Unusual Presentation of Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma as a Cystic Neck Swelling.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a very rare neoplasm that most commonly involves cervical lymph nodes and usually presents as a solid mass. Presentation as a cystic neck mass is very rare. Radiological studies and aspiration cytology are often unreliable, and diagnosis is usually made after thorough clinical and pathological examination along with immunohistochemical analysis. In this article, we report a case of a 42-year-old man who presented with right-sided neck swelling of a 2-month duration. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a cystic lesion in the right side of the neck inferomedial to pa

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland with hepatic metastasis: clinic-radiological case report.

Pleomorphic adenoma originally called the mixed tumour is a neoplasm commonly involving major salivary glands. The spectrum of malignancy in pleomorphic adenoma comprises three distinct entities - Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, carcinosarcoma and benign metastasising pleomorphic adenoma. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma consists of pleomorphic adenoma with a malignant epithelial component. Occasionally, carcinomas ex pleomorphic adenoma develops metastasis. Here we are reporting here a case of benign pleomorphic adenoma arising in parotid gland which turned into malignancy after four years.

Cytomorphological findings and histological correlation of low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma of salivary gland in fine-needle aspiration: a case study.

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCC) of the salivary gland is a rare tumor. We report the cytologic features and histologic correlation of a patient with LGCCC. A 57-year-old man had a hardly palpable, nontender mass in the right cheek area followed over nine months. Radiologic analysis revealed a 1.2 cm multiseptated, cystic, solid nodule in an anterior superficial lobe of the right parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed many irregular overlapping sheets or clusters of ductal epithelial cells forming solid, pseudopapillary, and cribriform architectures. Nuclei of t

Emergency imaging assessment of acute, nontraumatic conditions of the head and neck.

Patients often present to the emergency department with a wide variety of nontraumatic infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic conditions of the head and neck. Because the use of cervical and neck computed tomography (CT) has become routine in the emergency setting, knowledge of the imaging findings of common acute conditions of the head and neck is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis of these potentially life-threatening conditions, which include oral cavity infections, tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess, sialadenitis, parotiditis, diskitis, thrombophlebitis, periorbital and orbital

Late effects of radiotherapy on hearing.

The effect of radiotherapy on hearing was studied in 30 patients who were treated by surgery and radiotherapy for a parotid neoplasm. Functions of the irradiated ear were compared with those of the non-irradiated ear in the same patient. Tympanometry showed a small but significant reduction of static compliance on the irradiated side when compared with the non-irradiated side. Audiometry showed a significant increase in hearing loss in the 1-2, 4-8 and 10-20 kHz ranges that increased with frequency. This hearing loss was mainly sensorineural in contrast to hearing loss at 250-500 Hz, where it

Facial nerve schwannoma of the accessory parotid gland region in a child managed through a transoral approach.

Facial nerve schwannomas arising in the accessory parotid gland region are extremely rare, and paediatric cases have not been reported previously. We present the case of a girl in middle childhood who developed a painless, gradually enlarging mass in the mid-cheek area. Radiologic evaluation revealed a well-defined lesion with imaging features suggestive of a benign neoplasm. A transoral surgical approach was chosen to avoid cutaneous scarring and minimise surgical morbidity. Complete excision was achieved without injury to the facial nerve or Stensen's duct, and histopathology revealed a beni

Rare case of giant myoepithelioma in minor salivary glands of palate in a 9-year-old child.

Myoepitheliomas (MEs) are extremely rare benign neoplasms composed of ectodermally derived contractile smooth muscle cells (myoepithelial cells). Various tissues such as the salivary glands, breast, larynx, and sweat glands show the presence of these myoepithelial cells. They occur, principally, in the parotid gland and infrequently in minor salivary glands. The term "Myoepitheliomas" was first coined by Sheldon in 1943. It is an uncommon salivary gland tumor which accounts for < 1% of all major and minor salivary gland tumors. Batasakis considers the ME to be "one-sided" variant at the opposi

Salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma.

Salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) or malignant myoepithelioma is a rare entity. MC usually presents as a slow-growing painless mass arising in the parotid gland, but may involve other salivary glands. This tumour may be particularly locally aggressive, but its clinical and biological features are not yet fully understood. MC may arise from pre-existing benign lesions, such as pleomorphic adenomas or benign myoepitheliomas, or may arise de novo. It usually affects patients over 50 years old, with no gender preference. Because it is often asymptomatic, the presentation and diagnosis ca

Stromal reaction and prognosis in acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland.

