectronic Semiconductor Fibers.

Optoelectronic fibers are emerging as a foundational platform for distributed sensing, energy harvesting, optical communication in wearable electronics, soft robotics, and embodied intelligence. Unlike planar optoelectronic devices, fibers must intrinsically integrate light emission, detection, and modulation within scalable, deformable textile networks. In one-dimensional semiconductor fibers, device performance is ultimately constrained by junction formation under geometrically confined and dynamically evolving processing conditions, yet a unified framework for understanding and designing su

All-fiber delivery of 1.3 kW laser power through a hollow-core anti-resonant fiber with a 14 μm mode field diameter.

Hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (HC-ARFs) provide an attractive platform for high-power laser delivery because most of the optical field propagates in air, enabling high damage thresholds, weak light-silica interaction, and low optical nonlinearity. Here, we demonstrate all-fiber delivery of 1338 W continuous-wave laser power through a 2-m HC-ARF with a 14-µm mode-field diameter and a coupling efficiency of 97.1%. Efficient coupling is achieved by fusion splicing a mode-matched solid-core delivery fiber to the HC-ARF with an anti-reflection-coated end face and optimized offset-arc parameters.

Dual Kretschmann and Otto configuration fiber surface plasmon resonance biosensor.

We present a dual-resonance fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for biological analysis. The sensing element was fabricated by sequentially sputtering layers of indium tin oxide (ITO) (100 nm thickness) and Au (35 nm thickness) on the surface of an optical fiber. The refractive index dispersion effect of ITO material led to resonances in the near infrared and visible wavelength regions. The refractive index of ITO is larger than the optical fiber in visible spectral area (400 to 733nm), such that the structure is a typical Kretschmann configuration surface plasmon resonance sensor. Optic nerve axons and acquired alterations in the appearance of the optic disc.

The pathophysiologic events in optic nerve axons have recently been recognized as crucial to an understanding of clinically significant acquired alterations in the ophthalmoscopic appearance of the optic disc. Stasis and related abnormalities of axonal transport appear to explain most aspects of optic nerve head swelling, including optic disc drusen and retinal cottonwool spots. Loss of axoplasm and axonal death can be invoked to interpret optic disc pallor, thinning and narrowing of rim tissue, changes in the size and outline of the optic cup, laminar dots, atrophy of the retinal nerve fiber

[Simulation of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy by optic nerve sheath meningioma].

BACKGROUND: The optic nerve sheath meningioma usually presents with a diffuse atrophy of the disc and a diffuse depression of the visual field. Applying this rule too rigidly can lead to a false diagnosis. PATIENT: A 45y-old-woman presented with atrophy of the upper disc and a corresponding altitudinal field defect in her right eye. AION was diagnosed. Seventeen years later the patient returned with an exophthalmus. The disc was atrophic and a shunt vessel connected the central retinal vein with the choroid. CT revealed an orbital mass. The diagnosis of an optic nerve sheath meningioma was ma

Activation of elastin mRNA expression in human optic nerve heads with primary open-angle glaucoma.

Elastin is the major protein of elastic fibers and is responsible for the elastic recoil. Elastic fibers are a major component of the extracellular matrix in the human lamina cribrosa and undergo marked changes in primary open-angle glaucoma. Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical analysis demonstrated fragmentation of elastic fibers, accumulation of nonfibrillar elastic material, and bundles of microfibrils in the core of the cribriform plates in primary open-angle glaucoma. The changes in elastic fibers increased with the progression of the disease and strongly suggested abnormal biosynthesi

Effect of hypercapnia and hypoxia on arytenoideus muscle activity in normal adult humans.

The electrical activity of the arytenoideus muscle, a vocal cord adductor, was measured in 14 normal adult humans during progressive isocapnic hypoxia and progressive hyperoxic hypercapnia. Electromyograms of the arytenoideus were obtained with intramuscular hooked-wire electrodes implanted by means of a fiber-optic nasopharyngoscope. Correct placement of the electrodes was confirmed by discharge patterns during voluntary maneuvers. In three of the subjects, respiratory-related arytenoideus activity was not present during quiet breathing or chemical stimulation. During quiet breathing in the 1

Physiological characteristics of ovine pyloric sphincter.

A special probe was validated to record in situ pyloric sphincter activity by changes in fiber-optic light transmission and sleeve pressure associated with the propagation of antroduodenal contractions, the onset of the phase of regular spiking activity (RSA) of the migrating myoelectric complex, the RSA-like events elicited by duodenal acidification, and the pharmacological stimulation of the gastroduodenal junction. Rapid changes in light transmission associated with antroduodenal contractions were super-imposed on slow variations, suggesting the existence of both phasic and tonic components

LSTM-assisted OFDR for DMGD characterization of a short few-mode fiber.

We demonstrate an LSTM-assisted optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) method for differential modal group delay (DMGD) characterization of short few-mode fibers. Sparse phase-domain resampling is first applied to compensate for laser sweep nonlinearity with a low sampling rate. Then, the resampled beat signal is extrapolated by an LSTM network to improve the resolution. In a 5-m single-mode fiber, the distance resolution is improved from 4.95 mm to 0.44 mm with a 20.74-GHz sweep bandwidth. The method resolves the overlapped LP01 and LP11 modal peaks in 1-m and 6-m two-mode fibers, yiel

Cavity and waveguide quantum electrodynamics with atoms and optical nanofibers.

Optical nanofibers provide a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interactions at the single-quantum level, a central goal of quantum optics. Their subwavelength diameter supports tightly confined guided modes with strong evanescent fields, enabling efficient coupling between photons and nearby atoms. By incorporating fiber Bragg gratings, nanofibers can form fully fiber-integrated high-finesse cavities, combining strong atom-photon coupling with efficient and low-loss optical input-output interfacing in the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). In parallel, nanofibe

Perichiasmal tumors: diagnostic and prognostic features.

A review of 49 tumors compressing the intracranial optic nerve, optic chiasm, or optic tract revealed that the majority of patients had symptoms and signs of visual loss predominantly affecting one eye. Seventy-seven per cent of patients had a relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD), and 96% had a hemianopic defect in at least one eye. All patients had either a RAPD or a hemianopic defect. The junctional pattern of visual field defects was nearly as common (39%) as the classic bitemporal pattern (46%). Many fields contained a mixture of nerve fiber bundle and hemianopic defects; the hemianop
