Polyploid plants exhibit enhanced stress resistance and superior adaptability to extreme environments, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we confirm that tetraploid rice exhibits stronger cold tolerance than diploid rice. This improved tolerance is mediated by reduced malondialdehyde accumulation, elevated antioxidant enzyme activity, and epigenetic regulation of genes involved in abscisic acid biosynthesis and signaling. Under cold stress, tetraploid rice induces stress-responsive genes (especially in the abscisic acid pathway) more rapidly and to hi

Heavy-metal ATPase (HMA) is widely involved in the absorption and transport of metal elements, including copper, zinc, and cadmium in plants. Although the characterization of HMA has been conducted in several plants, the research on the HMA gene in Stevia rebaudiana remains limited. In this study, twelve SrHMA genes were identified, encoding stable proteins mostly localized to the plasma membrane and possessing conserved E1-E2_ATPase and hydrolase domains, with one to three N-terminal HMA domains. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into two subfamilies (Zn/Co/Cd/Pb and Cu/Ag P1B-ATPases). T

Abiotic stress resistance in plants is often associated with growth retardation. To address this limitation, stress-inducible promoters can be used to generate plants that exhibit both rapid growth and high stress resistance. RD29A (Response to Desiccation 29A) is a widely used stress-inducible promoter in Arabidopsis thaliana (AtRD29A) that can be activated by multiple factors including NaCl, ABA, and low temperature. Specifically, under cold stress, it is induced through the response to C-repeat/DREB binding factors (CBFs). In this study, we identified five CBF3 homologous genes-BpCBF3e, BpC

Tanshinone accumulation serves as a critical determinant of medicinal value in Salvia miltiorrhiza cultivars. Precise fine-tuning of tanshinone biosynthesis while preserving elite agronomic traits remains a pivotal challenge in molecular breeding. Here, we report, for the first time, the successful application of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated upstream open reading frame (uORF) editing in medicinal plants to enhance the production of specialized metabolites. Five evolutionarily conserved uORFs identified in the 5' leader sequence of the key diterpene synthase gene SmCPS1 were strategically edited to mod

Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to cope with the fluctuating environmental availability of nitrogen. However, potential genes modulating plant responses to nitrate are yet to be characterized. Here, a poplar GATA transcription factor gene PdGNC (GATA nitrate-inducible carbon-metabolism-involved) was found to be strongly induced by low nitrate. Overexpressing PdGNC in poplar clone 717-1B4 (P. tremula × alba) significantly improved nitrate uptake, remobilization, and assimilation with higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and faster growth, particularly under low nitrate conditions. Microbiome management is a promising way to suppress verticillium wilt, a severe disease in Brassica caused by Verticillium longisporum. In order to improve current biocontrol strategies, we compared bacterial Verticillium antagonists in different assays using a hierarchical selection and evaluation scheme, and we integrated outcomes of our previous studies. The result was strongly dependent on the assessment method chosen (in vitro, in vivo, in situ), on the growth conditions of the plants and their genotype. The most promising biocontrol candidate identified was a Brassica endophyte Serratia

Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus are widely distributed tick species in Europe. The main hosts for immature stadia of these ticks are small rodents, mostly the genera Apodemus and Microtus, whereas for adult specimens – wild ungulates. These species of ticks are also found on companion and breeding animals including dairy cows. Researches were conducted in the eastern Poland from 2013 to 2014. During consecutive days bodies of cows grazing on the pasture were surveyed and all ticks were collected. Simultaneously ticks were collected from plants with flagging method. Significant prepo

The environmental impact of livestock is often evaluated separately from the other agricultural activities involved in an integrated system, such as that of the rearing of Piemontese cattle in the area of origin of the breed. The most frequently used assessment methods (e.g. Footprint approaches or a Life Cycle Assessment) are in fact often used, through a product-based approach, to analyse a single productive process, but such methods do not consider the production of agro-ecological services, and they neglect the interactions that characterise complex systems. Moreover, such methods often on

Polyploidization has long been recognized as a driving force in plant adaptation to adverse environments. Chilling injury poses a major challenge to global crop production, and the regulatory hierarchies that govern cold adaptation in polyploid crops are unexplored. Here, we show that tetraploid wucai (Brassica campestris L.) displays greater cold tolerance than its diploid counterpart. Under prolonged cold stress, tetraploid plants displayed enhanced glucosinolate-associated transcriptional and metabolic responses, which may contribute to their improved stress adaptation. At the epigenetic le

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are pivotal in conferring cellular tolerance to abiotic stresses and sustaining plant growth and development. However, systematic functional characterization of the tomato SlLEA_2 gene family remains limited. To elucidate the role of tomato SlLEA_2-26 in abiotic stress responses, this study cloned its full-length cDNA. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that SlLEA_2-26 exhibits predominant expression in flowers and fruits, and is strongly induced by drought, salt, Cu2+, and Pb2+ stresses. Three homozygous Arabidopsis thaliana T3 Sl

