A Case of Refractory Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis Caused by Streptococcus gordonii.

An 82-year-old woman undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) presented to our hospital with cloudy PD effluent since four days. The leukocyte count in the effluent was elevated to 2900/μL, and the patient was diagnosed with PD-related peritonitis. Treatment with cefazolin and ceftazidime was initiated; however, the leukocyte count in the effluent did not improve. Culture of the effluent revealed the presence of Streptococcus gordonii. Treatment was switched to ampicillin monotherapy; however, when the leukocyte count in the effluent still did not normalize, the PD catheter was removed for manageme…

Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis Caused by Staphylococcus caprae: A Case Report.

Herein, we report a case of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis caused by Staphylococcus caprae (S. caprae). An 88-year-old man who had been receiving PD presented with cloudy effluent and an elevated dialysate white blood cell (WBC) count of 800/μL. He was diagnosed with PD-related peritonitis and treated with intraperitoneal cefazolin and ceftazidime, which promptly cleared the effluent by day 3 and reduced the WBC count in the dialysate to 0/μL by day 5. Culturing of the effluent identified S. caprae (methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus), so the antibiotic regim…

Teaching peritoneal dialysis: A position paper for the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis.

Given the central importance of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) nurse in successfully training and supporting a patient with PD at home, as well as preventing complications as a result of the therapy, the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) has provided guidance on the principles for training in two previous publications. Despite the lack of high certainty evidence in teaching PD, this ISPD 2025 Position Paper builds upon the two prior works to provide contemporary approaches to training a patient/care partner for PD to be performed at home, based upon an evolution in healthcare

Research progress on histone deacetylases in peritoneal dialysis-associated peritoneal fibrosis.

When chronic kidney disease (CKD) progresses to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) can serve as an effective alternative therapy, but it also has its limitations. Peritoneal fibrosis (PF), a PD-related complication, is one of the major and serious complications of long-term PD that can lead to ultrafiltration failure, severely impacting the efficacy of PD treatment. At present, most of the research on the molecular mechanisms of fibrosis focuses on the liver and kidney, but there is relatively little research on PF for identifying anti-fibrotic targets. Histone deacetylas

The INDEPSO-ISPSM Consensus on Peritoneal Malignancies-Diagnosis and Management of Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

We systematically reviewed published economic evaluations of systemic antifungal therapies and assessed their strengths and weaknesses. The study identified all economic evaluations published before May 2002 and critically appraised their methods using a published checklist. Over 1000 papers on antifungal treatments and costs were retrieved, 40 of which were economic evaluations. Fifteen of these were evaluations of systemic antifungal therapy. The majority of studies examined prophylaxis (11 out of 15), two examined empiric treatment and two examined the treatment of confirmed infections. Met

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Coxiella Burnetii: A case report.

RATIONALE: Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis (PDAP) is the leading cause of PD failure and discontinuation of PD. Several zoonotic pathogens could lead to the development of PDAP. Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) was a zoonotic pathogen and the cause of Q fever. However, reports of PDAP caused by C. burnetii are rare. We herein report the first case of PDAP caused by C. burnetii in mainland China. PATIENTS CONCERNS: A 45-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with chief complaint of yellow and cloudy PD effluent for 2 days. She had undergone PD for 5 years due to end-stage r…

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis due to Nocardia farcinica: A case report.

Nocardia spp. are Gram-positive aerobic actinomycetes that are widely found in everyday environments, such as soil, vegetables, and water. They are known to cause infections in the lungs, central nervous system, and skin. However, peritonitis caused by Nocardia spp. is rare. We report a case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Nocardia farcinica in a 53-year-old woman. She had been undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) for approximately two years because of diabetic nephropathy. Gram staining of the PD effluent revealed the presence of Gram-positive rods. Because species-leve…

A Rare Case of Peritoneal Dialysis-Associated Peritonitis Caused by Neisseria sicca.

Peritonitis is a critical complication in peritoneal dialysis, often leading to peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment failure. We present a rare case of Neisseria sicca (NS)-related peritonitis in a 47-year-old male with multiple comorbidities. Despite NS's infrequent association with infections, prompt diagnosis and antibiotic therapy based on International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) guidelines led to a favorable outcome. This case emphasizes identifying uncommon pathogens in immunocompromised individuals and highlights the importance of prompt treatment to prevent morbidity.

Prognostic Factors of Peritonitis in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis: a Retrospective Observational Study.

Background/Objectives. Peritoneal dialysis stands as an established form of renal replacement therapy; yet peritonitis remains a major complication associated with it. This study, analyzing two decades of data from the Nephrology, Dialysis, and Hypertension Division of the University-Hospital IRCCS in Bologna, aimed to identify prognostic factors linked to peritonitis events. It also sought to evaluate the suitability of different peritoneal dialysis techniques, with a focus on Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). Additionally, the study ass…

A rare case of peritoneal tuberculosis mimicking peritoneal carcinomatosis: the ongoing challenge.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infection that can involve any organ system and present in various forms. About one-third of the world's population are carriers of latent TB. Although most cases are from a pulmonary origin, there is a rising prevalence of abdominal TB. Patients with pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB are treated similarly through the use of pharmacological therapy. Nonspecific clinical manifestations of TB have made it difficult for clinicians to diagnose. Peritoneal tuberculosis (PTB) is a serious concern as its symptoms overlap with that of many other chronic conditions, especial
