Ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease is a severe, febrile form of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta. The condition may sometimes have a fatal outcome, especially in elderly patients. HIV-associated pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) or PRP type VI designates a new distinctive entity reported in HIV patients. We report 2 cases of a pityriasis rosea-like eruption after the use of the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic medications naproxen, acetaminophen, and a combination of acetylsalicylic acid and codeine phosphate. The role of these drugs in the induction of the eruption was supported by the results of macrophage migration inhibition factor and mast cell degranulation tests performed on the offending drugs.

An open, comparative trial of two brief regimens of itraconazole for pityriasis versicolor was carried out. Twenty-four patients received 100 mg twice a day for five days, and 23 received 100 mg once a day for five days. Patients were enrolled in the study on the basis of the presence of clinical symptoms and positive findings on direct microscopic examination. Forty-five patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris were treated with oral 13-cis-retinoic acid (isotretinoin). There was marked improvement in the degree of erythema, in duration, and scaling noted within 4 weeks. Remission or maintained improvement persisted after stopping therapy in many of the patients. The drug is a significant addition to the therapeutic armamentarium in this difficult-to-treat disease.
