Exposure to partner violence and child behavior problems: a prospective study controlling for child physical abuse and neglect, child cognitive ability, socioeconomic status, and life stress.

Previous research suggests an association between partner violence and child behavior problems. However, methodological shortcomings have precluded the formation of directional conclusions. These limitations include failure to control for the effects of child physical abuse and general life stress, employment of nonrepresentative samples from battered women's shelters, and reliance on a single contemporaneous reporter, usually the mother, for information on both independent and dependent measures. This study used prospective, longitudinal data (N = 155) and multiple informants to examine the r

Understanding the developmental trajectory of behavioral problems and subcortical structure morphometry in healthy children at 6 years old and long-term impact of early nutrition: the COGNIS study.

BACKGROUND: Early behavioral problems may influence adult psychopathology, and early-life nutrition plays a critical role in shaping behavioral outcomes during childhood. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether subcortical brain volumetry at age six is associated with early behavioral trajectories and the potential influence of early nutrition on this relationship. METHODS: Data from 82 children participants in the COGNIS study were included in the present analysis. During the first 2 months of life, fifty infants were randomized to one of two formula diets until 18 months of age: a stand

The Mediating Role of Sleep Problems in the Association Between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors in Children Aged 9-12 in the United States.

PURPOSE: Given the association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) among adolescents/adults, and the high prevalence of SITBs in preadolescents, this study aims to identify modifiable preadolescent factors by investigating the sleep problems' mediating role. METHODS: Utilizing data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, ADHD diagnosis at baseline (ages 9-11) and SITBs at 2-year follow-up were assessed using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Sleep problems were measured with the Sleep

Comorbidity of behavioral problems and parental acceptance-rejection in children diagnosed with chest discomfort, palpitations, vasovagal syncope, and underlying heart disease: a multiple case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience chest discomfort, palpitations, vasovagal syncope, and underlying heart disease often present a complex clinical picture. Not only are they dealing with potential cardiac issues, but they may also exhibit behavioral problems that can complicate the diagnostic and treatment process. Moreover, parental acceptance or rejection can significantly influence the child's well-being and medical outcomes in such cases. This study aims to explore the comorbidity of behavioral problems and parental acceptance-rejection in children diagnosed with these cardiac symptoms a

Estimating the Economic Value of Supported Online Parent-Led Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Prevent Child Anxiety Problems: Economic Evaluation of the MYCATS Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood anxiety disorders are common and lead to substantial negative long-term outcomes in various life domains. Although digital interventions for preventing childhood anxiety problems have been increasingly used in the recent decade, there is limited evidence documenting their cost-effectiveness (CE). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the CE of a parent-led online cognitive behavioral therapy with therapist support (OSI+TS) alongside usual school practice (USP), compared to USP alone for children aged 4-7 years at risk of anxiety disorders identified through universal s

The Syndemic Factors of Violence Exposure, Substance Use, and Mental Health Problems: Relationships to Sexual Risk Behaviors in HIV-Negative Young Men Who Have Sex With Men.

OBJECTIVE: A syndemic of violence exposure, substance misuse, and mental health problems (i.e., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder) is associated with increased unprotected anal sex and number of sexual partners in young men who have sex with men (YMSM). However, few studies have examined multiple forms of violence-including childhood abuse, intimate partner violence, and community violence-and identified which factors are significant predictors of HIV risk for YMSM when controlling for all other factors. Accordingly, this study examined the additive and independent influence o

Socioeconomic and Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Recovery from Childhood Behavioral or Conduct Problems: Evidence from a Nationally Representative Sample of 3-17 Years Old US Children.

Our study provides nationally-generalizable evidence on the racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in diagnosis and recovery from childhood behavioral or conduct problems. We pooled data from 4 years (2016-2019) of the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) for 3 to 17 years old US children (N = 114,476). We performed several logistic regression models using complex survey data analysis statistical methodologies to estimate nationally representative and generalizable results in the Stata MP 16 program. About 20.1% of 3-17 years old US children previously diagnosed with behavioral or

Understanding the link between exposure to fine particulate matter and internalizing problem behaviors among children in South Korea: Indirect effects through maternal depression and child abuse.

