Analysis of printing temperature effect on texture modification: Potential of soy protein isolate-based bigel for swallowing-friendly food.

This work prepared the soy protein isolate (SPI)-beeswax-based bigel loaded with β-carotene, and the effect of printing temperature (PT) on texture regulation was investigated. During printing, increasing PT weakened the rheological properties and printability of ink. However, the mechanical strength and deformation resistance at non-linear regions of products were strengthened after printing. The more compact moisture binding state and stronger hardness and gumminess were found as PTs increased. Consequently, cold extrusion (PT at 25 °C) achieved the highest precision, and the product was cla

Modified wheat starch for the development of 3D-printed red propolis gels for dysphagic diets: phenolic content and bioactivities during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.

This study developed functional foods for dysphagic diets using Brazilian Red Propolis, modified starch, and 3D printing technology. The obtained gels were evaluated in relation to their printability, textures suitable for people with dysphagia, propolis phenolic bioaccessibility and bioactive properties. The gels were formulated using native and Dry Heating Treatment (DHT)-modified wheat starches (2 and 4 h), at 4-10 % concentrations, with propolis (4 %). Lower starch concentrations (≤6 %) led to agglomerates hindering 3D printing, while higher starch concentrations (8-10 %) produced homogene

Photosynthetic Biomanufacturing in Mechanically Robust, 3D Printed Hydrogels.

Engineered living materials (ELMs) integrate synthetic polymers with engineered cells to create systems that sense, respond, and adapt to their environment. While promising as sustainable alternatives to traditional materials, ELMs remain underexplored for use with photoautotrophic organisms. In this study, we evaluate the viability of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942, which converts carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals using light energy, in three hydrogel matrices previously shown to support heterotrophic cells. S. elongatus remained viable and metabolically active only

3D-printable emulsion gels structured via depletion attraction from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii biomass.

Depletion attraction, driven by interactions between colloidal particles and non-adsorbing macromolecules, offers a simple and effective route for fabricating emulsion gels with desirable viscoelasticity and shear-thinning behavior essential for extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) food printing. In this study, we propose a facile, additive-free strategy to construct emulsion gels by leveraging the intrinsic depletion effects derived from the biomolecular components of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii) biomass. By adjusting the oil-to-water phase ratio, self-supporting Pickering-typ

Integration of rhodamine-based compounds into 3D-Printed structures for selective formaldehyde detection and food spoilage monitoring.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a widely used yet highly toxic volatile organic compound that poses significant health hazards, necessitating the development of rapid, sensitive, and selective detection platforms. Here, we report a novel colorimetric sensor that integrates a rhodamine-based compound (RhB-HZ) into 3D printed structures for the visual and optical detection of FA. A spirolactam-structured rhodamine derivative was synthesized and embedded within a photocurable PEGDA/HEMA resin, allowing direct fabrication of sensor discs and optical probes using digital light processing 3D printing. Customizing fracture properties of pea-based snacks using 3D printing by varying composition and processing parameters.

Customized textures can be achieved using extrusion-based 3D food printing by varying composition and processing parameters, e.g., printing designs and post-processing conditions. This study aims to design textural properties of customized pea-based snacks by investigating the effects of composition and multiple processing parameters on fracture behavior. Macronutrient composition of printing materials (i.e. starch-to-protein ratio), geometric design, and post-processing conditions (i.e. steaming or baking time) were systematically varied. The fracture behavior of freshly printed and post proc

Design, fabrication and comprehensive testing of biodegradable 3D printable hybrid polymer airway splints.

The trachea plays a critical role in respiration and airway protection but is susceptible to damage from pathological conditions such as stenosis, fistula, obstruction, and malacia. While existing treatment options are useful, they often have limitations, driving the need for innovative alternatives. This study introduces a novel approach using 3D printing technology to create hybrid degradable tracheal splints made of pectin-g-polycaprolactone (pec-g-PCL). We synthesized and characterized various compositions of pec-g-PCL to assess their physicochemical properties and tested their suitability

BACKGROUND: A 3D-printing technology using polycaprolactone (PCL) has shown promise for the development of patient-customized tracheal constructs. However, no studies have compared the mechanical properties of various grades of PCL using animal experiments under the same conditions. In this study, the mechanical properties and tissue reconstruction abilities of research-grade (RG) and medical-grade (MG) PCL scaffolds were compared in rabbit tracheal defect models. METHOD: Customized scaffolds for the rabbit's segmental defect was manufactured using an extrusion-based 3D printing system and tw

Addressing the barriers to peritoneal dialysis-Visual appeal matters.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an effective renal replacement strategy for patients with end-stage renal disease utilizing the peritoneum as the filter and PD catheter as access. A survey of PD patients showed that some felt uncomfortable with the length of current catheters and would be interested to explore newer, shorter designs. We redesigned the transfer set and external portion of the catheter, addressing this barrier as a part of our multi-institutional design project led by a nephrologist from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and an engineering design team from the b

Rheological Characterization and 3D Fabrication of Artificial Bacterial Biofilms.

