Enhanced presynaptic mitochondrial energy production is required for memory formation.

Some of the prominent features of long-term memory formation include protein synthesis, gene expression, enhanced neurotransmitter release, increased excitability, and formation of new synapses. As these processes are critically dependent on mitochondrial function, we hypothesized that increased mitochondrial respiration and dynamics would play a prominent role in memory formation. To address this possibility, we measured mitochondrial oxygen consumption (OCR) in hippocampal tissue punches from trained and untrained animals. Our results show that context fear training significantly increased b

360° Video virtual reality exposure therapy for public speaking anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a prevalent condition which is highly interrelated with social anxiety. PSA can be effectively treated with exposure therapy. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is increasingly being explored as a novel and cost-effective mode of treatment. No previous randomized controlled trial has examined whether stand-alone 360° video VRET is an effective intervention for treating PSA and interrelated disorder relevant fears. Further, studies have not explored whether 360° video content influences VRET outcomes. Participants with high PSA (n = 51) were randomly alloca

Prevalence and course of anxiety disorders and symptoms from preschool to adolescence: a 6-wave community study.

BACKGROUND: The rate of various anxiety disorders in early childhood and whether they continue into middle childhood or adolescence is not known. We therefore report on the prevalence and stability of DSM-5-defined anxiety disorders and their symptoms, capturing the period from preschool to adolescence. METHODS: By means of interviewer-based clinical interviews, anxiety was measured in a sample of Norwegian children at six measurement points from age 4 to 14 (n = 1,041). To adjust for time-invariant factors, we applied random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) capturing within-per

Use of cannabidiol in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabidiol (CBD) has a proposed novel role in the management of anxiety owing to its actions on the endocannabinoid system. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the current evidence on the safety and efficacy of CBD in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders. DATA SOURCES: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts from database inception through June 2019. A bibliographic search of relevant articles was also conducted. STUDY SELECTION: Articles published from case reports, case series, or randomized cont

Comorbid Social Anxiety Disorder in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Social anxiety symptoms are common among cognitively unimpaired youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Few studies have investigated the co-occurrence of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults with ASD, although identification may aid access to effective treatments and inform our scientific efforts to parse heterogeneity. In this preliminary study, we examined the clinical presentation of SAD in adults with ASD (n = 28), relative to SAD uncomplicated by ASD (n = 26). A large subset (50 %) of the adults with ASD met diagnostic criteria for SAD. The adults with ASD plus SAD differed from th

Should non-fat-phobic anorexia nervosa be included in DSM-V?

OBJECTIVE: Cross-cultural data suggest that rationales for food refusal vary in anorexia nervosa (AN), and a variant, termed non-fat-phobic AN (NFP-AN), has been described. This review evaluates whether data support modification of the requirement for intense fear of weight gain to meet AN criterion B in DSM-V. METHOD: We performed a systematic search of the Medline and PsychInfo literature and evaluated the relevant publications by Robins and Guze's (Am J Psychiatry 126, 983-987, 1970) criteria as a standard for diagnostic validity. We also performed a meta-analysis comparing the severity of

Cephalalgiaphobia: a possible specific phobia of illness.

Psychiatric comorbidity, mainly anxiety and depression, are common in chronic migraine (CM). Phobias are reported by half of CM patients. Phobic avoidance associated with fear of headache or migraine attack has never been adequately described. We describe 12 migraine patients with particular phobic-avoidant behaviours related to their headache attacks, which we classified as a specific illness phobia, coined as cephalalgiaphobia. All patients were women, mean age 42, and all had a migraine diagnosis (11 CM, all overused acute medications). Patients had either a phobia of a headache attack duri

An evaluation of paroxetine in generalised social anxiety disorder.

It is estimated that social anxiety disorder affects approximately 13.3% individuals within the community at some point in their lifetime and is associated with significant functional impairment. A variety of drug groups have demonstrated efficacy in treating social anxiety disorder, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paroxetine is an SSRI approved by the FDA and Health Canada for the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions. Paroxetine has been the most studied agent in social anxiety disorder and has been shown to be effective in short-term, fixed- and flexibl

The experience of disability and quality of life in social anxiety disorder.

Although disability is a concept most often associated with role dysfunction, and quality of life is most often associated with life satisfaction, these terms are frequently used interchangeably in the literature. In contrast, this study proposes that disability and quality of life are independent but related constructs. Additionally, we propose that disability partially mediates the relationship between symptoms and quality of life. That is, greater symptoms are associated with more impairment, which is, in turn, associated with less satisfaction with one's life. Ninety-six individuals with s

ESB in the treatment of addiction. A case report.

Alcohol and drug addiction are common with people with psychiatric disorders and addiction problems can be primary, leading to psychiatric disorders, or secondary to psychiatric disorder. Treating the primary problem first often helps the patient to recover from the secondary problems also. We present a case of a lady with severe social phobia, who recovered from both from her social phobia and her addiction problems after ESB.

Systematic assessment of social phobia in clinical practice.

The purpose of this review is to propose a systematic approach to the assessment of social phobia for monitoring treatment outcome in clinical settings. A selection of measures is available, including questionnaires and structured interviews varying in length, complexity, and content. To design an assessment protocol for a particular patient or patient population, the clinician needs to be familiar with the characteristics of these available measures. The measures selected for detailed description and discussion here: (a) are specifically designed to assess social anxiety and social phobia, (b

Biology of anxiety.

Our understanding of the biological basis of anxiety is far from complete, although our knowledge of both the neuropharmacologic and molecular basis of anxiety has increased. This article reviews our current knowledge of the possible biological basis of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Nosology of atypical depression.

A review of the literature on atypical depression indicated three relatively separate usages for the term: anxiety or phobic symptoms additional to depression, reversed functional shift, and non-endogenous depression. A sample of 160 out-patient depressives was rated on a variety of diagnostic systems measuring these concepts. Inter-relationships between groups selected by the three definitions were found to be low. In addition, although there was moderate consistency within different definitions of endogenous depression and of additional anxiety, reversed functional shift symptoms did not cor

Management of anxiety disorders: the added challenge of comorbidity.

Patients with anxiety present with a wide variety of disorders that cause significant impairment to their everyday lives. To complicate matters, patients seldom present with just one anxiety disorder. Such comorbidity, particularly where depression is also present, has important implications for both the patient and the physician. The patient typically suffers from a greater degree of everyday impairment, is more reliant on healthcare services, in particular mental health services, and may be at a greater risk of attempting suicide. For the physician, comorbidity in anxiety disorders presents
