Numerical study of gas-phase interactions of phosphorus compounds with co-flow diffusion flames.

The effects of phosphorus-containing compounds (PCCs) on the extinguishment and structure of methane-air coflow diffusion flames, in the cup-burner configuration, is studied computationally. Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), trimethyl phosphate (TMP), or phosphoric acid is added to either the air or fuel flow. Time-dependent axisymmetric computation is performed with full gas-phase chemistry and transport to reveal the flame structure and inhibition process. A detailed chemical-kinetics model (77 species and 886 reactions) is constructed by combining the methane-oxygen combustion and phosphor

Phytic acid-induced durable fire-proof and hydrophobic complex coating for versatile cotton fabrics.

To address the current development requirements for multifunctional cotton fabrics, a phytic acid-induced flame-retardant hydrophobic coating containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silicon (Si) was grafted on the surface of cotton fabrics using a facile step-by-step immersion method. The limiting oxygen index value improved to 31.2 %, decreasing to 26.7 % after 50 laundering cycles, while the fabric remained self-extinguishing effect in the vertical flammability test and showed a water contact angle of 126.1°. Cone calorimetry test showed that the modified fabric could not be ignited at

Development, calibration, and evaluation of a model of Pseudo-nitzschia and domoic acid production for regional ocean modeling studies.

Pseudo-nitzschia species are one of the leading causes of harmful algal blooms (HABs) along the western coast of the United States. Approximately half of known Pseudo-nitzschia strains can produce domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin that can negatively impact wildlife and fisheries and put human life at risk through amnesic shellfish poisoning. Production and accumulation of DA, a secondary metabolite synthesized during periods of low primary metabolism, is triggered by environmental stressors such as nutrient limitation. To quantify and estimate the feedbacks between DA production and environmenta

The Association of Hypophosphatemia With Resistant Lactic Acidosis in Critical Care Illness.

Critically ill patients are known to have a variety of electrolyte abnormalities. Lactic acidosis can frequently be seen secondary to shock states and is usually treated with aggressive volume resuscitation. Interestingly, hypophosphatemia is a potential cause of resistant lactic acidosis, which may not be as commonly identified or considered. We present a case of a 42-year-old man admitted twice over a span of 6 months with an elevated lactate level that did not resolve with volume resuscitation. It was ultimately determined that his lactic acidosis was due to hypophosphatemia after ruling ou

Versatile reagent Ph3 As(OTf)2: one-pot synthesis of [P7(AsPh3)3][OTf]3 from PCl3.

Compound Ph3 As(OTf)2 as a pentacoordinated As(V) Lewis acid readily forms dicationic Lewis acid/base adducts upon addition of various Lewis bases. It also represents a stronger chloride-abstracting agent than Me3 SiOTf and facilitates the reductive coupling of PCl3 in the presence of AsPh3 to the unprecedented cation [P7 (AsPh3 )3](3+) as triflate salt. This crystallographically characterized nortricyclane-type cation represents a P7 R3 -derivative with the most electron-withdrawing substituents, resulting in a pronounced effect on the structural parameters of the P7 core.

Solid-state P-31 NMR study of octacalcium phosphate incorporated with succinate.

Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is an important model compound in the study of biomineralization. The octacalcium phosphate-succinate (OCPS) compound is prepared and characterized by (31)P solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Taking advantage of the fact that the crystal structures of OCP and OCPS are very similar, an NMR strategy based on the (31)P homonuclear double-quantum spectroscopy is developed to assign all the peaks observed in the (31)P magic-angle spinning spectrum of OCPS. On the basis of our experimental data, the molecular formula of OCPS is determined to be Ca(7.81)(HPO(4))(1.82)(PO(4))(3.

The effect of complexing phosphoproteins to decalcified collagen on in vitro calcification.

