Chromatic disorders in elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) have been reported in several species, but little is known about their true abundance or consequences for survival and fitness. Piebaldism, a form of leucism characterized by partial loss of pigmentation, is among the rarest and least understood chromatic disorders reported in elasmobranchs. We conducted an extensive assessment of published and unpublished cases of piebaldism observed in sharks in the wild. Here, we report the observation of 25 incidences of this condition witnessed in 17 species of sharks from 11 families (Carcharhinidae,

PURPOSE: Ocular albinism is an X-linked recessive genetic disorder that exhibits highly heterogeneous phenotypes involving significant visual deficits and pigmental changes in the eye due to GPR143 variants. The aim of this study is to describe the phenotypic spectra of patients with ocular albinism based on the identification of GRP143 variants in a large Chinese cohort.
METHODS: GPR143 variants were selected from an in-house data set. Potential pathogenic variants were evaluated using multiple bioinformatic analyses and validated by Sanger sequencing. Clinical data of individuals with likel

BACKGROUND: Hyperpigmented skin lesions are a frequent reason for dermatology consultation in darker skin types. Many conditions share similar clinical appearances, making it difficult to distinguish benign from potentially serious disorders on examination alone.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to describe the clinical profile and histopathological patterns of hyperpigmented skin lesions in a South Indian population and to assess clinicopathological correlation across major diagnostic categories.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 82 consecutive patients

Alkaptonuria is a rare inherited metabolic disorder characterized by progressive pigment deposition in connective tissues, leading to early degenerative joint disease and tendon fragility. Although uncommon, its clinical manifestations may closely resemble more prevalent musculoskeletal conditions, often resulting in delayed diagnosis. We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with long-standing, disabling osteoarticular complaints initially attributed to common degenerative disease, but markedly premature for her age. Due to worsening bilateral gonarthrosis, she underwent left total knee art

Following exposure of our eye to very intense illumination, we experience a greatly elevated visual threshold, that takes tens of minutes to return completely to normal. The slowness of this phenomenon of "dark adaptation" has been studied for many decades, yet is still not fully understood. Here we review the biochemical and physical processes involved in eliminating the products of light absorption from the photoreceptor outer segment, in recycling the released retinoid to its original isomeric form as 11-cis retinal, and in regenerating the visual pigment rhodopsin. Then we analyse the time

BACKGROUND: Nevus depigmentosus (ND) is frequently confused with vitiligo. Differential diagnosis can be difficult. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a noninvasive technique for real-time en face imaging of the superficial layers of the skin down to the superficial dermis with cellular level resolution close to conventional histopathology. In this study, we tried to use this new technology to study the features of the distribution of pigment cells of these two hypopigmentation disorders and then concluded the differential features.
METHODS: Sixty vitiligo patients and 62 ND pat…

Rationale: cAMP up-regulates microphthalmia-associated transcription factor subtype M (MITF-M) and tyrosinase (Tyro) in the generation of heavily pigmented melanosomes. Here, we communicate a therapeutic mechanism of hyperpigmented disorder by α-viniferin, an active constituent of Caragana sinica. Methods: We used cAMP-elevated melanocyte cultures or facial hyperpigmented patches for pigmentation assays, and applied immunoprecipitation, immunobloting, RT-PCR or reporter gene for elucidation of the antimelanogenic mechanism. Results:C. sinica or α-viniferin inhibited melanin production in α-mel

Altogether 64 young patients with nonconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (NH) underwent clinico-morphological correlations to establish the nosological essence of pigment metabolism disorders revealed. 32 patients showed up the signs of chronic nonspecific hepatitis, including 7 patients with the signs of chronic aggressive hepatitis. The remainder 15 patients were found to have other inflammatory processes in the liver. Only 10 persons examined (15.6%) were diagnosed to have functional hyperbilirubinemia and 7 (10.9%) to have latent hemolytic anemia. The conclusion is made about the necessity of a

There is considerable evidence supporting a link between abnormalities in zinc and copper metabolism and some disorders of the retinal pigment epithelium. Anatomical studies in highly myopic eyes show important changes in this retinal layer. We measured the blood concentrations of zinc and copper and the urine concentration of copper in different groups of highly myopic patients from Caucasian and African populations, and in highly myopic patients with retinal detachment. In the Caucasian myopic groups, many patients showed high levels of zinc and low levels of copper in serum. In the high myo

Abnormal copper metabolism has been described in some pigmentary retinopathies. Albinism is a manifestation of a metabolic disorder in which lack of pigmentation is a prominent feature and changes in the retinal pigment epithelium are found as well. We examined the blood and urine of two groups of patients, albino and control groups, for copper, zinc and ceruloplasmin in serum and copper excretion in urine. We found in the albino group, elevated values of ceruloplasmin which was highly significant when compared to the control group. The mean copper concentration in serum was found to be high a
