Understanding Mechanisms of Genetic Risk for Adolescent Internalizing and Externalizing Problems: The Mediating Role of Parenting and Personality.

Genetic predispositions play an important role in the development of internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Understanding the mechanisms through which genetic risk unfolds to influence these developmental outcomes is critical for developing prevention and intervention efforts, capturing key elements of Irv's research agenda and scientific legacy. In this study, we examined the role of parenting and personality in mediating the effect of genetic risk on adolescents' major depressive disorder and conduct disorder symptoms. Longitudinal data were drawn from a sample of 709 European American a

The personality trait self-directedness predicts the amygdala's reaction to appetizing cues in fMRI.

Personality and neural response to food cues in various mesolimbic brain structures have been linked to eating disorders. We investigated the question of whether personality traits in healthy individuals correlate with the brain activation induced on confrontation with appetizing visual stimuli. Personality was assessed in 27 normal-weight participants (14 women, mean age=26.0, SD=3.3 years) with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). After an overnight fast, participants viewed blocks of pictures, half containing appetizing food and the other half showing scrambled pictures as control

Childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Childhood trauma is known to predispose to a variety of psychiatric disorders, including mood, anxiety, eating, and personality disorders. However, the relationship between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms has not been well studied. This study examines the relationship between childhood trauma, personality facets, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in 938 college students using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Leyton Obsessional Inventory, and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Between 13 and 30% of subjects met criteria for childhood trauma, with emotional neglect

Posttraumatic stress disorder in incarcerated juvenile delinquents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in severely delinquent subjects and to measure associated personality characteristics. METHOD: Eighty-five incarcerated boys (mean age 16.6, SD = 1.2) with mostly violent offenses were studied. The sample was representative of the California Youth Authority population. They received a standard psychiatric screen, a semistructured interview for PTSD, and self-report questionnaires measuring personality traits and defenses. A nonclinical sex- and age-matched group was used for comparing psychometrics. RESULTS: Subjects

Psychopathology as dynamic markers of alcohol initiation across development: A three-year longitudinal examination.

Sipping, an early form of alcohol initiation, is associated with aspects of psychopathology and personality that reflect long-term risk for harmful alcohol use. In the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development cohort (N = 11,872), sipping by age 9-10 was concurrently associated with impulsivity, other aspects of externalizing, and prodromal schizophrenia symptoms. Still, these associations were cross-sectional in nature, leaving open the possibility that these features of psychopathology and personality might not reflect long-term risk for alcohol consumption and related harm across developme

Individual correlates of self-stigma in patients with anxiety disorders with and without comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: A number of psychiatric patients experience stigma connected to prejudices about mental disorders. It has been shown that stigma is most harmful when it is internalized. Most of the studies were performed on individuals either with psychoses or with mood disorders, and hence, there are almost no studies with other diagnostic categories. The goals of this research were to identify factors that are significantly related to self-stigma in patients with anxiety disorders and to suggest possible models of causality for these relationships. METHODS: A total of 109 patients with anxiety

The mental organization of primitive personalities and its treatment implications.

A description is presented of the mental organization of primitive personalities (American borderlines, British paranoid-schizoid), as well as a generic course of analytic therapy I have sometimes experienced with them. Their mental organization may be qualitatively rather than quantitatively different from that of less disturbed persons. The differences are mostly attributable to a rudimentary psychic differentiation and integration, and compensatory pathological relationships. This configuration is hypothesized to have a unique developmental course, originating from a combination of constitu

Structure of problem behaviors in preadolescence.

Earlier research suggests that diverse adolescent problem behaviors, such as substance use, school problems, early sexual intercourse, and delinquency, reflect a single underlying dimension of behavior. Data from an ongoing longitudinal study were used to examine this issue in a previously unexamined sample (N = 426) of preadolescent sixth-grade youth. Ss included boys and girls from diverse socioeconomic and racial/ethnic backgrounds, whose average ages were 11 and 12. By using confirmatory factor analyses to test competing models, multiple factor structures were detected, suggesting that ear

The effects of marital disruption on adolescents: time as a dynamic.

