School participation in autistic girls and boys: The role of social-communication abilities and extrinsic barriers.

This study aimed to offer a depiction and comprehensive understanding of school participation in autistic youth, which has received limited exploration. Parents of 871 autistic youth aged 7 or 15 were invited to participate in a study, among whom 600 agreed, allowing data collection on diagnosis, comorbidities, school, professional support, and parental characteristics. They were asked to fill in questionnaires assessing executive functions, social-communication difficulties, and school participation, completed by 241. Structural equation modeling and descriptive methods were employed to exami

Symbolic access: medical students' awareness of institutional culture and its influence on learning, a phenomenographic study.

BACKGROUND: The discussion of access in medical education has its focus largely on physical and epistemological access, leaving a qualitative gap regarding sociocultural factors which enable access in this context. This study introduces and defines symbolic access, a concept with a specific lens on sociocultural inclusion, and the influence it has on student learning within the South African medical education landscape. METHODS: A phenomenographic design was used to explore students' conceptions of symbolic access and its impact on learning. One-on-one exploratory interviews were conducted wi

Immigrant women's experiences of postpartum depression in Canada: a protocol for systematic review using a narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Literature documents that immigrant women in Canada have a higher prevalence of postpartum depression symptomatology than Canadian-born women. There exists a need to synthesize information on the contextual factors and social determinants of health that influence immigrant women's reception of and behavior in accessing existing mental health services. Our research question is: what are the ethnoculturally defined patterns of help-seeking behaviors and decision-making and other predictive factors for therapeutic mental health care access and outcomes with respect to postpartum depre

An umbrella review of barriers, facilitators, and interventions for children and youth with disabilities.

Children and youth with disabilities have fewer opportunities for structured and unstructured active play than their peers without disabilities. This umbrella review explored how active play is defined and perceived among children and youth with disabilities and their adult facilitators, and identified barriers, facilitators, and interventions influencing active play among children and youth with disabilities. A total of 18 review articles were deemed eligible and synthesized guided by the Social Ecological Model (SEM). Among children and youth with disabilities, active play was defined as fun

Improving the Perioperative Outpatient Patient Experience: How Pre-op and PACU Made a Difference.

PURPOSE: Beginning in 2025, Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (OAS CAHPS), became mandatory reporting for outpatient services. Facilities accepting Medicare and Medicaid payments, stand to lose 2% of reimbursement if they fail to report OAS CAHPS scores. January 2025, our community hospital OAS CAHPS score for the benchmark question "Likelihood to Recommend" was 93.7%, with a peer group rank of 13. This was near bottom-decile performance and considered below expectations. DESIGN: Process improvement. METHODS: A four-pillar patient exper

Responses of the Neurobiological Craving Signature to Smoking Versus Alternative Social Rewards Predict Craving and Monthly Smoking in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable mortality worldwide. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the development of tobacco addiction due to ongoing brain maturation and susceptibility to social influences, such as exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Craving-the strong desire to use drugs-already emerges with nondaily tobacco smoking and predicts continued use and relapse. However, the roles of craving and ETS exposure during the early stages of tobacco use in adolescence remain poorly understood. METHODS: In this preregistered study, we harnessed a rece

Does the quality of the relationship to parents and peers predict mental health service use during adolescence? A prospective community study.

Adolescents frequently seek emotional support from parents and peers when experiencing psychological distress. The quality of these relationships may therefore influence their help-seeking behavior and access to professional care, but it is yet unknown whether the quality of the relationship to parents and peers prospectively predict adolescent mental health service use. Guided by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, the present study examined whether perceived relationship quality-specifically closeness and conflict with mother, father, and best friend-prospectively predicted use of sp

A Longitudinal Exploratory Case-Series Comparing Morphological Trajectories in Four Early-Implanted Greek-Cypriot Children and Eight Typically Hearing Peers.

