Evaluating the global landscape of suicide helpline services: a global survey across 105 countries.

BACKGROUND: Suicide helpline services (SHSs) are viewed as an essential part of suicide prevention. In the context of increased demand experienced by the services through the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reduced funding, we aimed to evaluate such services to help assess their effectiveness and resilience. METHODS: This multinational cross-sectional survey, conducted from Sept 1, 2022, to Feb 28, 2023, evaluated SHSs in 150 countries. Local collaborators created an SHS directory, and a 42-question questionnaire was distributed via Survey Monkey through Find A Helpline and local collaborators.

Low Rates of Preventive Healthcare Service Utilization Among Adolescents and Adults With Down Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: People with Down syndrome have health risks that require specific lifelong preventive health care. With increasing life expectancy, people with Down syndrome also face health conditions typical of their unaffected peers and thus need coordinated health care. The purpose of this study is to describe rates of age/sex- and Down syndrome-specific preventive healthcare activities among adolescents and adults with Down syndrome. METHODS: Using Medicaid claims (2006-2010) in California, Colorado, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, the cohort was defined as people with Down syndrome aged ≥12 y

A Nearly 50% Decrease in New HIV Diagnoses in Rhode Island from 2006-2016: Implications for Policy Development and Prevention.

In the last decade, reductions in HIV incidence have been observed across the United States. However, HIV continues to disproportionately impact gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In Rhode Island, rates of HIV diagnoses have decreased by 44% across all groups over the last decade. This success has been the result of close collaboration across multiple sectors. Different prevention approaches, including syringe exchange programs, community-based HIV testing, condom distribution, HIV care and treatment, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have all contributed to the declin

Prevention of HIV infection in developing countries.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread rapidly in developing countries. Heterosexual transmission accounts for almost three-quarters of infections. Current strategies have been effective in the prevention of HIV spread within certain groups but they have had limited impact on the general spread of the epidemic. There is a need to complement these strategies with approaches that will influence the social and environmental determinants of risk to enable those vulnerable to infection to protect themselves.

The effectiveness of group-based comprehensive risk-reduction and abstinence education interventions to prevent or reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus, and sexually transmitted infections: two systematic reviews for the Guide to Community Preventive Services.

CONTEXT: Adolescent pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are major public health problems in the U.S. Implementing group-based interventions that address the sexual behavior of adolescents may reduce the incidence of pregnancy, HIV, and other STIs in this group. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Methods for conducting systematic reviews from the Guide to Community Preventive Services were used to synthesize scientific evidence on the effectiveness of two strategies for group-based behavioral interventions for adolescents: (1) comprehensive risk reduction and (2) abstinence edu

Racial/Ethnic and social class differences in preventive care practices among persons with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Persons with diabetes are at increased risk for serious complications including CVD, stroke, retinopathy, amputation, and nephropathy. Minorities have the highest incidence and prevalence of diabetes and related complications compared to other racial groups. Preventive care practices such as smoking cessation, eye examinations, feet examinations, and yearly checkups can prevent or delay the incidence and progression of diabetes related complications. The purpose of this study was to examine racial/ethnic differences

Strengthening reproductive health among female workers through the Gerakan Pekerja Perempuan Sehat Produktif program: Application of the continuous health examination network model in Indonesia.

The expansion of women in employment warrants more focus on reproductive health and occupational well-being. In Indonesia, the Gerakan Pekerja Perempuan Sehat Produktif (GP2SP) program has been developed to promote the health of female workers. However, the implementation of the program is still limited due to the absence of an integrated operational structure. This research is intended to create a Continuous Health Examination Network (CHEN) model in an effort to improve women's reproductive health by revitalising the GP2SP program. While traditional workplace interventions focus on episodic

Provider perceptions on HIV risk and prevention services within permanent supportive housing.

