Proximity of Maternal Time of Immigration to Child's Birth Is Associated With Autism Spectrum Disorder With Early Learning Delay Among Immigrant Populations in the United States: Findings From the Study to Explore Early Development.

Our objective was to examine the relationship between the timing of parental US immigration and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without early learning delay (ELD), ASD with ELD, and ELD alone among US-born children. We analyzed data from a multi-site case-control study that recruited children aged 2-5 years with ASD or non-ASD developmental disorders and same-age population controls. Parental demographics were collected from caregivers at study enrollment. Mullen Scales of Early Learning ≤ 70 was used to define ELD. Among children with a non-US-born parent (N = 1048), we used multinomial logist

Pre-reproductive stress in adolescent female rats alters oocyte microRNA expression and offspring phenotypes: pharmacological interventions and putative mechanisms.

Pre-reproductive stress (PRS) to adolescent female rats alters anxiogenic behavior in first (F1)- and second-generation (F2) offspring and increases mRNA expression of corticotropin-releasing factor receptor type 1 (Crhr1) in oocytes and in neonate offspring brain. Here, we ask whether the expression of Crhr1 and Crhr1-targeting microRNA is altered in brain, blood, and oocytes of exposed females and in the brain of their neonate and adult F1 and F2 offspring. In addition, we inquire whether maternal post-stress drug treatment reverses PRS-induced abnormalities in offspring. We find that PRS in

A narrative review of the history and evidence-base for the timing of orchidopexy for cryptorchidism.

INTRODUCTION: Consensus recommendations for surgical management of cryptorchidism recommend orchidopexy between 6 and 18 months of age. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted elective surgical scheduling. OBJECTIVE: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we sought to review the available data regarding the natural history, surgical management, and infertility- and cancer-related risks associated with cryptorchid testes. The purpose of this review is to provide parents, referring providers, and surgeons with information to inform their decisions to proceed with or delay orchidopexy. METHODS: A ret

Screening for the mitochondrial A1555G mutation among Egyptian patients with non-syndromic, sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Hearing loss is the most frequent form of neurosensory deficit in humans. Although the majority of hereditary hearing loss is due to nuclear gene mutations, it has become clear the significant contribution of mitochondrial genes. The first mitochondrial mutation shown to cause non-syndromic hearing loss in humans was the A1555G mutation in the small ribosomal RNA gene (12S rRNA). It has been detected in hundreds of families of different ethnic backgrounds, making it one of the prevalent genetic causes of hearing loss currently identified. However, there are major differences

Prenatal alcohol exposure and childhood behavior at age 6 to 7 years: I. dose-response effect.

OBJECTIVE: Moderate to heavy levels of prenatal alcohol exposure have been associated with alterations in child behavior, but limited data are available on adverse effects after low levels of exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the dose-response effect of prenatal alcohol exposure for adverse child behavior outcomes at 6 to 7 years of age. METHODS: Beginning in 1986, women attending the urban university-based maternity clinic were routinely screened at their first prenatal visit for alcohol and drug use by trained research assistants from the Fetal Alcohol Research Center. Exploring parental prenatal influences on child health: A multicohort study and data visualisation tool.

BACKGROUND: The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis suggests that early life environmental exposures, especially during pregnancy, can impact long-term health. Research has largely relied on correlational evidence and has focussed on maternal factors, with less attention given to paternal, postnatal, and broader social determinants. This focus could complicate efforts to determine the most effective strategies for improving population health. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using harmonised data across four population-based longitudinal cohort studies from the UK and Norway (

Assessment of Cesarean Delivery and Neurodevelopmental and Psychiatric Disorders in the Children of a Population-Based Swedish Birth Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Recent studies suggest that cesarean delivery (CD) is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children, although they were unable to control for indications for CD or familial confounding beyond full siblings. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between CD and neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Swedish register-based cohort study included 1 179 341 term-birth singletons born between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 2003, and followed up through December 31, 2013. Individual, family, and social risk factors for child-to-parent violence in non-emancipated young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Child-to-parent violence (CPV) has been generally investigated during adolescence, whereas less attention has been paid to young adults who continue to live with their parents. Grounded in an ecological framework, this study aimed to examine how individual, familial, and social risk factors jointly relate to CPV toward mothers and fathers in a non-clinical sample of non-emancipated young adults, thereby extending existing evidence to a developmentally and culturally relevant population. METHODS: Participants were 1,064 Italian young adults aged 18-25 years who had lived regularly w

Improvement of Premium Oil Soybean Variety Heinong 551 with Integrating Conventional Hybridization and Gamma Radiation.

