The use of tissue adhesives as an alternative to or replacement for sutures in wound closure has long been an area of interest. One of these tissue adhesives is a cyanoacrylate. In 15 patients, who underwent root resections of the upper incisors on both sides, the incision lines were closed with silk sutures on one side and by n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate on the other side of the frenum. Clinical comparison was made on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st postoperative days. On the seventh postoperative day following the removal of sutures and the coating, small punch biopsies were obtained from n

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this histologic study was to examine underlying cellular responses to corticotomy- and osteotomy-assisted tooth movements.
METHODS: Thirty-six rats were divided into 5 groups: corticotomy-assisted tooth movement (CO + TM), sham corticotomy without tooth movement (CO alone), osteotomy-assisted tooth movement (OS + TM), sham osteotomy without tooth movement (OS alone), and unassisted tooth movement (TM alone). Standard orthodontic springs were activated to produce mesial tooth movement. The rats were killed at 3, 21, and 60 days after activation for osteoclast and b

BACKGROUND: The use of the operating microscope (OM) for extraction and alveolar ridge augmentation (ARP) is increasing due to enhanced magnification and illumination. The primary objective was to compare the wound healing and crestal bone quality after the use of OM and dental loupes (DL) for ARP.
METHODS: Forty non-molar teeth with periapical lesions in need of extraction and ARP from 33 patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: DL (control) or OM (test). All procedures were performed by 1 surgeon and assessments done by masked examiners. ARP was performed with an allograft and a resorba

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have revealed a link between dental infection and preterm birth or low birth weight (PTB/LBW), however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Progress in understanding the associated mechanisms has been limited in part by lack of an animal model for chronic infection-induced PTB/LBW, mimicking pregnancy under conditions of periodontitis. We aimed to establish a mouse model of chronic periodontitis in order to investigate the link between periodontitis and PTB/LBW.
METHODS: To establish chronic inflammation beginning with dental infection, we surgically

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are cornerstones in the management of oral inflammatory pathologies. However, their precise causal effects on a range of oral diseases and the underlying genetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Concurrently, emerging evidence on the gut-brain axis suggests a potential connection between intestinal inflammation and the pathogenesis of oral diseases. Although preliminary data point to the gut microbiota's role in disease progression, the specific causal pathways and genetic underpinnings remain largely unexplored.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis (AP) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are chronic conditions triggered by an inflammatory process and sharing similar pathogeneses and molecular players. Previous studies have suggested that AP may perpetuate a systemic inflammation state and, in turn, contribute to CVD. In this study, we investigated the potential association between endodontic pathology and CVD using epidemiological and genetic approaches.
METHODS: Epidemiologic analysis was performed by querying the medical and dental records of >2 million patients. We retrieved information on positive/

The aim of this study was to test whether the Third Molar Eruption Predictor, developed for panoramic radiographs, can also be applied to periapical radiographs. The Third Molar Eruption Predictor is a transparent device (US patent 5,816,814), not commercially available, and developed for prediction of future eruption or impaction of third molars. The material consisted of periapical radiographs of mandibular third molars taken from the lateral projection without angulation of the central beam. The radiographs taken at the mean age of 20.6 years (SD +/- 1.4 years) were retrospectively availabl

In order to minimize the incidence of local and/or systemic side effects, the biocompatibility of all endodontic materials should be investigated by various in vitro and in vivo tests prior to clinical application. The battery of in vitro tests includes determinations of mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial effects. Several reports have shown that paraformaldehyde-containing ZnO-eugenol cements in particular, such as Endomethasone and N2, are antibacterial. On the other hand, it has been found that endodontic materials with strong antimicrobial activity are frequently mutagenic, i.e.,

BACKGROUND: Severe periodontitis often results in extensive attachment loss and non-contained bony defects, compromising regenerative predictability. This case series evaluates the clinical and radiographic outcomes of treating extensive infrabony defects with buccal dehiscence using a synergistic approach: the connective tissue graft (CTG) wall technique combined with freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) and concentrated growth factors (CGF).
METHODS: Two patients underwent regenerative surgery following initial periodontal therapy. Intraoperatively, two-wall, non-contained defects with comple

The immediate placement of implants in the fresh extraction sockets of infected teeth with periradicular and periapical lesions is contraindicated because of both the infection and the loss of architecture required for proper implant placement. There are 4 approaches for implant replacement of a hopeless tooth with lesions: (1) extraction and delayed implant placement; (2) extraction, debridement, guided bone regeneration (GBR), guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and delayed implant placement; (3) extraction, intrasocket debridement, and immediate implant placement; or (4) extraction, debrideme

In Iraq, oral and maxillofacial (OMF) infections are common; these infections may be of odontogenic or nonodontogenic origin. The former, the commoner, gains importance from the catastrophic consequences that may take place in neglected or mismanaged patients and, as a paradox, from a fact that most of these infections are avoidable and preventable if a timely and accurate management took place for the primary dental problem. Nonodontogenic infections are not uncommon and are of life-threatening potential. Most of these infections are associated with an underlying medical condition that, whene

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare two protocols to examine bacterial colonization in teeth associated with chronic apical periodontitis with acute episodes (ap), using light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
METHODOLOGY: Nine root samples (seven teeth) were processed using either Eastman Dental Institute (EDI) (n = 4 teeth/4 roots) or Zurich (n = 3 teeth/5 roots) protocols. The roots were sectioned longitudinally; one root portion was viewed with SEM, descriptively dividing its length into apical, middle and coronal; semi-t

Placement of immediate implants is a routine clinical procedure. However, certain clinical conditions, especially the presence of infected sites, are considered to be contraindications for the immediate implant. Based on clinical experience, it is proposed that if certain preoperative and postoperative steps are carefully followed and meticulous debridement of the alveolus is done during the surgical procedure, immediate implants can be successfully placed into chronically infected sites. The advantages of this procedure are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of single- versus 2-visit root canal treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis after a 2-year follow-up period.
METHODS: Three hundred maxillary and mandibular nonvital teeth with apical periodontitis were treated in either a single visit or 2 visits. The main inclusion criteria were radiographic evidence of apical periodontitis (minimum size ≥ 2.0 × 2.0 mm) and a diagnosis of pulpal necrosis confirmed by a negative response to hot and cold tests. Radiographically, all teeth showed small and irregular periapical radiolucencies

INTRODUCTION: Outcome predictors for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth mainly include cavity wall integrity and the presence of a 1.5-2 mm ferrule. However, in some clinical situations, the aforementioned predictors cannot be achieved. Three different techniques have been proposed to obtain an adequate ferrule respecting the supracrestal tissue attachment: surgical crown lengthening, orthodontic forced eruption, and surgical extrusion. There are little published prospective data evaluating periodontal changes after surgical extrusion. Therefore, the aims of this study were to rep

INTRODUCTION: This cohort study is the second phase of a previously reported trial. The primary aim was to assess the outcome of the treatment of teeth with open apices managed by the orthograde placement of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apical plugs. The secondary goal was to identify potential outcome factors for this kind of treatment with a larger sample size and longer follow-up periods than in the first phase of the project.
METHODS: Two hundred twenty-one patients who had been treated between 2000 and 2010 were contacted for follow-up examination 12-128 months after treatment (media

Background and aim Postoperative pain following root canal treatment (RCT) can be influenced by the obturation technique, as variations in apical sealing and material extrusion may affect periapical tissue response. The aim of this study was to evaluate postoperative pain and apical outcomes following three different obturation techniques in patients diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, with or without apical periodontitis. Methods Seventy-five single-rooted teeth requiring RCT were randomly allocated into three groups based on the obturation technique used: cold lateral condensat