BACKGROUND: Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is a potent elicitor of secondary metabolism in plants, but its regulatory role in flavonoid biosynthesis in Scutellaria barbata remains unclear.
METHODS: Here, we performed an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of S. barbata seedlings following exogenous MeJA treatment, combining differential expression and correlation network approaches to identify candidate genes, metabolites, and transcription factors (TFs) associated with flavonoid accumulation.
RESULTS: MeJA treatment significantly promoted the accumulation of multiple flavonoids and

UNLABELLED: Untreated municipal sewage is a potential source of Cd but has been used for irrigating vegetables in many countries in recent years. In growing vegetables and fruits in greenhouses, seedling breeding method is generally used in which the seedlings are transplanted into soils together with their seedling culture. Biochar has been increasingly used to amend soils contaminated by heavy metals, but there are few studies on the effectiveness of different ways of applying the biochar. In this paper, we investigated the efficacy of immobilizing Cd by amending eggplant seedling bed with b

Mosquitoes in the larval stage are attractive targets for pesticides because mosquitoes breed in water, and thus, it is easy to deal with them in this habitat. The use of conventional pesticides in the water sources, however, introduces many risks to people and/or the environment. Natural pesticides, especially those derived from plants, are more promising in this aspect. Aromatic plants and their essential oils are very important sources of many compounds that are used in different respects. Insecticides of botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative to chemical insecticides. Acetone,

Phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated agricultural soils requires suitable germplasm and an improved understanding of the genetic factors underlying Cd accumulation. Here, we evaluated a genetically diverse panel of 165 Brassica juncea accessions and identified BJ20 as a high-Cd-accumulating genotype. Across two years, two sites, and two developmental stages, BJ20 consistently accumulated more Cd than the low-accumulating genotype BJ25. Mean shoot Cd accumulation reached 111.21 μg plant⁻¹ in BJ20, compared with 55.07 μg plant⁻¹ in BJ25. However, BJ20 had a lower root-to-shoot transloca

We fine-mapped QPm.caas-4BL.2 for adult-plant resistance to powdery mildew in an 880-kb physical interval, predicted a candidate gene, identified a favorable haplotype in wheat, and developed a CAPS marker for marker-assisted breeding. Powdery mildew, a globally devastating disease, severely impairs both grain yield and quality in wheat. Identification of powdery mildew resistance genes is essential for marker-assisted selection of disease-resistant wheat cultivars. In the present study, we conducted fine mapping of the QTL QPm.caas-4BL.2 for adult-plant resistance to powdery mildew from the Z

The tradeoff between growth and defense in plants is a core strategy for adaptation, but the mechanisms underlying metabolic flux switching remain incompletely understood. The alpine plant Salix brachista provides an ideal model for studying stress adaptation and metabolic plasticity. Through integrated multi-omics analysis, this study elucidated the transcriptional regulation of phenylpropanoid metabolic flux during the domestication of S. brachista from highland to lowland environments and under chilling stress. Transcriptomic and metabolomic data revealed that plain domestication redirected

Sugar transporter proteins (STPs) play pivotal roles in hexose allocation and plant stress responses. However, systematic characterization of the STP family in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and its involvement in Ralstonia solanacearum resistance remains unclear. In this study, 37 NtSTP genes were identified and classified into six groups, with Group VI being the most conserved and Group V exhibiting dicot-specific expansion. Gene structure and conserved motif analyses revealed that most NtSTP members possess the typical MFS_STP domain, although variations in exon-intron organization and motif c

Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. is an economically and ecologically important aquatic plant, but its growth and productivity are severely constrained by soil salinization and alkalization. AP2/ERF transcription factors are key regulators of plant abiotic stress responses; however, their roles in salt-alkali tolerance in N. nucifera remain largely unclear. In this study, we performed a genome-wide identification and characterization of the AP2/ERF gene family in N. nucifera, followed by phylogenetic, structural, and physicochemical analyses. A total of 101 AP2/ERF genes were identified and classified

Canker disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a severe bacterial infection threatening global kiwifruit production. Psa causes lignin degradation, cell wall rupture, leaf wilting, and canker formation on branches and trunks, often leading to plant death. The plant cell wall serves as a structural barrier against pathogens, with its thickness, composition, and cell density influencing disease resistance. Comparative studies between resistant germplasms Actinidia eriantha "Maohuaxiong" (A. eriantha 'MHX') and Actinidia latifolia "Kuoye" (A. latifolia 'KY') and susceptible
