An Unusual Plasma Cell Gingivitis Case Related to Use of Herbal Toothpowder.

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is a rare benign condition of gingiva marked by dense infiltration of plasma cells into the subepithelial gingival tissue. Considered to be a true hypersensitivity reaction, it leads to edematous enlargement of gingiva extending up to the mucogingival junction. Identification and removal of the allergen leads to remission of the lesion. This case describes an unusual case of PCG. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient did not respond well to conventional periodontal therapy. Discontinuation of herbal toothpowder with surgical periodontal therapy led to remis…

Zoon's plasma cell balanitis: a report of two cases treated with pimecrolimus.

UNLABELLED: Initially called (in French) "Balanoposthite chronique circonscrite benigne a plasmocytes", Zoon's plasma cell balanitis is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis affecting the glans and foreskin of uncircumcised men. The different treatment options for this condition often present partial results. Reports have shown therapeutic success using topical tacrolimus. We report the use of pimecrolimus, a homologue of tacrolimus, with good response. Two male patients diagnosed with Zoon's plasma cell balanitis, confirmed by biopsy, were subjected to daily treatment with topical pimecrolimus1%.

[Surgical treatment of unicentric plasma cell histological type Castleman's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Castleman's disease or angiofollicular lymph hyperplasia is a rare disease with two identified clinical forms. Unicentric or localized form is characterized by isolated growth of lymph nodes, most often in mediastinum, and multicentric form is expressed as systemic disease with spread lymphadenopathy, organomegaly and presence of general symptoms of the disease. Histological types are hyalovascular, plasma-cell and transitive (mixed) cell. CASE REPORT: This case report shows a woman, 59 years old, with unicentric form of plasma-cell type of Castleman's disease. Unicentric form i

[Bronchiolitis with IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration in a patient with bronchial asthma].

A 49-year-old-man was admitted to our hospital because of cough, wheezing, and dyspnea. Chest CT showed bilateral bronchocentric nodules and increased bronchial thickness. And he was given a diagnosis of bronchial asthma. However, another small airway disease, such as diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) was also suspected, and surgical lung biopsy was performed. The biopsy specimens showed a prominent peribronchial lymphoplasmacytic and eosinophilic infiltration with IgG4-positive plasma cells. IgG4-positive plasma cells may play a role in the pathogenesis of bronchiolar diseases associated with al…

Systemic mastocytosis in association with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and plasma cell myeloma.

Systemic mastocytosis with associated clonal haematological non-mast cell lineage disease (SM-AHNMD) is a heterogeneous group of mast cell disorders with different clinical, pathologic and underlying molecular characteristics. While myelomonocytic/myeloid neoplasia overwhelmingly predominates the AHNMD component, lymphoproliferative disorders rarely occur as an AHNMD component of SM-AHNMD. Here we report two cases of SM-AHNMD, in which the AHNMD component is chronic lymphocytic leukemia in one case, and concurrent chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as plasma cell myeloma in another case. To

The prolyl-hydroxylase EGLN3 and not EGLN1 is inactivated by methylation in plasma cell neoplasia.

EGLN1 and EGLN3 are members of the egg-laying-defective 9 (EglN) prolyl-hydroxylases which during normoxia catalyse hydroxylation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha, thereby promoting its ubiquitination by a complex containing the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumour suppressor. EGLN3 also has pro-apoptotic activity in some cell types. Analyses of a well-characterised series of cases of plasma cell dyscrasias, including multiple myeloma (MM), Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia (WM) and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) surprisingly demonstrated that the CpG island of

[An undiagnosed plasma cell myeloma. Complication after performing spinal anesthesia].

A male patient developed neurological deficits after an uneventful spinal anesthesia. After 2 months without any improvement an epidural hematoma was presumed. Magnet resonance imaging detected inflammatory tissue and destruction at lumbar levels L2/3. The inflammatory tissue had to be removed via laminectomy. Histology of the excised tissue revealed a plasma cell myeloma that was not diagnosed prior to spinal anesthesia 2 months previously.