Objectives: This paper explores whether deaf Greek-Cypriot (GC) children with cochlear implants (CIs) begin using the various forms of the definite article (DA) of the Greek language similarly to their typically hearing peers in terms of order of appearance and age. Furthermore, it explores if their MLUm growth correlates with that of typically developing peers. Methods: This is a longitudinal study with quantitative and qualitative analyses. The sample comprises four prelingually deaf GC children with CIs and eight typically hearing (TH) children with no developmental delays. Age and hearing

Prevalence, comorbidity, and demographic patterns of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder in Chinese children and adolescents: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of major disruptive behavior disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) has not been fully described in Chinese youth, and their respective patterns are also understudied. This systematic review was conducted to explore prevalence rates, comorbidity, and demographic characteristics of ODD and CD in Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS: A thorough search of international databases revealed 19 peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2016 and 2025 that were pertinent and met the eligibility standards. The findings

Online peer support program for women with metastatic cancer: a pre-post evaluation.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of metastatic cancer entails an enormous psychological, physical, and social burden, whereby affected women do not feel adequately supported. To address this issue, the Women's Self-Help Organization Cancer (Frauenselbsthilfe Krebs e.V. FSH) has implemented an innovative peer support program based on online group meetings moderated by trained peers to positively influence psychosocial distress and quality of life of affected women. This pre-post non-randomized study aims to systematically evaluate this program. METHODS: Participants were asked to evaluate the program in

Alcohol use in Iraq: Perceptions of interviewed students at three Iraqi universities.

INTRODUCTION: Iraq has faced decades of conflict and increased exposure to alcohol use. While the majority (60%) of Iraq's population is under the age of 24, there is no research examining their views on alcohol use and related factors. This study explores how the individual, interpersonal and social contexts of university students may influence their experiences and perceptions of alcohol use. METHODS: We undertook a qualitative study underpinned by a socio-ecological framework and the alcohol use motivational model. Forty students from 11 disciplines at three universities across Iraq were i

Forensic Psychiatric Evaluations of Juvenile Sexual Offenses and Criminal Responsibility Assessments.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent sexual offending is a complex and multifaceted issue; however, existing research is predominantly derived from Western contexts, leading to gaps in understanding these behaviors in underrepresented regions. Criminal characteristics, psychiatric diagnoses, and cognitive factors, which are recognized to affect offending trajectories and reporting patterns, may differ in these underexplored contexts. METHODS: The objective of the research is to categorize male adolescents with a history of perpetration of sexual offenses based on the age of their victims (peer/adult vs.

Cross-cultural conceptions of third-party intervention across childhood.

Third-party intervention is a cornerstone of cooperative societies, yet we know little about how children develop an understanding of this social behavior. The present work generates a cross-cultural and developmental picture of how 6-, 9-, and 12-year-olds (N = 447) across four societies (India, Germany, Uganda, and the United States) reason about third-party intervention. To do so, we measured children's obligation judgments and unstructured descriptions of third-party intervention. Although some cultural differences emerged, 6-year-olds largely considered bystanders as obligated to respond

Friendship matters-An interview study with adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition diagnosed in 5% of children and adolescents. This neurodevelopmental condition causes impaired academic, social, and occupational functioning. Adolescents with ADHD symptoms have lower health-related quality of life and children with ADHD have been described as having difficulties forming positive friendships. Therefore, the aim was to describe how 15-17-year-old adolescents with ADHD experience friendship with peers. A semi-structured interview study was conducted with twelve adolescents about their experiences of friendships. The

Sexual minority status and food and alcohol disturbance among college students: The moderating role of body esteem.

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; restricting caloric intake before, during, or after drinking to either offset calories or to increase intoxication) is common among college students and poses a threat to students' health. In conjunction, sexual minority (SM; i.e., not exclusively heterosexual) college students may be at increased risk of engaging in alcohol misuse and disordered eating compared to their heterosexual peers due to exposure to minority stress. However, little research has examined whether engagement in FAD differs by SM status. Body esteem (BE) is an important resilience factor

Pubertal timing and adolescent outcomes: investigating explanations for associations with a genetically informed design.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathology and risky behaviors increase during adolescence, and understanding which adolescents are most at risk informs prevention and intervention efforts. Pubertal timing relative to same-sex, same-age peers is a known correlate of adolescent outcomes among both boys and girls. However, it remains unclear whether this relation is better explained by a plausible causal process or unobserved familial liability. METHODS: We extended previous research by examining associations between pubertal timing in early adolescence (age 14) and outcomes in later adolescence (age 17) in a
