AIM: Few studies have investigated Internet Addiction (IA) in adolescents in relation to personality characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine whether personality differences exist between adolescents with problematic/pathological Internet use and those with normal Internet use. Our hypothesis was that certain psychopathological personality traits may predispose to the development of maladaptive Internet use.
METHODS: The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A) were administered to a sample of 224 high school students…

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are clinically relevant in Parkinson disease (PD) patients, with an established association with PD medication. Aim of our study was to study whether the increased frequency of pathological gambling (PG), reported in subgroups of PD patients, is related to specific personality tracts additional to dopaminergic medications. Thirty-seven PD patients with a personal history of PG where enrolled. Twenty one PD patients, matched for disease and dopaminergic therapy, never experiencing PG, were enrolled as controls. All subjects were tested with the Minnesota Multiph

Using data from a large Australian twin sample we examined the extent to which genetic variation in the Big Three personality dimensions (positive emotionality, negative emotionality, and constraint) and their lower-order components explained genetic variation in the risk for disordered gambling (DG) among men and women. Genetic influences contributing to individual differences in normal-range personality traits explained over 40% of the genetic risk for DG, with a larger contribution among women than among men. The largest and most robust contributions came from the higher-order personality d

The International Classification of Diseases, 11th Edition (ICD-11) has reconceptualized personality disorders (PD), and measures are therefore being developed to aid the assessment of ICD-11 PD. The present study examined the validity of the recently developed self-report inventory the Personality Disorder Severity for ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11), and its utility in differentiating across ICD-11 PD severity levels in a community mental health sample (n = 232). We examined the associations between the PDS-ICD-11 with various clinician ratings, self-report questionnaires, and informant-report measures

Much research has demonstrated that psychopathology can be described in terms of broad dimensions, representing liability for multiple psychiatric disorders. Broad spectra of psychopathology (e.g., internalizing and externalizing) are increasingly used as targets for research investigating the development, etiology, and course of psychopathology because they account for patterns of relatedness among disorders that were once presumed distinct. Thus, these spectra represent alluring targets due to their comprehensive and parsimonious nature. Nevertheless, little research has established the role

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) features a new classification of personality disorders (PD), focusing on the severity of PD. Although there are numerous self-report measures that assess PD severity, to date only the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) is based on ICD-11's operationalization of PD. Initial results indicated that the PDS-ICD-11 measures a unidimensional construct, but the assumptions made for scoring its bipolar items had not been fully examined. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and investigate the latent structure of the German versi

The Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) operationalizes Criterion A of the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. Despite progress in LPFS measurement development and validation, there is a lack of research, and some disagreement, concerning structural, convergent, and incremental validity of LPFS self-report measures. The present study aimed to compare the LPFS Self-Report, LPFS Self-Report of Criterion A, and LPFS Brief Form. Internal structure was assessed through principal component analyses, factor analyses, and bifactor analyses of unidimensionality. Associations wi

We examined the personality characteristics of depressed patients with and without atypical depression. Of 195 depressed outpatients in a randomized treatment trial of fluoxetine or nortriptyline, 16 met DSM-IV criteria for atypical depression. We compared the personality traits and disorders in those with and without atypical depression. In atypical depression, fluoxetine was superior to nortriptyline. On the Temperament and Character Inventory, those with atypical depression had high attachment, low persistence, and high anticipatory anxiety. A temperament construct of these dimensions was a

The effects of bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) lesions on emotional and personality functioning were studied. Patients undergoing cingulotomy for chronic intractable pain were assessed on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Profile of Mood States (POMS), cognitive tests, and pain ratings, pre- and postsurgically. Patients with intractable pain, not treated with cingulotomy, served as controls. Cingulotomy patients experienced reductions in POMS-Tension, POMS-Anger, and MMPI Scale 7 (Psychasthenia) compared with baseline and the controls. POMS-Tension was signi…

The present study examines the differences in the presentation of psychopathology between active duty military and veteran patients enrolled in alcohol rehabilitation programs. The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory was used to assess personality disorders, clinical syndromes, and substance abuse. Most veterans were seen as having avoidant and dependent personality disorders as well as a great deal of anxiety and depression. Forty-seven percent were above cutoff scores for alcohol abuse. Air Force patients were predominantly narcissistic and antisocial with much less distress. Only 9% were c
