Interdisciplinary Management of an Infected Dentigerous Cyst Associated with an Impacted Maxillary Canine: A Case Report with a 6-year Follow-up.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, typically associated with impacted teeth, particularly maxillary canines and mandibular third molars. They often remain asymptomatic until they reach a significant size, leading to complications, such as cortical bone expansion, root resorption, and potential infections. The management of dentigerous cysts in pediatric patients requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgical, orthodontic, and prosthetic rehabilitation strategies. Advanced imaging techniques, such as cone-beam computed tomograph

Socioeconomic, access-related, and periodontal factors associated with oral health-related quality of life among pregnant women in primary health care: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease affects not only clinical status but also oral-health–related quality of life (OHRQoL). Socioeconomic context, pregnancy-related systemic changes, hygiene habits, service access/use, and unmet periodontal needs may shape OHRQoL in pregnancy. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify factors associated with worse OHRQoL among pregnant women receiving care in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). METHODS: OHRQoL was assessed using the OHIP-14 questionnaire by standardized interview, and participants were categorized into: moderate/high impact (G1 = 56; OHI

Transient bradycardia during local anaesthesia to the oral cavity under intravenous sedation and its associate factors: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Local anaesthesia in dental procedures is generally safe, although the occurrence of transient bradycardia (TB) has occasionally been reported. TB is often associated with two reflexes, the trigeminal cardiac reflex (TCR) and the vasovagal reflex (VVR) and is characterised by a rapid decrease in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). The prevalence of TCR is considered low, and its predictors have not been thoroughly investigated, although an association with the gag reflex has been suggested in recent years. METHODS: This prospective study assessed TB occurrence during local an

Antimicrobial Peptides Active in In Vitro Models of Endodontic Bacterial Infections Modulate Inflammation in Human Cardiac Fibroblasts.

Endodontic and periodontal disease are conditions of infectious origin that can lead to tooth loss or develop into systemic hyperinflammation, which may be associated with a wide variety of diseases, including cardiovascular. Endodontic and periodontal treatment often relies on antibiotics. Since new antimicrobial resistances are a major threat, the use of standard antibiotics is not recommended when the infection is only local. Antimicrobial peptides were recently demonstrated to be valid alternatives for dental treatments. The antimicrobial peptide M33D is a tetrabranched peptide active agai

Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible: a case series at a single institution.

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) defines exposed irradiated bone, which fails to heal over a period of 3-6 months without evidence of residual or recurrent tumor. In the previous decades, a staging and treatment protocol suggested by Marx, has dominated the approach to ORN. However, recently this paradigm is shifting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our institutional experience in managing ORN through a retrospective review of case series from a large urban academic cancer centre. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted to include all ORN cases from 2003 to 2009 diag

[Custom-made mouthguards and prevention of orofacial injuries in sports].

The importance of sports dentistry has become even greater due to the role that sports have in modern society. As the risk of sports-related injuries appears already in the period of children's play and is constantly present in various risk-related sporting activities, the role of dental profession has become extremely important. Custom-made mouthguards are the most highly recommended mouthguards used for successful prevention of orofacial and dental injuries. It is important to inform athletes of the best characteristics of a custom-made mouthguard such as retention, comfort, fit, ease of spe

The effect of different methods of remuneration on the behaviour of primary care dentists.

BACKGROUND: Methods of remuneration have been linked with the professional behaviour of primary care physicians. In dentistry, this can be exacerbated as clinicians operate their practices as businesses and take the full financial risk of the provision of services. The main methods for remunerating primary care dentists include fee-for-service, fixed salary and capitation payments. The aim of this review was to determine the impact that these remuneration mechanisms have upon primary care dentists' behaviour. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of different methods of remuneration on the leve

The association between parental oral health literacy, socio-demographic characteristic, patient factors and caries status of paediateric cancer patient: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric cancer patients (PCPs) are reported to experience poorer dental health compared to their healthy peers. Contributing factors include low parental oral health literacy (OHL), suboptimal oral health behaviours among PCPs, and various clinical factors. However, there is limited data on the caries status of PCPs in Malaysia, and the relationship between caries status and parental OHL remains unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate PCPs' caries status, assess parental OHL, and identify other factors influencing caries status in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional st

Capnography Should Be Mandatory Monitoring For Moderate Sedation.

Background There has been increasing concern by the American Dental Association, state dental boards, regional legislators, and specialty groups about the current state of dental anesthesia. Specific interest has surrounded methods to improve patient safety during parental sedation and anesthesia. Many times in the history of dental anesthesia, monitoring advances begin in the hospital for general anesthesia, then downscale, become smaller, and find utility in outpatient anesthesia. Monitoring advances ultimately have been shown to improve patient safety and are subsequently universally adopte

Prediction of Sjögren's disease diagnosis using matched electronic dental-health record data.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's disease (SD) is an autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose early due to its wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and overlap with other autoimmune diseases. SD potentially presents through early oral manifestations prior to showing symptoms of clinically significant dry eyes or dry mouth. We examined the feasibility of utilizing a linked electronic dental record (EDR) and electronic health record (EHR) dataset to identify factors that could be used to improve early diagnosis prediction of SD in a matched case-control study population. METHODS: EHR data, including

Evaluation of Cold and Electric Pulp Tests for Assessing the Success of Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block for Mandibular First Molars Diagnosed with Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis.

INTRODUCTION: Fear of dentistry, often due to past painful experiences, is a significant barrier preventing patients from visiting dentists. Achieving effective pain control, especially during root canal treatments, is crucial. However, inferior alveolar nerve blocks (IANBs) have a low success rate, influenced by factors such as anxiety, anatomical variations, and technique limitations, leading to anesthesia failure. Although numerous studies have examined the cold test and electric pulp test (EPT) in assessing the success of local anesthesia, no standardized method has been established. This

The Surface Deterioration of Prefabricated Zirconia Crowns on Exposure to Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride Gel: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Zirconia is a widely used restorative material in dentistry due to its superior aesthetic and mechanical properties. The oral cavity is a complex ecosystem with various components, which affect the teeth, as well as artificial restorative materials. Various personal and professional interventions carried out can severely affect the properties of restorative materials, thus altering the longevity of the prosthesis; 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel is one such professionally applied topical fluoride agent used to prevent caries. The interaction of this APF gel with high

Polyethylenimine-alginate nanocomposites based bone morphogenetic protein 2 gene-activated matrix for alveolar bone regeneration.

The repair and treatment of lost or damaged alveolar bone is of great significance in dentistry. Gene-activated matrix (GAM) technology provides a new way for bone regeneration. It is a local gene delivery system, which can not only recruit cells, but also influence their fate. For this purpose, we fabricated a bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) gene-loaded absorbable gelatin sponge (AGS) and studied its effect on promoting alveolar bone formation and preventing resorption following tooth extraction in rats. In order to obtain better transfection efficiency, polyethylenimine-alginate (PEI-al
