Distinctions between the dementia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with frontotemporal dementia and the dementia of Alzheimer's disease.

The clinical entity of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis with Frontotemporal Dementia (ALS-FTD) has only recently been recognized as an important neurodegenerative disease. As in isolated FTD, the behavioral and personality changes in ALS-FTD might be more characteristic than its cognitive changes. We aimed to characterize the behavioral and cognitive deficits in ALS-FTD, and contrast this profile with that of the most common form of dementia, AD, to assist ALS clinicians in recognizing the syndrome early in its course. Specifically, we hypothesized that a modified version of the Frontal Behaviora

Capacity for decision-making in Alzheimer's disease: selfhood, positioning and semiotic people.

The aim of this article is to explore some of the ethical issues surrounding the assessment and determination of capacity of people with dementia in light of their meaning-making ability as shown through discourse. Discourse analysis, two illustrative cases, social construction theory and positioning are used to highlight some of the ethical dilemmas involved in basing a determination of capacity on the diagnosis of dementia and neuropsychological tests of cognitive function. Although neuropsychological tests have their place in assessing some aspects of cognitive function, aspects cognition s

Cognitive flexibility and attention to detail in adolescents and adults with severe forms of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if adolescents and adults diagnosed with anorexia nervosa differ in their levels of cognitive flexibility and attention to detail independently of potential confounds. METHOD: Sixty-two adolescents and 54 adults were assessed while receiving inpatient treatment and completed the following self-reports: Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire, Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory and Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Performance-based evaluations included the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test Computerised Version, the Comprehensive Trail Making Test, the Brixton Sp

[Psychosomatic aspects of pathology of biliary passages].

The work was designed to study psychological features of patients with hypomotor dysfunction of biliary passages, chronic non-calculous cholecystitis with and without opistorchosis and cholelithiasis before and after cholecystectomy. A total of 343 patients were examined between 1997 and 2007. The control group comprised 100 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. All patients signed the informed consent. Significance of the difference between absolute and relative parameters was estimated using Student's t-test at three significance levels (0.05, 0.001, 0.001---??). There were no differences b

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder increases cognitive inflexibility in people with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD) have a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, that may impact clinically relevant outcomes (e.g., cognitive impairment and executive dysfunction). Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a common psychiatric comorbidity in CAD. It has a distinct cognitive profile characterised by inflexible thinking and executive dysfunction, which in turn may affect treatment adherence. However, the impact of OCPD on cognitive functioning in CAD is under-researched. We aimed to investigate the impact of OCPD on execut

Dysfunctional personality beliefs and emotion recognition in individuals with methamphetamine dependence.

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with methamphetamine dependence have impaired emotion recognition. However, heterogeneity in results from these studies may indicate that individual factors such as personality beliefs moderate emotion recognition deficits. Thus, we aimed to examine the relationship between dimensional estimates of dysfunctional personality beliefs and facial emotion recognition in 86 Australian treatment seekers with methamphetamine dependence. Dysfunctional beliefs were measured using the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire, and emotion recognition was measur

Are Patients With Alcohol-Related Seizures a Specific Subgroup?

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-related seizures are acute symptomatic seizures most frequently associated with alcohol withdrawal. However, little is known about the phenotypic characteristics of patients with alcohol-related seizures. This study evaluated the clinical features and personality traits of alcohol use disorder patients with alcohol-related seizures. METHODS: This comparative correlational study assessed the clinical and psychological covariates of alcohol-related seizures. A total of 144 alcohol-dependent patients were recruited from an alcoholism unit from January 2017 to January 2019 and

Personality trait predictors of placebo analgesia and neurobiological correlates.

Personality traits have been shown to interact with environmental cues to modulate biological responses including treatment responses, and potentially having a role in the formation of placebo effects. Here, we assessed psychological traits in 50 healthy controls as to their capacity to predict placebo analgesic effects, placebo-induced activation of μ-opioid neurotransmission and changes in cortisol plasma levels during a sustained experimental pain challenge (hypertonic saline infused in the masseter muscle) with and without placebo administration. Statistical analyses showed that an aggrega

TEMPS-I: delineating the most discriminant traits of the cyclothymic, depressive, hyperthymic and irritable temperaments in a nonpatient population.