As part of an ongoing ten-year longitudinal research project, 382 15-year-olds from a white, working-class community were studied. Findings indicate that those who experienced parental separation more recently were most likely to be adversely affected, and that girls from recently disrupted families were more likely than boys to experience problems in emotional and behavioral functioning and were likely to express dissatisfaction with available levels of social support.

The experience of food insecurity during and following homelessness in high-income countries: A systematic review and meta-aggregation.

Homelessness is a pervasive challenge caused by poverty which continues to grow in economically developed countries, posing significant health impacts (Fazel et al., Lancet, 384: 1529-1540, 2014). While food security related to poverty and low income has been investigated, this review specifically explores the experience of food security during and following homelessness. Given the fact that the health of individuals who experience homelessness is known to be poor and the importance of nutrition, this is a necessary contribution. Informed by a health equity lens, this review synthesises the fi

Mood and global functioning in borderline personality disorder: individual regression models for longitudinal measurements.

This report addresses the need for prospective studies of personality disorders, as well as some of the difficulties encountered in longitudinal studies when missing data occur due to subject attrition and variable follow-up intervals. Various statistical methods for handling repeated measurements data are reviewed. Many of these methods are quite complex and require expert statistical skills. A simpler way to handle multivariate data using single-number summary scores is proposed as an alternative which is efficient and more readily understood by professionals in many disciplines. Findings ar

An analysis of the relationship of selected personality traits on perceived stress in patients undergoing ablation for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the correlation between selected personality traits and the level of perceived stress in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. These arrhythmias are among the most common cardiac rhythm disorders. Previous research suggests that psychological factors such as stress and personality traits may correlate their development and clinical course. Understanding these relationships may improve the effectiveness of patient care, particularly in terms of psychological support during the perioperat

Preschool Big Five Personality Traits Predict Childhood Peer Relationships and BPD but Not MDD in Late Adolescence.

Growing literatures highlight shared childhood predictors for future borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few longitudinal studies have examined both BPD and MDD as simultaneous outcomes. Childhood personality traits and poor peer relationships constitute transdiagnostic phenomena that could impact risk for later BPD and MDD. The current study examined whether school-age peer relationships mediated associations between preschool Big Five traits and adolescent BPD and/or MDD. Preschool Big Five traits were assessed through observational coding. Sch

A scoping review of programmes that address the daily living functioning of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: People diagnosed with borderline personality disorder experience persistent functional impairment despite current evidence-based treatment. Domains of daily living functioning, such as establishing a routine, household management and self-care, can be important goals for rehabilitation. This review aimed to scope and synthesise programmes that address the daily living functioning of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. METHODS: This review followed the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodological g

Attitude and risk of substance use in adolescents diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a stage of development with increased risk of drug use. Individual personality traits are among those factors that influence the onset of substance use in adolescence and its psychiatric comorbidity. Little research has been done on the comorbidity between substance abuse risk and Asperger syndrome, and none specifically in adolescence. The objective of this study is to assess the risk of drug use by adolescents with Asperger syndrome and compare it with that risk in control subjects. A secondary objective was to analyze the personality factors that may be associated

[IMPACT OF TUBERCULOSIS INFECTION ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STATUS OF CHILDREN].

Eighty-nine children aged 10 to 14 years with various manifestations of tuberculosis infection were examined using the psychometric tests: Eysenck's personality questionnaire adapted for children, J. Taylor's manifest anxiety scale adapted by T. A. Nemchinova, and the correction test. The Kérdö vegetative index was calculated to determine sympathetic-parasympathetic influences on the regulatory mechanisms of autonomic functions. Tuberculosis infection was found to have no impact on personality directions, but introverts were more among first infected and ill children. The more pronounced manif

The relational-interdependent self-construal, self-concept consistency, and well-being.

Examination of the assumptions underlying consistency perspectives in social and personality psychology reveals that they are based on an independent, individualistic view of the self. If the self is constructed as relational or interdependent with others, consistency may be less important in social behavior and well-being. Using a variety of measures of well-being, the studies showed that there is a weaker relation between consistency and well-being for individuals with a highly relational self-construal than for those with a low relational self-construal. Study 3 examined the association bet
