Fludrocortisone has been a mainstay of therapy for orthostatic hypotension for many years. Clinical experience suggests that there exists a substantial interindividual variation in responsiveness to the drug. The aim of this study was to compare in 60 ASA1 patients, the rheological effects of a 500 ml plasma substitute infusion at induction of general anaesthesia. Vasopressin is a vasoactive hormone secreted from the posterior pituitary. At low concentration its role is in regulating renal water excretion, but at higher concentrations it has a number of extrarenal actions, including effects on blood flow. A sensitive radioimmunoassay for human plasma arginine vasopressin was established. 125I-sAVP (1369mCi/mg) was first produced by the Iodogen method and could be used for up to one month in -25 degrees C storage. Changes in plasma ceruloplasmin levels were studied by enzyme immunoassay in 81 patients with the acute hepatorenal insufficiency syndrome (AHIS). Changed plasma ceruloplasmin concentration was detected in the first days of the disease, this change depending on AHIS severity and unrelated to the disease cause. A lowering of plasma ceruloplasmin level below 0.75 mg/ml is considered to be a poor prognostic sign. Measurement of plasma ceruloplasmin is a test available for clinical laboratories, it is highly sensitive, accurate, and reproducible.

Fifty infants with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis were studied prospectively to evaluate the reliability of plasma chloride estimation in the assessment of the acid-base status on admission and during correction of alkalaemia. Cryptorchidism is common in infants born preterm, yet the mechanism for its occurrence is still debated. In a study of 21 premature babies with cryptorchidism at 18 months post-term and 21 case matched controls, cryptorchid preterm infants failed to show the normal rise in plasma testosterone in the first postnatal week.
