PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The human pulmonary system can be affected by a variety of parasites. This review focuses on the most common parasitic infestations involving the lung, except for protozoon disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: In many parasitic lung conditions, the clinical manifestations and the imaging findings are non-specific and can make diagnosis challenging. Hydatid disease and paragonimiasis involve the lung directly. Chronic schistosomiasis can lead to pulmonary hypertension. Strongyloides stercoralis infestation is capable of transforming into a fulminant fatal disease. In many types of nema…

A rare case of a newborn girl presenting with a mass representing an aborted parasitic twin attached to the back in the midline over the lumbosacral region (parasitic rachipagus) is reported. Rudimentary digits were attached to the mass, and in one area, the overlying skin resembled scrotal skin. A depression resembling an anal dimple was also present on the surface of the mass. Investigations showed a well-developed long bone and other small bones within the parasite, and sacral spina bifida in the autosite. Successful surgical excision of the parasitic mass was performed. A review of the lit

Parasitic dead-ends occur when a parasite is unable to establish a permanent interaction in an unnatural host. Although the likelihood of successful reproduction by the pathogenic agent is nul, parasitic dead-end heralds capture of new parasites and therefore expansion of the host range. Angiostrongyliasis due to A. cantonensis or A. costaricensis, anisakiasis, Ancylostoma caninum infection, gnathostomiasis and sparganosis are undoubtedly emerging zoonoses of particular medical interest. Prevention of these diseases relies on abstinence from eating raw meat from invertebrates or cold-blooded (…

Humans are infected by four recognized species of malaria parasites. The last of these to be recognized and described is Plasmodium ovale. Like the other malaria parasites of primates, this parasite is only transmitted via the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. The prepatent period in the human ranges from 12 to 20 days. Some forms in the liver have delayed development, and relapse may occur after periods of up to 4 years after infection. The developmental cycle in the blood lasts approximately 49 h. An examination of records from induced infections indicated that there were an average of…

Recent advances in the fields of molecular biology, epidemiology and infectious diseases have led to significant revelations to clarify the relationship between cancer and infective agents. This article reviews the relationship between parasitic infections and carcinogenesis and the possible mechanisms involved. Few parasites, e.g., Schistosoma haematobium and Opisthorchis viverrini have been found to be strongly associated with bladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma respectively. The evidence for the association of several other parasites and cancers has also been postulated.

IGF-I and PTH have synergistic actions on bone and some effects of the anabolic actions of PTH are mediated by local production of IGF-I, as has been shown in vitro and in vivo studies both in animals and humans. PTH can induce skeletal IGF-I expression both in vitro and in vivo. In chondrocytes, IGF-I synthesis is under GH control, whereas in osteoblasts its synthesis is fundamentally under the control of PTH. PTH stimulates the synthesis of IGF-I via a cAMP-dependent mechanism, and this factor has pro-differentiating and prosurvival effects on osteoblasts. In in vitro studies, IGF-I and PTH

INTRODUCTION: Human gnathostomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the ingestion of foods contaminated with the larvae of various species of Gnathostoma. This zoonosis is currently endemic in Asia and Central America.
CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old French woman resident in Vietnam presented with intermittent pruritic swelling of the hand, present for one year, coupled with eosinophilia. The patient's history and serological testing confirmed the suspected diagnosis of gnathostomiasis. A favorable outcome was attained on treatment with albendazole.
DISCUSSION: This case, together with several o

Parasitic apicomplexans are responsible for some of the most severe worldwide health problems, including malaria, toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis. These parasites are characterized by a bifunctional enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate synthase (DHFR-TS), which has a crucial role in pyrimidine biosynthesis. Inhibitors of DHFR have been successful in the treatment of toxoplasmosis and malaria. However, there is currently no effective therapy for cryptosporidiosis, and despite early successes against malaria, resistance to DHFR inhibitors in malaria parasites has now become a global p…

Genital filariasis is common in endemic areas of the world. However, filariasis cannot be eliminated from the differential diagnosis of scrotal swellings, as international travel is more frequent. We report a case in a patient in London, UK.