INTRODUCTION: Primary acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland (SG), which usually presents as slow growing tumor. CASE REPORT: We reported a 69-year-old woman with tumor in the right parotid gland with a 5-year progress. Biopsy sections revealed a hybrid form of ACC with a low- and high-grade component and prominent lymphoid tissue in tumor stroma. Immunohistochemistry was performed to define the molecular profile of this unusual ACC, with special interest for stromal influence on to the proliferative activity of ACC with dedifferentiation. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma of the salivary gland.

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCC) is a rare tumor, defined in the 2005 WHO classification as a primary salivary duct tumor. Previously, the neoplasm had been recognized as a variant of salivary duct carcinomas. A 56-year-old Japanese woman noticed a mass in the left subaural region. On radiological examinations, a multicystic tumor was seen in the left parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed. The smears revealed several characteristic cytologic features. The tumor cells were arranged in irregular overlapping and showed inconspicuous nuclear atypia with variable

Salivary gland pleomorphic adenoma.

We discuss the optimal treatment and outcomes for pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary glands by reviewing the pertinent literature. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm. It is found mostly in the parotid gland in middle-aged women. It progresses slowly and, left untreated, can produce significant morbidity and, rarely, death. The optimal treatment is superficial or total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation, which results in local control rates of 95% or higher. Radiotherapy (RT) is useful to obtain local control in patients with positive margins, unres

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis of the buccal mucosa.

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare lesion of salivary glands with a striking resemblance to fibrocystic disease of the breast. Most of the 47 reported cases have occurred within the parotid gland, with only a single case being described within the buccal mucosa. We report an additional case of SPA of the buccal mucosa. The exact nature of this entity is unknown, but has up until recently believed to be a pseudoneoplastic reactive and inflammatory sclerosing process. Even though SPA has satisfied the criteria for monoclonality, the debate as to whether SPA represents a true neoplasm

Epithelial myoepitheial carcinoma of minor salivary gland--low grade malignant tumor presenting with nodal metastasis.

Epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare low grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but can also arise in minor salivary glands. We report a case of primary epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma of minor salivary gland in a 25 year old women who presented with swelling left cheek of one year duration and bilateral submandibular lymphadenopathy. A mass causing erosion of mandible, thyroid cartilage and masseter muscle was identified on CT scan. This was excised and histological examination revealed a mixture of ductal structures consisting

Salivary duct carcinoma in the mandible: a case report.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a distinctive and aggressive neoplasm. The most frequent site of origin is the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland. SDC originating in the minor salivary glands, particularly in the ectopic glands within the mandible, is extremely rare. We describe a 62-year-old man with SDC in the mandible, who presented with a painless lump in the right submandibular region (later identified as lymph node metastasis) and ipsilateral mental nerve palsy. Histologic examination after ablative surgery revealed SDC originating in the mandible and cervical nodal meta

Gastric adenocarcinoma with tonsil and submaxillary gland metastases: case report.

Local invasion, hematogenous and lymphatic metastases are the major modes of spreading gastric cancer. The most common sites of metastases in patients with gastric cancer are liver, peritoneum, omentum, lungs and mesentery. Of the two pathological types of gastric cancer, intestinal-type gastric cancer showed preferential metastasis to the liver, whereas the diffuse-type showed a preference for peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis. However, metastases of gastric cancer to the head and neck regions are not common. The hematogenous route appears to account for a great majority of met

Parapharyngeal growth of parotid tumors: report of two cases.

Two patients with parapharyngeal pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland, one malignant and one benign lesion, were successfully treated operatively. Deep lobe parotid tumors may occasionally grow along the stylomandibular tunnel into the parapharyngeal region. Since the opening of the tunnel is narrower and less distensible than the parapharyngeal region, the tumor assumes a dumbbell shape. The patients have an intraoral mass or asymmetry of the palate, with difficulties in swallowing or phonation. The diagnosis is suspected on bimanual examination, and puncture biopsies should be done to e

Sclerosing Polycystic "Adenosis" of Salivary Glands: A Neoplasm Characterized by PI3K Pathway Alterations More Correctly Named Sclerosing Polycystic Adenoma.

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare benign salivary gland lesion that usually arises from the parotid gland. SPA was originally interpreted to be a non-neoplastic alteration analogous to fibrocystic changes of the breast, but now there is uncertainty about whether it may represent a neoplasm. SPA often contains intraductal proliferations with an appearance similar to ductal neoplasia of the breast, and one study reported X-chromosome inactivation using polymorphisms of the human androgen receptor (Skalova et al., in AJSP 30:939-944, 2006). We investigated the genetics of SPA through