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an evidence-based solution to homelessness for persons experiencing chronic or long-term homelessness and one or more physical or behavioral health problems. Health services through PSH typically focus on physical and behavioral health. With the exception of programs specifically designed for persons living with HIV/AIDS, little attention has focused on services through PSH to prevent transmission of HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yet sexual risk behavior continues after homeless persons move into PSH. The purpose of this study was to

Psychosocial screening and interventions in congenital heart surgery: optimising patient and family outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Integrating psychosocial health services into paediatric surgical specialty care is essential for addressing behavioural and psychological aspects of illness and reducing healthcare disparities. This is crucial for patients facing CHD, who are at higher risk for depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which is significantly influenced by their caregivers' mental well-being. METHODS: The Pediatric Psychosocial Preventative Health Model framework was utilised by a psychosocial team to assess biopsychosocial needs in CHD patients during their first cardiac

Factors associated with referrals to high security forensic services among people with severe mental illness and receiving inpatient care in prison.

BACKGROUND: Prison mental health care is a significant topic which has been already studied and described in literature, particularly because of important implications both in the prison and in the health care system. It's not uncommon that inmates suffering from mental disorders are referred to high security forensic services (HSFS) but, to date, studies assessing factors associated with relevant referrals to these services are missing. So, the aim of our study is to investigate socio-demographic, criminological, psychopathological and toxicological variables among those who were referred to

Adolescent Health in the Post-Pandemic Era: Evolving Stressors, Interventions, and Prevention Strategies amid Rising Depression and Suicidality.

Prior to COVID-19, there were already increasing rates of youth with mental health concerns, including an increase in youth presenting to medical emergency departments (EDs) with mental health chief complaints and limited access to treatment. This trend worsened during the pandemic, and rates of youth presenting to medical EDs with suicidal ideation and self-harm increased 50% from 2019 to 2022. This resulted in a "boarding" crisis, in part, due to a lack of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization beds, and many youth were left without access to adequate treatment. Additional study of innovation

Syphilis testing performance in Aboriginal primary health care: exploring impact of continuous quality improvement over time.

Data from 110 primary healthcare clinics participating in two or more continuous quality improvement (CQI) cycles in preventive care, which included syphilis testing performance (STP) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged between 15 and 54 years, were used to examine whether the number of audit cycles including syphilis testing was associated over time with STP improvement at clinic level in this specific measure of public health importance. The number of cycles per clinic ranged from two to nine (mode 3). As shown by medical record audit at entry to CQI, only 42 (38%) clinics

Practice-Based Evidence in Community Guide Systematic Reviews.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relative contributions and quality of practice-based evidence (PBE) and research-based evidence (RBE) in The Guide to Community Preventive Services (The Community Guide). METHODS: We developed operational definitions for PBE and RBE in which the main distinguishing feature was whether allocation of participants to intervention and comparison conditions was under the control of researchers (RBE) or not (PBE). We conceptualized a continuum between RBE and PBE. We then categorized 3656 studies in 202 reviews completed since The Community Guide began in 1996. RESULTS: F

Efficacy of breastfeeding support provided by trained clinicians during an early, routine, preventive visit: a prospective, randomized, open trial of 226 mother-infant pairs.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing evidence of the benefits of prolonged breastfeeding for mother and infant health, the rate of breastfeeding at infant age of 6 months remains below the Healthy People 2010 goal. The greatest decrease in the breastfeeding rate occurs during the first 4 postpartum weeks. Mothers who discontinue breastfeeding early are more likely to report lack of confidence in their ability to breastfeed, problems with the infant latching or suckling, and lack of individualized encouragement from their clinicians in the early postdischarge period. Observational studies suggest that p

Infant and preschool immunization delivery in Alberta and Ontario: a partial cost-minimization analysis.

This paper is a partial cost-minimization analysis of preschool immunization delivery in Alberta and Ontario. Public health nurses deliver such immunization in Alberta while in Ontario it is usually provided by private physicians. In constant 1986 dollars, labour costs were 2.9 times higher in Ontario than in Alberta. Alberta and Ontario achieved equal success in preventing diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis in the target population of zero to four years of age. Ontario's pertussis rates were higher than Alberta's from 1980 to 1986 inclusive (p less than 0.01). Rubella rates were higher in
