"Perspectives on financing population-based health care towards Universal Health Coverage among employed individuals in Ghanzi district, Botswana: A qualitative study".

BACKGROUND: Globally, about 150 million people experience catastrophic healthcare expenditure services annually. Among low and middle income countries, out-of-pocket expenditure pushes about 100 million people into poverty annually. In Botswana, 83 % of the general population and 58 % of employed individuals do not have medical aid coverage. Moreover, inequity allocation of financial resources between health services suggests marginalization of population-based health care services (i.e. diseases prevention and health promotion). The purpose of the study is to explore perspectives on employed

Integrating sociocultural theories to inform public health response: unique relationships between moral foundations, cultural cognition worldviews, and COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors.

Key variables from Moral Foundations Theory and the Cultural Theory of Risk were examined in relationship to COVID-19 attitudes and behaviors. Two surveys were conducted with unvaccinated U. S. adults (n = 1,025) that assessed five moral foundations (care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and purity), two dimensions of Cultural Cognition Worldviews (individualism-communitarianism and hierarchy-egalitarianism), COVID-19 vaccination likelihood and related attitudes (including measures of perceived risk, protective behavior, and trust), political orientation, and demographic characteristics. Onchocerciasis in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Survey of knowledge, attitude and perception in Bandundu province.

A community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) for fighting onchocerciasis was started in 2003 in the hyperendemic province of Bandundu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); such initiative was supported by the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC). As the APOC stopped at the end of 2015, there was an urgent need to assess the sustainability of an ivermectin treatment. A cross-sectional survey of knowledge, attitude and perception was conducted to determine the awareness level of local population regarding the disease. A multi-stage random sampling technique allowed the sel

The More the Better? A Comparison of the Information Sources Used by the Public during Two Infectious Disease Outbreaks.

Recent infectious disease outbreaks have resulted in renewed recognition of the importance of risk communication planning and execution to public health control strategies. Key to these efforts is public access to information that is understandable, reliable and meets their needs for informed decision-making on protective health behaviours. Learning from the trends in sources used in previous outbreaks will enable improvements in information access in future outbreaks. Two separate random-digit dialled telephone surveys were conducted in Alberta, Canada, to explore information sources used by

Lessons learned from community engagement regarding phylodynamic research with molecular HIV surveillance data.

INTRODUCTION: The widespread implementation of molecular HIV surveillance (MHS) has resulted in an increased discussion about the ethical, h … efit and potential harm of our analyses and results. RESULTS: Some community concerns about MHS in public health practice also apply to research using MHS data, namely those related to informed consent, inference of transmission directionality and criminalization. Other critiques were specific to our research study and included feedback about the use of phylogenetic an …

Sewage sludge--looking upstream: the precautionary principle.

The health care industry makes a unique contribution to the potential public health and environmental impacts of sewage sludge production and disposal. As materials flow into and out of health care facilities, potentially hazardous substances, like mercury, solvents, and pharmaceutical compounds, are introduced into the waste stream and ultimately into sewage sludge. Although the hazards posed by these practices are often not fully understood or the risks quantified, concern about impacts on public health and the environment is fully justified. How to deal with the uncertainties surrounding th

How is Trauma Exposure Measured in Populations Who Have Experienced Incarceration? A Systematic Scoping Review.

In the last 20 years, researchers have begun building a public health criminology aimed at understanding the far-reaching consequences of having the largest incarcerated population in the world. Of particular concern are the medical and mental health outcomes associated with the elevated levels of trauma exposure experienced by those who spend time in U.S. jails and prisons. A public health approach to both understanding and addressing the complex needs of this population requires, first, defining and measuring these needs. Because mass incarceration is a relatively new phenomenon, there has y

Exploring Interventions to Improve the Oral Health and Related Health Behaviours of Adults Experiencing Severe and Multiple Disadvantage: Protocol for a Qualitative Study with Stakeholders.

The number of individuals in England experiencing homelessness, substance use, and involvement with the criminal justice system is increasing. These issues, referred to as severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD), are often interlinked and co-occur. Health inequalities, particularly poor oral health, persist for those facing these inter-related issues and are closely linked with high levels of substance use, smoking, and poor diet. However, evidence for interventions that can improve these health outcomes for those experiencing these issues is limited. This paper outlines the design of a qualita

Preparing the next generation of health researchers by embedding public and patient engagement into Canadian graduate education: reflections from graduate students.

Public and Patient Engagement (PPE) in health research has become an established practice and is increasingly now an imperative for publicly funded health research grants. Graduate students represent the next generation of health researchers; therefore, it is essential they gain PPE knowledge and skills within academic landscapes that promote collaborative research with those whom research is intended to benefit. By securing theoretical knowledge and practical experience early in their research careers, effective PPE can become well-established in all academic, health research and healthcare d

Psychedelics stores, their regulation and public health: knowledge, perceptions, attitudes and opinions of Canadians.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelic retail stores illegally selling psilocybin, DMT and related substances have proliferated in Canada, with close to 60 brick-and-mortar shops documented in 2023. This echoes the pre-legalization and regulation cannabis landscape. Public responses have remained inconsistent, oscillating between de facto tolerance and enforcement of the law, raising concerns among public health authorities and other stakeholders. How to regulate these stores has become a pressing policy question, yet no research has examined what Canadians know, perceive, and think about the stores and thei
