Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are persistent pollutants of anthropogenic or natural origin in the environment and accumulate in anoxic habitats. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the enzyme naphthalene carboxylase as a model reaction for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon activation by carboxylation. An enzyme assay was established with cell extracts of the highly enriched culture N47. In assays without addition of ATP, naphthalene carboxylase catalyzed a stable isotope exchange of the carboxyl group of naphthoate with 13C-labeled bicarbonate buffer, which can only occur via a pa

Plastics have become pervasive pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, acting not only as contaminants but also as novel substrates for organism colonization. Periphyton communities are highly sensitive to environmental disturbance such as eutrophication and climate warming, which may interact with plastic surfaces to alter ecosystem structure and function. In this study, we examined the combined effects of temperature (ambient, +3 °C, +4.5 °C), nutrient levels (low, high), polymer type, and surface roughness on periphyton development using outdoor mesocosms, running since 2003. Warming and nutrient

Engineered living materials (ELMs) are emerging as a new class of autonomous and self-maintainable systems that integrate metabolically active organisms within structural scaffolds to create materials capable of sensing, self-repair, adaptive response, and long-term functional persistence. Unlike conventional smart materials, which remain externally programmed and limited in regenerative capacity, ELMs leverage the intrinsic capabilities of microorganisms, fungi, algae, and mammalian cells to support continuous environmental interaction and feedback-regulated behavior. These systems retain met

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), classified as a persistent organic pollutant, promotes mitochondrial iron overload through voltage-dependent anion channel 2 (VDAC2). However, the source of iron transported through VDAC2 remains unclear. Here, we reported that PFOS enhanced extracellular iron influx into human hepatocytes HepG2, which peaked at 6 h. Under PFOS exposure, total VDAC2 protein levels remained unchanged, whereas its expression increased in mitochondrial lysates but decreased in cytoplasmic lysates, which were observed both in HepG2 cells and mice liver. Meanwhile, the total protei

War legitimizes the right to kill for its participants, equating victory with moral justification; however, this perceived legitimacy is largely constructed on the deaths of civilians and other living beings. Medicine, by its very nature, is grounded in the principles of preserving life, doing no harm, and adhering to scientific and ethical standards, and is therefore fundamentally opposed to the philosophy of war. Wars lead, directly and indirectly, to deaths, disability, displacement, poverty, and long-term public health disasters. Attacks on health facilities, restrictions on access to food

Bisphenol A (BPA), as a typical endocrine-disrupting chemical, can mimic estrogenic activity and destroy endocrine homeostasis, thus posing severe threats to human health. Meanwhile, its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation highlight the urgent demand for highly sensitive, rapid, and reliable detection techniques toward trace BPA in complicated matrices. Electrochemical sensing is highly attractive for BPA detection owing to its fast response, portability, and easy operation. However, conventional electrochemical strategies still suffer from insufficient sensitivity, poor selectivity,

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental pollutants known for their widespread distribution and bioaccumulation. Recent studies indicate that PFAS exposure may adversely affect human urinary system health. Despite the growing body of research, a systematic understanding of their toxic mechanisms remains limited. This review evaluates the current evidence linking PFAS exposure to urinary disorders, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. It also highlights potential mechanisms behind PFAS toxicity, such as oxidative

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly recognised as ubiquitous environmental pollutants, and evidence continues to mount that humans are exposed to NPs primarily through food and drinking water. Whilst their presence in biological systems is well documented, their role in metabolic dysfunction remains unclear. Metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are characterised by chronic inflammation, impaired energy metabolism and endocrine disruption; under these conditions, the metabolic system itself is subjected to a state of persistent stress. Plastic pollution presents escalating threats to coastal ecosystems, with limited insights available from Southeast India. This study investigated vertical and horizontal stratification of macroplastics (>25 mm), mesoplastics (5-25 mm), and microplastics (<5 mm) in sediments of Rameswaram, Tuticorin, and Pichavaram. Stratified cores (15, 50, 75 cm) were analyzed for plastic morphology, polymer composition (FTIR), surface degradation (SEM-EDX), granulometry, and organic matter. Rameswaram exhibited the highest loads (up to 2800 ± 125 particles/kg dry sediment), driven by coarse, permeable sedim