Meeting the growing demand for vegetable oil while promoting agricultural sustainability in Northeast China requires developing high-yield, high-oil-content soybean varieties. We present the comprehensive development and evaluation of Heinong 551, an innovative soybean variety created through an integrated approach of conventional breeding methods and radiation-induced mutation techniques. The breeding program began with hybridization between Heinong 44 (the maternal parent) and Hefeng 47 (the paternal parent), followed by targeted exposure to 60Co gamma radiation at 130 Gy to induce beneficia

Associations of preterm birth and neonatal stress exposure with chronic pain in adulthood - Results from the Gutenberg prematurity study.

Although the effect of early childhood stress on central nervous pain processing is well known, studies on the association of prematurity and chronic pain are scarce. This study used data from a single-centre retrospective cohort study followed by a prospective clinical examination and pain assessment. The study was based on data from the local birth registry. Newborns born between 1969 and 2002 who had reached adulthood were eligible .. Using a selection algorithm, a study cohort stratified by gestational age (GA) was recruited. Chronic pain conditions were assessed using questionnaire and st

Lifestyle causes of male infertility.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the potential effects of lifestyle factors on male reproductive health. Evidence of a global decline in human sperm quality over recent decades has been accumulating. Environmental, occupational, and modifiable lifestyle factors may contribute to this decline. This review focuses on key lifestyle factors that are associated with male infertility such as smoking cigarettes, alcohol intake, use of illicit drugs, obesity, psychological stress, advanced paternal age, dietary practices, and coffee consumption. Other factors such as testicular heat stress, intense cycling train

Identifying At-Risk Individuals for Insomnia Using the Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A primary focus of the National Institute of Mental Health's current strategic plan is "predicting" who is at risk for disease. As such, the current investigation examined the utility of premorbid sleep reactivity in identifying a specific and manageable population at elevated risk for future insomnia. METHODS: A community-based sample of adults (n = 2,892; 59.3% female; 47.9 ± 13.3 y old) with no lifetime history of insomnia or depression completed web-based surveys across three annual assessments. Participants reported parental history of insomnia, demographic characterist

Modifiable risk factors for schizophrenia and autism--shared risk factors impacting on brain development.

Schizophrenia and autism are two poorly understood clinical syndromes that differ in age of onset and clinical profile. However, recent genetic and epidemiological research suggests that these two neurodevelopmental disorders share certain risk factors. The aims of this review are to describe modifiable risk factors that have been identified in both disorders, and, where available, collate salient systematic reviews and meta-analyses that have examined shared risk factors. Based on searches of Medline, Embase and PsycINFO, inspection of review articles and expert opinion, we first compiled a s

The risk for four specific congenital heart defects associated with assisted reproductive techniques: a population-based evaluation.

STUDY QUESTION: Are the risks of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, transposition of great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and coarctation of the aorta increased in infants conceived by different assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs)? STUDY ANSWER: ARTs, and particularly intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), are specifically associated with a higher risk of TOF. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN: ARTs are associated with an increase in the overall risk of birth defects. The risk for congenital heart defects (CHDs) associated with ARTs has been evaluated as a whole but there is limited information

Investigating environmental links between parent depression and child depressive/anxiety symptoms using an assisted conception design.

OBJECTIVE: Links between maternal and offspring depression symptoms could arise from inherited factors, direct environmental exposure, or shared adversity. A novel genetically sensitive design was used to test the extent of environmental links between maternal depression symptoms and child depression/anxiety symptoms, accounting for inherited effects, shared adversity, and child age and gender. METHOD: Eight hundred fifty-two families with a child born by assisted conception provided questionnaire data. Mothers and fathers were genetically related or unrelated to the child depending on concep
