Suprapubic Varicose Veins Idiopathic: A Rare Presentation of Perineal Pelvic Retrograde Flow.

Background: Varicose pubic collateral veins are a rare phenomenon secondary to obstruction of the common femoral vein, left external iliac, or common iliac vein. This article aims to describe the clinical case of a 75-year-old female patient who presented with varicose collateral suprapubic veins.Case report: A 75-year-old female patient from a rural area in Colombia presented to the emergency department complaining of a 4-day history of edema, erythema, and pain in the suprapubic region. The patient presented with large varicose veins in the suprapubic region with erythema, warmth, and pain o

Dural venous sinus anatomy in children with external hydrocephalus: analysis of a series of 97 patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomical variations of dural venous sinuses in children with external hydrocephalus, proposing a radiological grading of progressive anatomic restriction to venous outflow based on brain phase-contrast magnetic resonance venography (PC-MRV); to evaluate the correlation between positional plagiocephaly and dural sinuses patency; and to compare these findings with a control group to ascertain the role of anatomical restriction to venous outflow in the pathophysiology of external hydrocephalus. METHODS: Brain MRI and PC MRV were performed in 97 children (76 males, 21 f

Axillary vein thrombosis induced by an increasingly popular oscillating dumbbell exercise device: a case report.

A 53 year-old male presented with a one-day history of a swollen arm and dull, aching pain in the right upper extremity. The patient reported commencing exercising daily over the prior week with a modified, oscillating dumbbell; commonly referred to as a Shake Weight. Imaging revealed an occlusive thrombus in the right axillary, proximal brachial and basilic veins. The patient was treated with a 24-hour tPA infusion followed by mechanical thrombectomy, balloon angioplasty, and stent placement for a residual thrombus and stenosis. The patient was discharged the following day on warfarin and asp

In vivo evaluation of safety and performance of a nitinol venous stent in an ovine iliac venous model.

BACKGROUND: Obstruction of the iliocaval venous outflow tract is a common cause of acute and chronic venous symptoms. Percutaneous stenting is now frequently performed to alleviate obstruction in the central venous system. However, currently used stents were primarily designed for biliary or arterial indications and may not be optimal for use in the venous system. This study evaluated the safety and performance of a novel venous stent (NVS) designed specifically for venous applications in an in vivo venous animal model. METHODS: The study evaluated vascular response and safety of the NVS comp

Catheter-directed interventions for acute iliocaval deep vein thrombosis.

Acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is associated with significant morbidity in the form of acute limb-threatening compromise from phlegmasia cerulea dolens, development of the postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), and even death secondary to pulmonary embolism. Initial therapy for DVT is anticoagulation, which inhibits thrombus propagation but lacks the thrombolytic properties to facilitate active thrombus removal. The existing thrombus burden can cause increased venous hypertension from occlusion as well as damage to venous valves by initiating an inflammatory response, which can ultimately result in

The use of transscrotal venography to guide treatment of a persistent grade 3 varicocele after failure of previous microsurgical varicocelectomy and embolization.

Varicoceles affect approximately 15% of male patients, most of whom have resolution of symptoms and objective findings with microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy. We present an interesting case of a 16-year-old male patient with persistent symptomatic varicocele despite varicocelectomy and gonadal vein embolization.

Absent right superior vena cava with persistent left superior vena cava: two case reports.

Persistent left and absent right superior vena cava is a rare congenital anomaly, which is usually asymptomatic. Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is generally coexistent with right superior vena cava (RSVC), but rarely associated with absent RSVC. Herein, we report two children referred to our department because of ventricular septal defect. We determined PLSVC with absent RSVC during the angiography.

Duplicated coronary sinus with a connecting branch.

A 48-year-old woman with class III heart failure and left bundle branch block underwent an implantation for cardiac resynchronization therapy. Right anterior oblique (RAO) view coronary sinus (CS) venography suggested the antero- and postero-lateral branches appeared to arise from the same vessel of a duplicated CS, but the antero-lateral branch arising from a different vessel was visualized via a connecting branch by the contrast injected into the vessel with the postero-lateral branch, and the distal parts of the two vessels were superimposed in the RAO view. This unusual anomaly may have th

Hybrid right-left cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator implantation in persistent left superior vena cava.

Persistence of the left superior vena cava (PLSVC), observed in 0.3% of the general population as established by autopsy, is an anatomic variation particularly relevant when occurring in patients in need of a transvenous pacing. In this report, we describe a hybrid right-left cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator implantation approach in a patient with PLSVC. In our experience, the described approach proved feasible and safe, and may be considered an option in case of complex vein anatomy before referring for cardiac surgical implantation of a left ventricular lead.

Early detection and successful treatment of cerebral venous thrombosis associated with minimal change nephrotic syndrome.

Although venous thrombosis is a major complication in nephrotic syndrome, cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is rarely reported. We describe a 29-year-old male with nephrotic syndrome who suddenly developed headache and nausea. Although computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging detected no abnormal lesions, phase-contrast magnetic resonance venography (PC MRV) demonstrated extensive thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus. After receiving systemic anticoagulant therapy and oral prednisolone, his neurological symptoms improved dramatically, and complete remission from nephrotic sy

Evaluation of the internal vertebral venous plexus, vertebral canal, dural sac, and vertebral body via nonselective computed tomographic venography in the cervical vertebral column in healthy dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate nonselective computed tomographic (CT) venography for evaluating the cervical internal vertebral venous plexus (IVVP), define the diameter and area dimensions of the IVVP, and determine the relationship between dimensions of the cervical IVVP and other vertebral components in medium-sized dogs. Animals-6 healthy dogs that weighed 18 to 27 kg. Procedure-Helical CT scans were performed from C1 to C7 before and after IV injection of contrast medium (480 mg of iodine/kg) and a continuous infusion (240 mg of iodine/kg). Image data were transferred to a CT workstation, and mea

[The third venous system of the lower extremity and its clinical significance].

In deep venous thrombotic and aplasia cases superficial veins become dilated. With the resulting incompetence of the valves, venous blood stream is not directed to the heart, but to the ankle as well. In these cases the superficial system does not support the venous drainage of the limb, but gives a further load. The question is if one can ameliorate the venous drainage with removal of insufficient varicose veins, or does it make the outcome worse? A new examination was developed to determine if collateral veins in the subfascial space are enough to drain the venous blood of the limb. A tensio

Radionuclide venography and the surgical treatment of chronic venous disease of the lower extremity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the use of radionuclide venography in detecting the site and the functional value of blood reflux through incompetent perforating veins of the leg of patients with chronic venous disease. METHODS: In this study we evaluated the management of 29 patients (34 lower limbs) who were admitted with chronic venous disease of the lower limbs (in 7 with ulcers refractory to conservative management), surgically treated between 1991 and 1994 on the basis of physical examination and scintigraphic detection of pathological venous refluxes. RESULTS: In 26
