Alexithymic and autistic traits differentially predict personality disorder dimensions.

Alexithymia and autism are variably characterized by social cognitive and perceptual deficits, which can lead to profound social interaction difficulties. Such difficulties are also the hallmark of personality disorders (PDs), but the potential link between alexithymia, autism, and PDs remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether autistic and/or alexithymic traits are associated with specific PD dimensions as measured by the Assessment of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Personality Disorders Questionnaire (ADP-IV). We included individuals with a…

Investigating the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and personality traits.

BACKGROUND: This observational study investigates the potential link between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and personality disorders. The Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM)-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF) was used to assess personality traits, while TMD diagnosis was established by combining dental and clinical history with specific screening questionnaires, including the TMD-Pain Screener. METHODS: The study sample was recruited based on inclusion criteria requiring the presence of TMD-related symptoms (pain, joint clicking or functional limitat…

Sex differences in personality dysfunction in help-seeking adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding sex differences is crucial for improving diagnosis and treatment for personality disorders (PDs). This study aimed to investigate sex differences in personality dysfunction as per Criterion A of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in help-seeking adolescents. METHODS: The sample comprised 706 adolescent patients (mean age = 15.4 years; 80.88% females). Personality dysfunction was assessed using the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP 5.1). RESULTS: Females showed significantly higher overall personality dysfunction (C…

Exploring serotonergic psychedelics as a treatment for personality disorders.

Both psychotherapeutic interventions and pharmacological agents have demonstrated limited efficacy in the treatment of personality disorders (PDs). Emerging evidence suggests that psychedelic therapy, already showing promise in treating various psychiatric conditions commonly comorbid with PDs, may exert therapeutic effects by promoting adaptive changes in personality. Thus, psychedelic therapy could hold potential for addressing core features of PDs through shared mechanisms of personality modulation. Although historical literature and observational studies suggest the potential clinical util…

Personality Traits: "The Big Five" and "the Dark Triad".

Despite decades of literature, presently there are insufficient high-quality screening tools, preoperative measures, and postoperative comparisons of patients with "Big Five" personality disorders, or those with high expression of "Dark Triad" traits. Given modern advances in the conceptualization and diagnosis of these psychopathologies, there is significant patient and provider benefit to be gained in reevaluating the risks and benefits of cosmetic procedures in this population.

Bayesian Decision-Making Under Uncertainty in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Bayesian decision theory suggests that optimal decision-making should use and weigh prior beliefs with current information, according to their relative uncertainties. However, some characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients, such as fast, drastic changes in the overall perception of themselves and others, suggest they may be underrelying on priors. Here, we investigated if BPD patients have a general deficit in relying on or combining prior with current information. We analyzed this by having BPD patients (n = 23) and healthy controls (n = 18) perform a coin-catching sen…

Generalizable Links Between Borderline Personality Traits and Functional Connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) often manifest during adolescence, but the underlying relationship between these debilitating symptoms and the development of functional brain networks is not well understood. Here, we aimed to investigate how multivariate patterns of functional connectivity are associated with borderline personality traits in large samples of young adults and adolescents. METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging data from young adults and adolescents from the HCP-YA (Human Connectome Project Young Adult) (n = 870, ages 22-37 years, 4…

Temperamental underpinnings of borderline personality disorder and its facets.

Temperament is claimed to be the basis for personality; therefore, discovering the temperamental underpinnings of borderline personality disorder and its facets is crucial for understanding this personality disorder. In this article, we explore these underpinnings by using a new model of temperament, based on the Regulative Theory of Temperament, the Big Two of temperament, and the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits. Two studies were conducted on adults-the first was in a general population sample (N = 315) and the second was in a clinical sample (N = 113) in people with a diagnosis of borde…

Borderline personality disorder and social connectedness: A systematic review.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a debilitating disorder characterized by deficits in social connectedness, which is a multifaceted construct with structural (i.e., the number, diversity, or frequency of social relationships), functional (i.e., the actual or perceived resources relationships provide), and quality (i.e., the positive and negative aspects of social relationships) elements (Holt-Lunstad, 2018). However, the literature is sparse and lacks integration regarding which specific elements of social connectedness are deficient in BPD and why. This systematic review synthesized t…

Competing Models of Personality Disorder: Relations With Psychosocial Functioning.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), includes 10 categorical personality disorders (PD) in Section II (Section II PD) and a dimensional alternative model of PD (AMPD) in Section III. We compared the two models in explaining concurrent psychosocial functioning levels in psychiatric outpatients and community residents screened as at risk for PD pathology (N = 600). The AMPD's fully dimensional form showed stronger associations with psychosocial difficulties and explained more of their variance compared with the ca…

The association between discourse production and schizotypal personality traits.

Discourse abnormalities are a prominent feature in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including poor lexical diversity, and have been found to differentiate patients from healthy subjects. However, discourse processing in individuals with high schizotypal personality traits is less understood and is often overshadowed by research on clinical psychotic symptoms. In the present study, we examined schizotypal traits at a non-clinical threshold and their association with lexical diversity and discourse coherence using two automated Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools - Type-Token-Ratio (TTR) me…

Perception of stigma across diagnostic models of personality pathology.

Stigmatizing views surrounding mental illness are widespread. Personality disorders (PDs) are among the most stigmatized mental illnesses, as individuals with PDs are often described using pejorative terms, which might impact clinicians' a priori expectations and increase the likelihood of stigmatization, discrimination, or early termination from treatment. The degree to which the terms used in any diagnostic classification systems are stigmatizing has never been examined. The current study aims to explore the level of stigma perceived in diagnostic terms used and to compare which systems of c…

Staff Observational Differences Between Depressive Disorders and Personality Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Distinguishing those with a personality disorder from those with major depressive disorder (MDD) can be challenging, but establishing the correct diagnosis can direct appropriate management. AIM: To identify whether behavioural themes differ between those with personality disorders from those with MDD, and how those differences might relate to a clinical team's perception of diagnosis. METHOD: An observational study identifying all inpatients presenting with symptoms of depression. At discharge, patients (n = 60) underwent a structured diagnostic interview and were grouped acco…

Personality psychopathology in temporal lobe epilepsy: An Arabian study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has linked epilepsy of the temporal lobe (TLE) with comorbidities of psychiatric nature, yet few studies have investigated personality psychopathology in patients with TLE. This is the first study on the topic in the Arab world and the first study using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief From (PID-5-BF). Thus, this study, which is cross-sectional by nature, aims to explore the potential relationship between TLE and personality psychopathology. METHODS: Utilizing the validated Arabic version of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 - Brief Form (PID-5-BF), th…

THE ROLE OF PSYCHODYNAMIC AND PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT IN LONELINESS.

This review article explores the relationship between psychodynamic factors, personality organization, and loneliness. It focuses on extensive research into attachment styles, shame, pathological narcissism, and personality disorders. Insecure attachment styles, both anxious and avoidant, emerge as significant predictors of loneliness. Their effects are shown to be mediated by disconnection-rejection schemas and diminished emotional intelligence. The shame and pathological narcissism, especially narcissistic vulnerability, also correlate strongly with increased loneliness and decreased life sa…

Symptom domains and psychosocial functioning in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by severe functional impairment, even after a decrease in symptoms. A comprehensive understanding of psychosocial functioning in BPD is necessary to tailor treatment offer, which should address relevant aspects of daily life. The aims of the present study are to (1) conduct a cross-sectional comparison of functioning of a group with BPD and a non-BPD clinical comparison group at service entry, and to (2) assess the relationship between intensity of BPD symptom domains and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: The sample con…