Exposure to air pollution is known to have detrimental effects on health. Previous studies have also found that exposure to fine particulate matter can cause adverse mental health outcomes. However, the link between exposure to fine particulate matter and children's mental health outcomes remains largely unknown. Thus, this study aimed to understand the mechanisms of the effects of exposure to fine particulate matter on children's mental health outcomes, particularly focusing on internalizing problem behaviors. Using fine particulate data from the Ministry of Environment's Air Korea initiative…

Testosterone replacement therapy to improve secondary sexual characteristics and body composition without adverse behavioral problems in adult male patients with Prader-Willi syndrome: an observational study.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), a complex genetic disorder, arises from suppressed expression of paternally inherited imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-q13. Characteristics include short stature, intellectual disability, behavioral problems, hypogonadism, obesity, and reduced bone and muscle mass. Testosterone replacement (TR) remains controversial due to concerns regarding behavioral problems. To evaluate the effects of TR on secondary sexual characteristics, body composition, and behavior in adult males with PWS, 22 male PWS patients over the age of 16 with behavioral scores of less than grad

The dopamine receptor D4 gene and familial loading interact with perceived parenting in predicting externalizing behavior problems in early adolescence: the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS).

Although externalizing behavior problems show in general a high stability over time, the course of externalizing behavior problems may vary from individual to individual. Our main goal was to investigate the predictive role of parenting on externalizing behavior problems. In addition, we investigated the potential moderating role of gender and genetic risk (operationalized as familial loading of externalizing behavior problems (FLE), and presence or absence of the dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) 7-repeat and 4-repeat allele, respectively). Perceived parenting (rejection, emotional warmth, and over

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in community-based adults with intellectual disabilities: reliability and concurrent validity vis-à-vis the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP).

Reliability and concurrent validity of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01; Rojahn et al., 2001) was examined in a sample of 130 community residing adults with mild to profound intellectual disabilities with high rates of behavior problems and concurrent mental health problems. The BPI-01 and the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP; Bruininks et al., 1986) were administered twice within a mean time interval of 7.8 weeks by 20 trained and experienced staff members. All three BPI-01 subscales had high inter-rater agreement (Self-Injurious Behavior [SIB]: mean ICC=.84; Stereotyped

Behavioural problems and psychiatric symptoms in 5-13 year-old Swedish children-a comparison of parent ratings on the FTF (Five to Fifteen) with the ratings on CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist).

As part of the validation procedure of a new parent questionnaire ("Five to Fifteen" or the FTF) a random sample of 1500 children aged 5-13 years from the Swedish Population Register (SPAR) was approached. The FTF and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were sent to the parents of the children together with questions about background conditions. After two reminders the response rate was 55.6%. The final sample had a mean age of 9.12 years (SD=1.89) and a sex distribution with 55% boys and 45% girls. Analysis of attrition did not support overrepresentation of foreigners/immigrants in the attrit

Prenatal Maternal Alcohol Exposure During the First Trimester of Pregnancy in Relation to Early Learning Ability, Behavioral Problems, and Autistic Traits in Preschool Children With or Without Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure has been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, its effects on developmental outcomes in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain unclear. We examined associations between prenatal alcohol exposure during the first trimester (PAE-FT) and early learning ability, behavioral problems, and severity of autistic traits in preschool-aged children in a large multi-site case-control study, the Study to Explore Early Development. Children were classified as ASD (n = 1237) or population comparison without ASD (POP, n = 1334) after an in-person assessm

Eight-year trajectories of behavior problems and resilience in children exposed to early-life intimate partner violence: The overlapping and distinct effects of individual factors, maternal characteristics, and early intervention.

Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) can have lasting effects on well-being. Children also display resilience following IPV exposure. Yet, little research has prospectively followed changes in both maladaptive and adaptive outcomes in children who experience IPV in early life. The goal of the current study was to investigate how child factors (irritability), trauma history (severity of IPV exposure), maternal factors (mental health, parenting), and early intervention relate to trajectories of behavior problems (internalizing and externalizing problems) and resilience (prosocia

Does the impact of child sexual abuse differ from maltreated but non-sexually abused children? A prospective examination of the impact of child sexual abuse on internalizing and externalizing behavior problems.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) continues to be a significant problem with significant short and long term consequences. However, extant literature is limited by the reliance on retrospective recall of adult samples, single-time assessments, and lack of longitudinal data during the childhood and adolescent years. The purpose of this study was to compare internalizing and externalizing behavior problems of those with a history of sexual abuse to those with a history of maltreatment, but not sexual abuse. We examined whether gender moderated problems over time. Data were drawn from the Longitudinal Stu

Sex-specific associations between prenatal maternal mental health and child behavior problems at age 7: A (multi-center) longitudinal study of socially disadvantaged mother-child dyads.

Mental health issues are highly prevalent in socially disadvantaged populations, impacting both mothers and children. Maternal mental health … child mental health, and also point to potential sex/gender differences in susceptibility to child problem behavior associated with maternal distress. Our findings underscore the need for targeted prenatal mental health interventions, especially within socially disadvantaged populations.