Decalcified samples of chicken bone containing phosphoproteins of varying concentrations were used to assess the effect of phosphoproteins and of protein-bound Ser(P) and Thr(P) in the in vitro nucleation of a Ca-P solid phase from metastable solutions of Ca and P. Phosphoproteins of bone as well as the phosphoproteins from egg yolk (phosvitin) were used. Increasing concentrations of phosphoprotein [as measured by the amount of protein bound Ser(P) and Thr(P)] in the decalcified bone particles significantly reduced the time required for nucleation to occur after exposure to metastable solution

A turn-on chemiluminescent assay for alkaline phosphatase using two-dimensional Fe-centered metal-organic frameworks as the signaling probe.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an essential enzyme involved in cell phosphorus metabolism. Developing sensitive and accurate ALP quantitative assays is significant. In this study, a turn-on chemiluminescence (CL) analysis platform for the detection of ALP activity in human serum was established based on two-dimensional (2D) Fe-centered metal-organic frameworks with 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylic acid as ligands (denoted as 2D Fe-BTC). The 2D Fe-BTC as the signaling probe reacts with ascorbic acid forming reduced Fe-BTC which catalyzes the luminol CL reaction producing a strong CL signal. The 2D Fe

The nutraceutical response of two globe artichoke cultivars to contrasting NPK fertilizer regimes.

Globe artichoke contributes to the healthiness of the Mediterranean diet, but its nutraceutical value in response to its agronomy has not been investigated in any detail to date. Here, the effect of two contrasting fertilizer regimes (one balanced and the other excessive) on the sugar, ascorbic acid and total polyphenol content, the polyphenol profile and the antioxidant activity of the two cultivars 'Apollo' and 'Tema 2000' were monitored in plants grown in three locations in Sicily ('Landolina', 'Iannarello' and 'Zotto'), which contrasted for soil type. The balanced fertilizer regime favored

Effect of sodium phytate supplementation on fat digestion and cholesterol metabolism in female rats.

The effects of sodium phytate supplementation on fat digestion and cholesterol metabolism were investigated in female rats. On the basis of an in vitro experiment showing that phytate raised the solubility of bile acids, it was predicted that phytate feeding would depress faecal bile acid excretion, raise apparent fat digestibility and elevate serum cholesterol concentrations. The experimental diets with or without sodium phytate were either cholesterol-free or cholesterol-rich and had a normal calcium concentration. Rats fed on the cholesterol-rich diet with sodium phytate showed enhanced fae

Determination of meningococcal polysaccharides by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Meningococcal polysaccharides are medically important molecules and are the active components of vaccines against Neisseria meningiditis serogroups A, C, W135, and Y. This study demonstrates that free solution capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) using simple phosphate/borate separation buffers is capable of separating intact, native polysaccharides from these four serogroups. Separation appeared to be robust with respect to variations in test conditions and behaved in expected ways with respect to changes in temperature, ionic strength, and addition of an organic modifier. Serogroups W135 and

Proton NMR spectroscopy of the phospholipids in human uterine smooth muscle and placenta.

The parameters regulating the fluidity of myometrial and placental phospholipids include double bonds, fatty acid chain lenght and the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio. The transformation of these parameters was studied during pregnancy and labor. Myometrial and placental tissue samples were collected from 24 patients: 6 were nonpregnant, 6 early-pregnant, 6 late-pregnant not in labor and 6 in labor. After butanol extraction, tissue cholesterol and lipid phosphorus were determined. Proton NMR spectroscopy of the phospholipids was performed at 500 MHz. The myometrial cholesterol/phospholipid rati

Visible-Light-Induced Phosphonium Salt Catalysis for Site-Selective Aromatic C-H Halogenation and Chalcogenation.

A visible-light-induced phosphonium salt catalyzed approach to site-selective aromatic C-H halogenation and chalcogenation of arenes and heteroarenes is described. In this system, readily available phosphorus catalysts interact in situ with commercial halogenating and chalcogenating reagents to generate photoactive phosphonium salt species, which upon visible-light irradiation enable direct aromatic C-H chlorination, bromination, iodination, thiocyanation, selenocyanation, and trifluoromethylthiolation under mild conditions. The method avoids transition-metal participation and shows good site

Metabolic aspects of bone resorption in calcium-deficient lactating rats.

