In this research, the structural modifications with ageing of clinically healthy periodontal tissues were analyzed by means of polarization microscopy and morphometrical methods for light microscopy. The new findings may be summarized as follows. The periodontal ligament was found to be widened in the cervical and apical regions. The thickening of cementum with ageing was shown to be accompanied by a modification in the shape of Sharpey's fibres, which in the elderlies were wavy instead of straight as in the control. Intravenous and oral diazepam were evaluated as to their effectiveness in conscious sedation during two similar surgical episodes. Ten patients, six females and four males, from 30 to 60 years of age were included in the study. The role of crowded teeth in the etiology of attachment loss was studied in thirty teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons from eight children 12 to 13 years of age. Following extraction, the teeth were stained in a 1 percent solution of water blue and examined under the stereomicroscope.