Leishmanioses are a group of parasitic diseases that affect man and other mammals. They are caused by different species of trypanosomatids of the genus Leishmania Ross, 1903 and have tegumentary and/or visceral manifestations. The distribution of this re-emerging disease, which is found throughout the world (except in Antarctica), is influenced by various factors linked to both human activity and climatic change. The heteroecious life cycle of the Leishmania includes an invertebrate host (sandflies of the Phlebotomidae family). The dog is the main reservoir for many of the Leishmania species,

In the developing world, young women, pregnant women, and their infants and children frequently experience a cycle where undernutrition (macronutrient and micronutrient) and repeated infection, including parasitic infections, lead to adverse consequences that can continue from one generation to the next. Among parasitic infections, malaria and intestinal helminths coexist widely with micronutrient deficiencies and contribute importantly to anemia and this cycle of retarded growth and development. In somewhat more limited or focal geographic settings, other parasitic diseases (e.g., schistosomi

The first decade of the millennium should mark the beginning of a new era in vaccine development, reaping the rewards of advances in genome characterization, antigen identification, understanding the molecular bases of protective immune responses, and adjuvant design and development. Advances in all of these areas have culminated in vaccine candidates entering clinical testing. These include vaccines against two of humankind's oldest and deadliest diseases, tuberculosis and malaria. Several vaccine candidates for each of these diseases will be tested in humans during the next few years. A cand

CONTEXT: Migration and worldwide travel mean that western clinicians and radiologists more and more face imported tropical diseases. Diseases with unclear signs and symptoms are likely to be investigated with ultrasound. Many tropical diseases have particular ultrasonographic features that are not familiar to the examiner and which may lead to further unnecessary or even harmful diagnostic investigations. In developing countries, ultrasound machines are becoming more widely distributed and are fairly cheap. Portable devices allow field use of ultrasound for population studies and individual di

Both Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum malaria can cause the delivery of low birthweight babies. In this report, we have quantitated haemozoin levels in placentas from women living on the Thai-Burmese border in a region of low transmission for both P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria from June 1995 to January 2000. P. falciparum malaria infections during pregnancy lead to the accumulation of haemozoin (malaria pigment) in the placenta, especially in infections near term and in primigravid pregnancies. Haemozoin concentration was not associated with adverse birth outcomes. Women with P. vivax i

Nitric oxide (NO) is implicated as an integral component of the host armament against invading parasites. Strongest evidence has come from laboratory models of protozoan infections. During malaria, toxoplasmosis and leishmaniasis, to name just a few, the preferential production of pro-inflammatory cytokines predisposes to the increased synthesis of NO, which mediates host protection through either direct parasite killing or by limiting parasite growth. More recently, evidence has been put forward for a beneficial role of NO during helminthic infections. In the case of Schistosomiasis mansoni, …

Steroid resistance is a common condition occurring in children with nephrotic syndrome. Until now, over 50 genes involved in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) pathogenesis have been identified, among which the most prevalent are NPHS1, NPHS2, CD2AP, and PTPRO. The patterns of inheritance of SRNS are autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, or mitochondrial, and tissues of those patients show focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) signs in histopathological image analysis. We present a case of a 6-year-old girl who was admitted to the pediatric nephrology department due to nephroti

More than 200,000 patients with parasitic diseases (predominantly helminthisms, zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis) are annually notified in Uzbekistan. There are imported cases of malaria and sporadic cases of visceral leishmaniasis. The republic eradicated Filaria medinensis infection (dracunculosis) in 1931, town-type cutaneous leishmaniasis in 1950, malaria in 1960, visceral leishmaniasis in 1968, and hookworm diseases in 1974. Much experience has been accumulated in controlling zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, large-scale social helminthisms: ascariasis, taeniarinchiasis, and hymenolepiasi

Hypereosinophilia is often linked to the presence of pluricellular parasites in host tissues. Polynuclear eosinophils are sprung from the bone marrow. After multiplying and maturing, they are thrown into the blood flow and from the blood to the tissues where they are found in immediate contact with the parasite. Eosinophils are major components of the parasitic granuloma. Parasitic diseases are a major cause of hypereosinophilia and eosinophilia is mainly due to helminths. Protozoa do not produce hypereosinophilia, except for toxoplasmosis in which a low and discontinuous eosinophilia may be s…