Lactating female rats were fed diets containing 1.0, 0.1, or 0.04% Ca for 21 days. Fat-free dry weight, ash weight, calcium and phosphorus content of the humerus, plasma calcium levels, and bone acid and alkaline phosphatase activities were compared to those of nonlactating rats fed the same diets. Bone, plasma, and urinary cAMP levels were also studied. Dietary calcium deficiency and/or lactation caused significant loss of bone mass from experimental animals. Urinary cAMP levels reflecting increased parathyroid activity were elevated by the stresses of lactation and calcium deficiency over th

A full-active phosphorus dendron-based nanomedicine alleviates ischemic stroke through multi-target immunomodulation and neuroprotection.

Designing nanomedicines with full-active components to overcome the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and achieve multi-target immunomodulation and neuroprotection for effective ischemic stroke (IS) treatment still remains a great challenge. Herein, we developed bioactive per se hydroxyl-terminated phosphorus dendron (C17G1-OH) micelles to co-deliver fibronectin (FN), an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative protein drug and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotection drug. The constructed DHA@C17G1-OH/FN micelles with a mean size of 254.5 nm are cytocompatible, exhibit desired

Straw return enhances soil phosphorus availability and resupply potential: A global meta-analysis.

Straw return is widely used to recycle crop residues and improve soil phosphorus (P) availability. However, its effects on microbial biomass P (MBP), phosphatase activity, and P fractions have rarely been integrated across studies, limiting the interpretation of available P (AP) responses in relation to P resupply and fertilizer management. Here, we compiled 177 studies with 4438 paired observations and used meta-analysis and machine-learning approaches to quantify soil P responses to straw return and identify their main predictors. Straw return only modestly increased soil total P (TP) by 5.5

Characterization of periodic inoculation with Talaromyces affecting the bioavailability of rhizosphere lead in soil-Houttuynia cordata.

Periodic inoculation of the phosphate solubilizing fungus Talaromyces enhanced soil lead (Pb) immobilization and the growth of Houttuynia cordata. Four treatments were established: a control treatment, a single inoculation treatment, a treatment inoculated every 10 days, and a treatment inoculated every 20 days. The results demonstrated that, Talaromyces inoculation decreased soil pH and increased available phosphorus (AP) content by 15.4-24.4 mg/kg via the solubilization of insoluble-P, with periodic inoculation further enhancing phosphorus release. Additionally, periodic inoculation further

Evaluation of ecological impacts with ferrous iron addition in constructed wetland under perfluorooctanoic acid stress.

In this study, ferrous ion (Fe(II)) had the potential to promote ecological functions in constructed wetlands (CWs) under perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) stress. Concretely, Fe(II) at 30 mg/L and 20-30 mg/L even led to 11.37% increase of urease and 93.15-243.61% increase of nitrite oxidoreductase respectively compared to the control. Fe(II) promotion was also observed on Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira, Azospira, and Zoogloea by 1.00-6.50 folds, which might result from higher expression of nitrogen fixation and nitrite redox genes. These findings could be explanation for increase of ammonium removal by

Synthesis and evaluation of an eco-friendly and durable flame-retardant cotton fabrics based on a high-phosphorous-content.

Cotton fabrics are extremely flammable. Therefore, ammonium salt of dipentaerythritol hexaphosphoric acid (ADPHPA), a novel reactive phosphorus flame retardant without halogen and formaldehyde, was synthesized by solvent-free synthesis method. Surface chemical graft modification was chosen to introduce flame retardant, imparting its flame retardancy and washability. SEM indicated that ADPHPA entered the interior of cotton fiber, which was grafted with OH of control cotton fabrics (CCF) by forming POC covalent bonds to obtain treated cotton fabrics (TCF). There were no apparent differences in t
