Application of Henna as a Durable Skin Marker in Orthopedic Surgery.

Background Many orthopedic procedures require skin marking well before surgery. Marks made with most conventional marking pens fade with vigorous skin preparation required before orthopedic procedures, whereas marks with henna may safely last almost up to three weeks. Thereby, we intend to describe applications of henna, a readily available, cost-effective material, as a durable skin marker for various indications in orthopedics. Methods A total of 120 patients with varied indications for skin marking were randomized into two equal-sized groups of 60 each. Group A patients were marked with hen…

Initial experiences with NAM-assisted primary repair of the BCLP deformity.

BACKGROUND: Primary surgical repair of the bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) deformity is challenging. Infant Orthopedic (IO) procedures are often used to assist surgical reconstruction of normal anatomy. Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) is a presurgical infant orthopedic procedure that attempts to reduce the cleft nasal deformity, in addition to the lip and alveolus, leading to an esthetic primary surgical repair. OBJECTIVE: NAM provides the surgical team with a better foundation for an easier and more esthetic single stage repair at the level of nose in addition to the lip and alveolus. METH

Preoperative anxiety assessment in orthopaedic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Preoperative anxiety (Pop-Anx) is highly prevalent among patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. Pop-Anx can stem from fears related to the procedure, anaesthesia, or the recovery process. It has been linked to poorer postoperative outcomes, including greater pain, reduced function, and a lower quality of life. Despite its clinical significance, Pop-Anx is inconsistently assessed due to a lack of standardized tools and clear guidelines. The objective was to identify instruments used for measuring Pop-Anx in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgeries. METHODS: A systematic search was

Surgical Management of Meniscus Tears: Update on Indications and Techniques for Repair.

Because of the crucial role of the menisci in maintaining cartilage and joint health, meniscal tears affect the long-term health of the knee. Although partial meniscectomy has a role in the treatment of complex degenerative tears and tears with low healing capacity, advances in the concepts and understanding of meniscal repair, along with improvements in repair techniques and instrumentation, have expanded the indications for meniscal repair. With appropriate patient selection and preoperative planning, repair of meniscal tears can lower the rate of degenerative changes when compared with meni

The characterization of frailty in spine surgery: a systematic review of frailty indices.

PURPOSE: Frailty is a key predictor of postoperative outcomes in spine surgery, yet its definition varies widely across studies. Most research relies on comorbidity-based indices like the modified frailty index (mFI), overlooking the multidimensional nature of frailty. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify the frailty indices in use, assess their prevalence, and evaluate their association with clinical outcomes. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science identified 34 relevant cohort studies on elective spine procedures us

Defining accurate terminology for post-injury weightbearing instructions.

AIMS: Weightbearing instructions after musculoskeletal injury or orthopaedic surgery are a key aspect of the rehabilitation pathway and prescription. The terminology used to describe the weightbearing status of the patient is variable; many different terms are used, and there is recognition and evidence that the lack of standardized terminology contributes to confusion in practice. METHODS: A consensus exercise was conducted involving all the major stakeholders in the patient journey for those with musculoskeletal injury. The consensus exercise primary aim was to seek agreement on a standardi

Minimally Invasive Peroneal Tenodesis Assisted by Peroneal Tendoscopy: Technique and Preliminary Results.

Introduction: Peroneal disorders are a common cause of ankle pain and lateral instability and have been described in as much as 77% of patients with lateral ankle instability. Clicking, swelling, pain, and tenderness in the peroneal tendons track are frequent symptoms, but they can be confused with other causes of lateral ankle pain. The management of peroneal disorders can be conservative or surgical. When the conservative treatment fails, surgery is indicated, and open or tendoscopic synovectomy, tubularization, tenodesis or tendon transfers can be performed. The authors present a surgical t

Primary Stability and Bone Contact Loading Evaluation of Suture and Screw based Coracoid Graft Fixation for Anterior Glenoid Bone Loss.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction techniques for anterior glenoid bone loss have seen a trend from screws to suture-based fixations. However, comparative biomechanical data, including primary fixation and glenoid-graft contact pressure mapping, are limited. HYPOTHESIS: Suture-based bone block cerclage (BBC) and suspensory suture button (SB) techniques provide similar primary fixation and cyclic stability to double-screw fixation but with higher contact loading at the bony interface. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: In total, 60 cadaveric scapulae were prepared to simulate anteri

Surgical Outcomes in Charcot Arthropathy.

Treatment of Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) of the foot and ankle remains challenging for both patients and surgeons. Nonoperative treatment with cast/orthosis immobilization has long been the mainstay of treatment, but surgical intervention has gained interest to improve poor long-term outcomes. A review of existing data on the operative management of CN demonstrates the potential benefits but also the continued risks associated with treatment. Additionally, a retrospective review of cohorts managed with limited surgical interventions (wound debridements, exostectomies, and other surgical proc

Editorial Commentary: Hyperlaxity Is a Common Factor in Failed Arthroscopic Bankart Repair.

Hyperlaxity is a common factor in failed arthroscopic Bankart repair. The best treatment for patients with instability, hyperlaxity, and minimal bone loss is still controversial. Patients with hyperlaxity often have subluxations rather than frank dislocation, and concurrent traumatic structural lesions are infrequent. Conventional arthroscopic Bankart repair with or without capsular shift poses a risk of recurrence because of soft tissue insufficiency. The Latarjet is not a good procedure in patients with hyperlaxity and instability, especially an inferior component, and risks include a higher