Biofilms are significantly involved in the progression of many diseases, such as cancer and upper respiratory infections, due to their ability to adhere to soft tissues. Factors influencing biofilm development have been extensively studied on planar substrates; however, there is limited understanding regarding biofilm growth and interactions within 3D matrices. Developing biofilm models that closely mimic natural bacterial communities' chemical and mechanical properties in soft tissues is essential for developing next-generation antibacterial compounds and therapeutics, as 3D biofilms are more

A realistic aneurysm clipping simulation combining 3D-printed and placenta-based models-how I do it.

INTRODUCTION: Neurovascular surgery, particularly aneurysm clipping, is a critical skill for aspiring neurosurgeons. However, hands-on training opportunities are limited, especially with the growing popularity of endovascular techniques. To address this challenge, we present a novel neurovascular surgical training station that combines synthetic 3D-printed models with placental vascular structures to create a semi-realistic surgical field. METHODS: Our model consists of three components: a 3D-printed skull replica with anatomical landmarks, a malleable silicone parenchyma with a Sylvian fissu

Multiscale embedded printing of engineered human tissue and organ equivalents.

Creating tissue and organ equivalents with intricate architectures and multiscale functional feature sizes is the first step toward the reconstruction of transplantable human tissues and organs. Existing embedded ink writing approaches are limited by achievable feature sizes ranging from hundreds of microns to tens of millimeters, which hinders their ability to accurately duplicate structures found in various human tissues and organs. In this study, a multiscale embedded printing (MSEP) strategy is developed, in which a stimuli-responsive yield-stress fluid is applied to facilitate the printin

Open-source, 3D printable IOL holder for detailed, smartphone-based anterior segment photography.

Smartphones are increasingly relevant resources in medical practice as they are ubiquitous and reasonably cheap. Among the advantages of using smartphones in medical practise, there is the possibility of obtaining reproducible photographic documentation of various conditions. This is particularly true in the ophthalmic field, where anterior segment color photography plays a significant role in the diagnosis and the management of ocular surface diseases. Here we propose an original design for an open-source smartphone accessory for taking and sharing high-definition photographs of the anterior

3D Printing Cervical Implant Scaffolds Incorporated with Drug-Loaded Carboxylated Chitosan Microspheres for Long-Term Anti-HPV Protein Delivery.

As attempting personalized medicine, 3D-printed tissue engineering scaffolds are employed to combine with therapeutic proteins/peptides especially in the clinical treatment of infectious diseases, genetic diseases, and cancers. However, current drug-loading methods, such as immersion and encapsulation, usually lead to the burst release of the drugs. To address these issues, we proposed an integrated strategy toward the long-term controlled release of protein. In this study, patient-customized 3D scaffolds incorporated with drug-loaded microspheres were printed to realize the effective delivery

Confined bioprinting and culture in inflatable bioreactor for the sterile bioproduction of tissues and organs.

The future of organ and tissue biofabrication strongly relies on 3D bioprinting technologies. However, maintaining sterility remains a critical issue regardless of the technology used. This challenge becomes even more pronounced when the volume of bioprinted objects approaches organ dimensions. Here, we introduce a novel device called the Flexible Unique Generator Unit (FUGU), which is a unique combination of flexible silicone membranes and solid components made of stainless steel. Alternatively, the solid components can also be made of 3D printed medical-grade polycarbonate. The FUGU is desig

Exploiting light-based 3D-printing for the fabrication of mechanically enhanced, patient-specific aortic grafts.

Despite polyester vascular grafts being routinely used in life-saving aortic aneurysm surgeries, they are less compliant than the healthy, native human aorta. This mismatch in mechanical behaviour has been associated with disruption of haemodynamics contributing to several long-term cardiovascular complications. Moreover, current fabrication approaches mean that opportunities to personalise grafts to the individual anatomical features are limited. Various modifications to graft design have been investigated to overcome such limitations; yet optimal graft functionality remains to be achieved. T