BACKGROUND: Although most personality constructs have been standardized in population studies, cyclothymic, depressive, irritable and hyperthymic temperaments putatively linked to mood disorders have been classically derived from clinical observations. METHODS: We therefore administered the semi-structured affective temperament schedule of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego, Interview version (TEMPS-I) -- in its original University of Tennessee operationalization -- to 1010 Italian students aged between 14 and 26. The interview, administered in a randomized format, took 20 min per subject. R

A personality profile of patients diagnosed with post-polio syndrome.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) refers to the late development of new neuromuscular symptoms in previously stable poliomyelitis patients. Whether psychological disturbance plays a role in the manifestation of symptoms in these patients is unclear. We examined 22 patients fulfilling the clinical criteria for PPS with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-II (MMPI-II), Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scales, Chapman and Chapman Psychosis-Proneness Scales, Fatigue Scales, a neurobehavioral rating scale, and Cognitive Symptoms Self-Report Scales. Tourette syndrome: relation to children's and parents' self-concepts.

We investigated the self-concepts of Tourette Syndrome patients and their mothers. The subjects were 30 children with Tourette Syndrome and their mothers, and 30 children matched on age, sex, and socioeconomic status and their mothers. The results indicated that, while the children did not differ on self-concept, the mothers of the Tourette Syndrome patients had lower self-concepts than the mothers of the controls, suggesting that family members should be considered in the treatment of the Tourette Syndrome children. In addition, severity of illness was positively correlated with the children'

The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory A-Trait Scale: dimensions and their generalization.

The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory A-Trait scale was administered to 152 female and 158 male students. Principal-components factor analyses yielded four orthogonal factors for each sex. The findings indicated that factor pattern comparisons should be made prior to pooling data across sex for psychometric investigations. Also, limited support was found for the generalization of dimensions across sex and samples both within and between cultures.

The relationship between personality traits and anxiety/depression levels in different drug abusers' groups.

Aim. Since psychosocial characteristics of drug abuse involve mainly specific personality and emotional changes, it is very important to investigate characteristics of addictive personality in relationship with emotional state of the individual. Considering that, the objective of this study was to analyse the relationship between personality structure and emotional state of two different groups: heroin addicts and recreate drug abusers. Methods. The total of 288 (219 males and 69 females; 191 heroin addicts and 97 recreate drug users) clients of Centre for the prevention and treatment of drug

[The distressed personality (type D)--correlations with anger, aggression and hostility].

Type D (distressed personality) comprises the joint tendency to experience negative emotions (negative affectivity) and to inhibit these emotions in social situations (social inhibition). The distressed personality can be assessed by the Type D scale (DS14). In the present study, the German version of the DS14 was to be validated especially with regard to its interrelation with anger, aggression and hostility. The study included a clinical sample of 90 patients with coronary heart disease and a nonclinical sample of 86 participants. The two-factor structure of the DS14 could be confirmed in bo

Self-report vs. laboratory measures of aggression as predictors of substance abuse.

Measures of aggressive behavior, antisocial personality, criminality, and impulsivity were obtained on a sample of 85 drug abusing volunteers for studies at the Addiction Research Center in Baltimore. Measures included the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, Diagnostic Interview Schedule Antisocial Personality Disorder diagnosis, Elliott-Huizinga Lifetime Events Scale, Eysenck's Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy scales, and a laboratory measure of aggression patterned after the Buss 'aggression machine'. All of the self-report measures of aggression and antisocial personality were moderately

Hostility as a risk factor for mortality and ischemic heart disease in men.

We report the association between hostility and the incidence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in 3,750 Finnish men aged 40-59. Hostility was assessed from self-ratings on irritability, ease of anger-arousal, and argumentativeness, and four groups were formed from the summed hostility ratings. At baseline, the age-adjusted relative risk (RR) of the prevalence of angina pectoris between the highest and lowest hostility groups was 2.88 (95% confidence limits (CL), range 1.71-4.77). A three-year follow-up yielded 65 deaths and 109 IHD-incident cases. Hostility did not predict IHD among healthy men

Risk factors for myocardial infarction: the importance of relaxation.

Several risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were examined, including history of smoking and hypercholesterolemia, income, education, coronary-prone behaviour by Structured Interview (SI) and the type and quality of stress-reducing relaxing activities, in a case-control study. Our sample included 100 AMI patients (80 males and 20 females, with mean ages 57.3 and 64.1 years, respectively), as well as 100 age- and sex-matched controls. Univariate differences between cases and controls were significant for history of smoking, income level, SI-defined hostility, SI-defined suppressio
