We present a case of surgical management of a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) following prolonged intubation. After transverse tracheal division and retraction of the distal stump, direct closure of the esophageal defect and repair of the membranous tracheal defect using a synthetic bioabsorbable patch were performed, followed by interposition of muscle flap between the suture lines and tracheal reconstruction. Large TEFs, without tracheal stenosis or circumferential airway defect, associated with marked peritracheal inflammation, may be treated with this alternative tracheoplastic technique i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Under anticipating free flap volume may lead to deficits in functional and aesthetic outcomes. Alternatively, over anticipating may compromise airway patency, lead to prolonged tracheostomy dependence or poor oral intake, and cause poor cosmetic outcomes. Surgeons face a fine balance in creating a functional reconstruction that accounts adequately for volume changes in the future.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies are elucidating the complex and multifactorial volume changes of free flaps that are dependent on postoperative radiation, flap composition, weight fluctuations, an

The aim of this study was to compare two kinds of reduction malarplasty in terms of their bony consolidation. Patients that underwent reduction malarplasty were reviewed retrospectively. The medial movement of the zygomatic body and the zygomatic arch as well as the complications and satisfaction of patients were investigated. The surgical procedure entailed a classical or modified L-shaped osteotomy through intraoral and sideburn approaches. Two groups were distinguished, those for whom a mortice and tenon joint was formed on the zygomatic arch (Group I), and those that formed end-to-end bone

PURPOSE: Midface reconstruction poses a complex set of challenges for reconstructive surgeons. The optimal midface reconstruction must possess a durable underlying bone construct capable of integrating dental implants. Facial contour is restored by the overlying microvascular soft tissue reconstruction with reestablishment of the oral cavity. A plethora of microvascular flaps used in clinical practice have been described including those harvested from the iliac crest, scapula, fibula, forearm and back (latissimus dorsi). The objective was to share our experiences with each of these treatment o

Open-mouth deformity after mandibular resection presents a challenge for surgeons and patients, contributing to significant functional and cosmetic morbidity. We present an innovative surgical technique to prevent or correct open-mouth deformity. Tensor fascia lata slings were utilized in combination with maxillomandibular fixation to surgically correct or prevent open-mouth deformity in four patients who had previously undergone mandibulectomy or at the time of a contralateral mandibulectomy following prior hemimandibulectomy and reconstruction. Two patients achieved favorable outcomes, inclu

BACKGROUND: The surgery for facelift or zygoma reduction usually has a long operative time, swelling, and blood loss consideration; and therefore, these two procedures are often performed separately. In recent years, an increasing demand for simultaneous zygoma reduction and facelift has been observed; however, few studies have examined safe and effective of simultaneous zygoma reduction and facelift.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to present a safe, easy, and flexible method for combining facelift and zygoma reduction through single facelift incision with minimal blood loss.
METHODS:

Genioplasty is commonly performed as part of facial feminization surgery. Commonly addressed areas in facial feminization surgery include the chin. According to some authors, 100% of patients request genioplasty surgery in order to feminize their faces. Specific genioplasty techniques (involving generally reduction surgery) applied to transgender patients have been rarely described in the literature. Objective: We aimed to carry out a review of the literature to update the current knowledge on this subject while achieving a comprehensive synthesis of the available surgical techniques for reduc

Many breast conditions that warrant referral to a plastic surgeon may first be identified in a routine gynecologic or primary care setting. These range from asymmetric anomalies and macromastia to sequelae of previous aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. The purpose of this reference article is to provide an overview of common breast deformities and discuss their unique challenges in evaluation.

Injuries to the urethra can be caused by malformations, trauma, inflammation, or carcinoma, and reconstruction of the injured urethra is still a significant challenge in clinical urology. Implanting grafts for urethroplasty and end-to-end anastomosis are typical clinical interventions for urethral injury. However, complications and high recurrence rates remain unsatisfactory. To address this, urethral tissue engineering provides a promising modality for urethral repair. Additionally, developing tailor-made biomimetic natural and synthetic grafts is of great significance for urethral reconstruc

Decompressive craniectomy is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, usually performed after neuropathological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), but also vascular accidents (strokes), erosive tumours, infections and other congenital abnormalities. This procedure is usually followed by the reconstruction of the cranial vault, which is also known as cranioplasty (CP). The gold-standard material for the reconstruction process is the autologous bone of the patient. However, this is not always a feasible option for all patients. Several heterologous materials have been creat

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and summarize the characteristics of different treatment methods in repairing zygomatic defect.
METHODS: A total of 37 patients with zygomatic defect were reviewed in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from August 2012 to August 2019. According to the anatomical scope of defect, the zygomatic defects were divided into four categories: Class 0, the defect did not involve changes in zygomatic structure or continuity, only deficiency in thickness or projection; Class Ⅰ, defect was located in the

OBJECTIVE: Posterior tracheomalacia (TM) is characterized by excessive intraluminal displacement of the tracheal membranous wall. Recently, novel surgical strategies for repair of posterior TM have been introduced. To our knowledge, these strategies have not been evaluated in a model of posterior TM. Thus, we sought to design an ex vivo mechanical model of posterior TM to evaluate potential repair interventions.
METHODS: A model for posterior TM was created with partial thickness longitudinal incisions to the posterior aspect of ex vivo porcine trachea. Three groups of tracheas were tested: (

PURPOSE: This study intended to determine the properties of induced membranes after various periods of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) retention and the effect of different retention intervals on subsequent defect repair.
METHODS: Model of a critical bone defect in rabbits was prepared to obtain the induced membrane. For varying intervals of spacer insertion (2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, and 20 weeks postoperatively), angiogenesis, osteogenesis, and MSC-related properties were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and western-blot. Furthermore, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after PMMA insertion, bone grafting was pe

BACKGROUND: Lateral canthal webbing is a known complication of blepharoplasty, which occurs when the lateral aspect of the upper blepharoplasty incision is taken below the equator of the lateral canthus. Removing excessive eyelid skin laterally can also result in a lateral canthal web. Currently, there is no standard approach for addressing this complication.
METHODS: Retrospective review of single surgeon practice between 2011 and 2019. All patients underwent revision surgery using the proposed single Z-plasty technique.
RESULTS: Twenty-three patients referred for lateral canthal web were i

PURPOSE: Pericardial fat is appropriate tissue to cover the bronchial anastomotic site because its harvesting is minimally invasive. We investigated the changes in pericardial fat tissue around the anastomotic site after pulmonary resection with tracheobronchoplasty.
METHODS: The subjects of this study were 43 lung cancer patients who underwent pulmonary resection with tracheobronchoplasty. We measured the maximum cross-sectional area and average computed tomography (CT) values of the pedicle pericardial fat pad around the anastomotic site 1 week and then 6 months after the operation.