Transformation products (TPs) of pesticides have gained substantial attention due to their potential greater persistence and ecological risks than parent compounds. Nevertheless, given to the variety of pesticides and complex of TPs, the effective identification of unknown TPs presents a considerable challenge. Herein, we employed a target quantitative approach to quantify twelve insecticides, twenty-three fungicides, nine herbicides and nine commercialized TPs in soils from Dongting Lake Basin, with total concentrations ranged from 4.39 to 3012 ng/g dw (median range: n.d.- 5.98 ng/g dw). Fluoroquinolones (FQs), a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics widely used to treat human and animal diseases globally, have limited adsorption and are often excreted unchanged or as metabolites. These compounds enter the soil environment through feces, urban wastewater, or discharge of biological solids. The fluorine atoms in FQs impart high electronegativity, chemical stability, and resistance to microbial degradation, allowing them to potentially enter food chains. The persistence of FQs in soils raises questions about their impacts on plant growth, an aspect not yet conclusively determined.

Although PFOS has been banned as a persistent organic pollutant, it still exists in large quantities within the environment, thus impacting the health of aquatic ecosystems. Previous studies focused solely on high PFOS concentrations, disregarding the connection with environmental factors. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the PFOS effects on aquatic ecosystems amidst changing environmental conditions, this study investigated the cellular responses of Microcystis aeruginosa to varying PFOS concentrations under heatwave and nutrient stress conditions. The results showed that PFOS co

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a widely detected replacement for legacy long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment and human blood samples. Its potential toxicity led to its recent classification as a globally regulated persistent organic pollutant. Although animal studies have shown a positive association between PFHxS levels and hepatic steatosis and hepatocellular hypertrophy, the link with liver toxicity, including end-stage liver cancer, remains inconclusive. In this study, we examined the effects of PFHxS on the proliferation of Hep3B (human hepatocellular carci

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant, which is very difficult to remove by common methods. In this study, the GO-load nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI/GO) was fabricated and optimized to improve the reaction rate and removal efficiency for TBBPA reliably and efficiently. The results showed that GO-load significantly reduced the self-aggregation of NZVI and the aggregate size decreased by 50.00% (1400-700 nm). Meanwhile, GO significantly improved the reaction rate kobs (1.11 ± 0.11 h-1) of TBBPA in the NZVI/GO system compared to the NZVI (0.40 ± 0.08 h-1) sy

Chloroquine (CQ) has been widely used for many years against malaria and various viral diseases. Its important use and high potential to being persistent make it of particular concern for ecotoxicological studies. Here, we evaluated the toxicity of CQ alone and in combination with copper (Cu) to the euryhaline rotifer Proales similis. All experiments were carried out using chronic toxicity reproductive five-day tests and an application factor (AF) of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 by multiplying the 24-h LC50 values of CQ (4250 µg/L) and Cu (68 µg/L), which were administered in solution. Global water security is jeopardized by the presence of anthropogenic contaminants, which can persist resiliently in the environment and adversely affect human health. Surface adsorption of polluting species is an effective technique for water purification. In this work, redox-active magnetic compounds were designed for the targeted removal of inorganic and organic anions in water via polymeric redox-active vinylferrocene (VFc) and pyrrole (Py) moieties. An Fe3O4@SiO2@PPy@P(VFc-co-HEMA) composite was prepared in a four-step process, with the outermost layer possessing heightened hydrophilicity

Triclocarban (TCC), considered an endocrine-disrupting, persistent, and bioaccumulating organic matter, has attracted a great deal of attention for its pollution and health risks. However, studies on its toxicological mechanism, especially for embryo development are limited. This article explores the cardiac developmental toxicity induced in zebrafish embryos after exposure to different TCC concentrations. First, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used in detecting TCC in embryos in vivo after exposure to various TCC. Results showed that embryonic TCC content reached 9.23 ng af

Superoxide radicals (O2•-) produced by the reaction of Fe(III) with H2O2 can regenerate Fe(II) in Fenton-like reactions, and conditions that facilitate this function enhance Fenton treatment. Here, we developed an efficient Fenton-like system by using calcium peroxide/biochar (CaO2/BC) composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, and tested it for enhanced O2•--based Fe(II) regeneration and faster sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. SMX degradation rates and peroxide utilization efficiencies were significantly higher with CaO2/BC than those with CaO2 or H2O2 lacking

Organotin compounds (OTs) are synthetic persistent organometallic xenobiotics widely used in several commercial applications. They exert well-described harmful effects in brain, liver, adipose tissue, and reproductive organs, as they are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), but the effects in the kidneys are less known. The kidneys are especially vulnerable to environmental contaminants because they are a metabolizing site of xenobiotics, therefore, pollutants can accumulate in renal tissue, leading to impaired renal function and to several renal abnormalities. Individuals chronically expose