Presence of cell-free fetal DNA in plasma of women with ectopic pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: The quantity of cell-free fetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women changes during pregnancy and seems to be different in normal and pathologic pregnancies. We investigated the possible diagnostic applications of the detection and measurement of cell-free fetal DNA by comparing quantities found in women with ectopic (EP) or intrauterine (IUP) pregnancies. METHODS: We collected blood samples from 58 women who had positive pregnancy tests and specific complaints and sonographic findings suggestive of EP and from 45 women with confirmed IUP. We performed quantitative real-time PCR an

Autosomal recessive plasma cell panniculitis with morphea-like clinical manifestation.

Two siblings had hyperpigmented indurations over the inner aspects of both thighs extending to the lower abdomen. Skin biopsy showed plasma cell panniculitis favoring a diagnosis of morphea profundus. Family history of consanguinity was present, but both parents were unaffected. To our knowledge this is the first report of autosomal recessive plasma cell panniculitis with the clinical manifestations of morphea.

Jaw complications associated with bisphosphonate use in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been linked with bisphosphonate use in breast cancer and multiple myeloma patients. We report 17 cases of patients with plasma cell dyscrasia being treated with bisphosphonate who developed osteonecrosis/osteomyelitis of the jaw. Seventeen patients evaluated at our institution between 1998 and 2005 are reported. All were being treated with bisphosphonates for a median of 5 mo prior to the onset of jaw symptoms. Sixteen of the 17 patients are 51 yr or older. None of the patients had been irradiated in the jaw nor had obvious osseous manifestation of multiple myeloma

Plasma cell neoplasms. Review of disease progression and report of a new variant.

Plasma cell neoplasms are generally categorized into four groups; multiple myeloma (MM), solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SPB), plasma cell leukemias, and extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP). A plasmacytoma is defined as any discrete, usually solitary mass of neoplastic plasma cells, either in the bone marrow or in various soft tissue sites. Each manifestation of a plasma cell neoplasm differs in terms of tumor recurrence and progression to MM. A gastric plasmacytoma (GP) is a rare presentation of extramedullary plasmacytoma and has not been previously reported as a site of recurrence for a S…

[Plasma cell leukaemia: a rare variant of multiple myeloma. A case report].

Plasma cell leukaemia is a rare variant of multiple myeloma (2-3%), with an aggressive disease with short survival. It is defined as circulating peripheral blood plasma cells exceeding 2.000/ul and 20% of peripheral blood white cells. We present the case of 32-years-old man with left chest-wall pain, hepatomegaly, righ cervical adenopathy, 8800 leukocytes/ul with 33% of lymphocytes and 40% of plasma cell, 10.8 g/dl of proteins and a monoclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. Bone marrow biopsy showed 40-50 % of intramedullary plasma cell. There was a Ig G-kappa paraproteinemia.

Plasma cell leukemia occurring in a patient with thrombocythemia treated with hydroxyurea and busulphan.

Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is a rare aggressive lymphoproliferative disease with a short median survival and a very poor prognosis. We report the case of a 63-year-old man who developed a PCL after 5 years of chemotherapy with hydroxyurea and busulphan for Essential thrombocythemia (ET). The karyotype showed a deletion of chromosome 7 and the plasma cells cytofluorimetric examination revealed a high expression of Multidrug Resistance related P-glycoprotein (PGP). After the second cycle of VAD chemotherapy the patient had a severe pneumonia and died with refractory PCL. This is a rare example o…

Renal pathologic spectrum in an autopsy series of patients with plasma cell dyscrasia.

CONTEXT: Renal dysfunction in plasma cell dyscrasias is common. It is the second most common cause of death in patients with myeloma. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated 77 sequential autopsies performed on patients dying from complications of plasma cell dyscrasias during an 11-year period at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. These consisted of 15% of all the autopsies performed during this time. DESIGN: The kidneys were evaluated by light microscopy using hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections as well as Congo red and thioflavin T stains when amyloidosis was in the differential diagnosis. I

Chronic plasma cell pneumonia in a patient with long-standing HIV infection.

Chronic bibasilar alveolar infiltrates existed for more than 2 years in a 25-year-old woman infected with HIV for more than a decade. Bronchoscopically, there were copious, purulent secretions that grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Transbronchial biopsy specimens demonstrated plasma cell interstitial pneumonia (PCIP). Focal, transient radiographic improvement occurred after antistaphylococcal antimicrobial therapy. With recurrent and progressive symptoms, sustained clinical and radiographic improvement did not occur until corticosteroid therapy was instituted with tuberc
