[Nutrition studies in the mid valley of Senegal. 2. Nutritional health of the population and its trends].

A nutritional survey performed in the Senegal mid valley in 1983 including 610 individuals shows that mild to moderate protein-energy malnutrition, specific deficiencies and anemia are still present. In addition new health hazards such as overweight and perhaps high blood pressure, raise and may burden public health welfare in that area.

The impact of urinary schistosomiasis on the health of two community populations living in endemic areas in Tanzania.

Two populations living in separate areas in Tanzania known to be endemic for S. haematobium were investigated for the effects of the infection on community health. Both populations, each of about 450 examinees, had similar infection prevalences of 54-57% with peaks of 66-67% among the 5 to 19 year olds. Over 90% of the infections from either population were symptomatic showing mostly manifestations of vesical lesions. Radiological examinations of a random sample of 100 infected subjects from the population with the lower infection intensity revealed a high prevalence of 28% for bilateral urete

Effects of sulfur oxides and respirable particles on human health. Methodology and demography of populations in study.

As part of a study of health effects of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, we have established a cohort of adults 25 to 74 yr of age in 6 communities who will be followed prospectively. At the conclusion of our first cycle of measuring the health of adults in 6 sites we found that, although we used different sampling frames, our samples were close to the distribution shown in the U.S. Census for age, sex, and occupation, with the possible exception of one city. Analysis of the cross-sectional data indicated that for both age- and height-adjusted values for forced expiratory volume in 1 s a

Variations in health-related quality of life across sociodemographic groups, health conditions, and modifiable risk factors: a population-based EQ-5D-3L study.

BACKGROUND: EQ-5D is widely used in economic evaluations and population health assessments. This study used a large population-based cohort with EQ-5D-3L data to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of the general population in Stockholm County and investigate potential inequalities and variations in HRQoL. METHODS: This study analysed data from 52,714 respondents aged 23-104 years from the 2021 Stockholm Public Health Cohort (SPHC). Calibration weights were used to address non-response bias and improve representativeness. Differences in mean EQ-VAS and EQ-5D-3L index values we…

Seeking mental health care from private health practitioners among individuals with alcohol dependence/abuse; results from a study in the French general population.

INTRODUCTION: Better knowledge of the factors that have an impact on pathways to mental health care may contribute greatly to organizing optimum health-care delivery. However, surveillance systems concerning alcohol problems in the French general population are suboptimal. The objectives of this study were to investigate: 1) the prevalence of mental health-care seeking in individuals with alcohol abuse/dependence in France, 2) which category of medical practitioner was consulted, and 3) psychological and socio-environmental factors associated with mental health-care seeking. METHODS: A total

Infusing co-design with ADAPT-ITT: adapting interventions with populations experiencing health disparities.

Health disparities refer to preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, and opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by marginalized populations. Addressing these disparities requires more than traditional top-down approaches to interventions. One promising strategy is co-designing interventions directly with communities impacted by inequities. Co-design is a collaborative process where community members and researchers work together to identify needs, develop solutions, and implement tailored interventions to address inequities. However, practical guidance on rigorous

Suicide prevention in primary health care among socially vulnerable populations: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide remains a major public health challenge worldwide, particularly among socially vulnerable populations who experience disproportionate exposure to social determinants associated with suicide risk and barriers to mental healthcare. Primary health care (PHC) is often the first point of contact with healthcare services and therefore plays a critical role in suicide prevention. METHODS: This narrative review was conducted according to the SANRA guidelines. A structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed to identify evidence on suicid

Environmental Scan of Tools and Frameworks Assessing Climate-Related Health Vulnerabilities in Older Populations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Climate change is intensifying health inequities, particularly among older adults who face heightened vulnerability to climate-related hazards. With the global senior population estimated at one billion and projected to increase by 20% by 2050, there is urgent need for health systems to identify and respond to their specific risks. This environmental scan aims to map and evaluate existing tools and frameworks used to assess climate-related health vulnerabilities in older adults, with a focus on informing equitable healthcare planning and system resilience. The Million Hearts Initiative and Cardiovascular Health Equity: A Nursing Call to Action for Priority Populations.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, disproportionately affecting populations affected by structural and social inequities. Million Hearts 2027 aims to advance CVD health equity through targeted policies, processes, and practices that promote equitable access to resources. The initiative prioritizes 5 populations at increased risk: racial and ethnic minority groups, individuals with lower incomes, people living in rural areas or healthcare access deserts, individuals with behavioral health conditions who use tobacco, and pregnant or postp

Measurement invariance of the Pediatric Quality of life index in a child and adolescent mental health population.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the measurement invariance of the Pediatric Quality of Life Index (PedsQL) in a population of children and adolescents participating in mental health treatment. METHODS: We analyzed PedsQL data from three child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) services (walk-in, day hospital, intensive community treatment). We fit ordered-categorical confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to the canonical four-domain model and a theory-refined variant with targeted cross-loadings. We then examined multi-group measurement invariance (configural, metric, scalar) across service strea

Language Barriers as a Driver of Health Disparity in Bone Density Screening Among the Aging Population.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis widely affects the aging population and often leads to debilitating fragility fractures. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans are important for osteoporosis screening and treatment among aging women to prevent fragility fractures; however, disparities exist across populations. This study analyzed these disparities to help reduce screening inequalities to prevent complications of osteoporosis. METHODS: A sample was used from the 2018, 2020, and 2022 U.S. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey of women who responded about screening dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry utiliza

Presence of Dolosigranulum pigrum in the nasopharynx and its relationship with respiratory health status in paediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections range from asymptomatic colonisation to an invasive disease. Recent studies suggest that nasopharyngeal microbiota may influence this variability. Emerging evidence points to Dolosigranulum pigrum, a nasopharyngeal commensal, as a potentially protective bacterium. This study aimed to identify variables associated with the presence of D. pigrum in the nasopharynx of children with varying respiratory health statuses. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal aspirates were collected from children <18 years who were asymptomatic (n = 65), had banal viral infection (n = 48)

Yogurt and human health across history, culture, and science: Lessons for modern aging populations.

Yogurt is an ancient fermented milk product obtained through the action of specific lactic acid bacteria. It gained widespread modern popularity in the early 1900s when it was proposed as the secret to extending lifespan. In the 1950s, however, dairy fats became highly controversial due to its high saturated fat content, which formed the basis of the "diet-heart hypothesis." In recent decades, there has been a global resurgence of scientific and public interest in yogurt due to growing awareness of its distinct health benefits which are largely ascribed to its provision of probiotics and bioac

Dental health as a determinant of operational readiness in military populations: Evidence from Ceuta (Spain).

The Spanish Armed Forces require optimal oral health to ensure operability during international missions. In a cross-sectional study with a sample of 691 military personnel, 17.66% were classified as temporarily unfit (NAT), predominantly among enlisted ranks (21.7%). Employment status and smoking showed significant associations with NAT (P < .000), while gender, age, and alcohol consumption were not significant factors. The decayed, missing filled teeth index, particularly its decayed component, was strongly related to NAT (P = .000). Periodontal disease presence and the need for multiple den
