Unexpected effect of a nitric oxide donor on uterine artery Doppler velocimetry in oligomenorrheic women with polycystic ovaries.

We compared uterine artery vascular responses following administration of the nitric oxide donor glyceryl trinitrate to ten women with oligomenorrhea and ultrasound evidence of polycystic ovaries with those of nine women with a normal menstrual cycle and ultrasonically normal ovaries. Mean arterial blood pressure, pulse rate and uterine artery flow velocity waveforms were recorded before and 60-75 min after glyceryl trinitrate patch application. The pulsatility index and resistance index were calculated to describe changes in impedance to flow in the uterine artery. Peak systolic and time-aver

Cerebral and abdominal arterial hemodynamics in preterm infants with patent ductus arteriosus.

Using Doppler echocardiography we evaluated the effect of ductal shunt flow on the cerebral and abdominal arterial blood flow in 25 preterm infants. Eligible for inclusion in this study were healthy preterm newborn infants. They were divided into two groups based on their gestational age: group A, 33-36 weeks (15 infants) and group B, 28-32 weeks (10 infants). Two-dimensional Doppler echocardiograms were obtained in each infant during the first 8 hours of life and repeated every 6-12 hours until no ductal shunt flow could be detected. Flow in the ductus arteriosus, the basilar artery and the c

Diploic vein as a newly treatable cause of pulsatile tinnitus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is an annoying sound that can be eliminated with targeted treatment of the cause. However, the causes of PT have not been fully elucidated. CASE SUMMARY: A 38-year-old woman with right-sided objective PT underwent preoperative computed tomography arteriography and venography (CTA/V). A 3.8 mm vine diploic vein (DV), which passed through the mastoid air cells posteriorly in a dehiscent canal and was continuous with the transverse-sigmoid sinus, was thought to be the causative finding. Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance (4D flow MR) imaging showed that

Outcome of partial reconstruction of multiple hepatic arteries in pediatric living donor liver transplantation using left liver grafts.

Partial liver grafts used in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) may have multiple hepatic artery (HA) stumps. This study was designed to validate the safety of partial reconstruction of multiple HAs in pediatric LDLT cases. From January 2000 to June 2014, 136 pediatric LDLT recipients were categorized into three groups: single HA group (Group 1, n = 74), multiple HAs with total reconstruction group (Group 2, n = 23), and multiple HAs with partial reconstruction group (Group 3, n = 39). Partial reconstruction was performed only when there was pulsatile back-bleeding after larger HA recon

Spontaneous intra-parotid pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery.

INTRODUCTION: The authors report a case of spontaneous intra-parotid pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery, never previously described in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old woman presented with a palpable, non-pulsatile, 2 cm retromandibular left parotid mass with no triggering factors. This mass was considered to be a mixed tumour, although it did not present the typical features on MRI. At surgery, the lesion in the lower pole of the parotid gland was found to be pulsatile, in favour of pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery. The external carotid artery was ligated to

Detecting Aortic Valve-Induced Abnormal Flow with Seismocardiography and Cardiac MRI.

Cardiac MRI (CMR) techniques offer non-invasive visualizations of cardiac morphology and function. However, imaging can be time-consuming and complex. Seismocardiography (SCG) measures physical vibrations transmitted through the chest from the beating heart and pulsatile blood flow. SCG signals can be acquired quickly and easily, with inexpensive electronics. This study investigates relationships between CMR metrics of function and SCG signal features. Same-day CMR and SCG data were collected from 28 healthy adults and 6 subjects with aortic valve disease history. Correlation testing and stati

Systemic to pulmonary collateral blood flow influences early outcomes following the total cavopulmonary connection.

BACKGROUND: Systemic to pulmonary collaterals (SPCs) represent an additional and unpredictable source of pulmonary blood flow in patients with single ventricle physiology following bidirectional superior cavopulmonary connection (BCPC). Understanding their influence on patient outcomes has been hampered by uncertainty about the optimal method of quantifying SPC flow. OBJECTIVE: To quantify SPC flow by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) prior to total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) in order to identify preoperative risk factors and determine influence on postoperative outcomes. DESIGN: Single

Arterial pressure-blood flow relations during limb elevation in man.

The effect of local arterial hypotension upon blood flow was studied in 13 healthy humans. Blood flow was measured by the local 133Xe washout technique in the calf or foot region. Changes in arterial pressure was achieved by elevation of the leg above heart level, while the subject rested in supine position. In papaverine-infiltrated subcutaneous tissue, local arterial pressure and blood flow was linearly related. In subcutaneous and skeletal muscle tissue with normal vasomotor tone, blood flow remained constant during a decrease in regional arterial pressure of 30 mmHg--autoregulation of bloo

Neurovascular deficits in cocaine abusers.

The nature of the neurological and cerebrovascular deficits in cocaine abusers and whether they persist in abstinence is unclear. Blood flow velocity of the anterior and middle cerebral arteries was measured by transcranial Doppler sonography in cocaine abusers (n = 50) and control subjects (n = 25). Blood flow velocity was measured within 3 days and again after about 28 days after being admitted to an inpatient research ward to determine whether blood flow velocity improved during monitored abstinence conditions. The mean, systolic, and diastolic velocities as well as the pulsatility index in

[Color Doppler flow data of breast tumors].

The recent development of high-quality colour Doppler instruments allows flow detection in small vessels below the resolution of B-mode imaging. Therefore, Doppler is now frequently used for flow detection in tumours. For breast examinations, CW Doppler has been in use for many years, which allows a sufficient definition of diagnostic criteria. Nevertheless, it is surprising that new studies using colour Doppler try to define different diagnostic criteria. To characterise the vascularity of breast lesions by colour Doppler we investigated 127 symptomatic patients. In 54 carcinomas the average

Impedance-Derived Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability from tDCS Output Voltage: Sensorless Physiological Monitoring During Electrical Neuromodulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) devices adjust output voltage to maintain the target current despite varying impedance. Pulsatile blood flow produces beat-synchronous changes in tissue impedance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether impedance-derived heart rate (IHR), heart rate variability (IHRV), and respiration (IDR) can be estimated from tDCS output voltage without additional physiological sensors. METHODS: A custom analog front-end acquires the tDCS output voltage across its full dynamic DC range and superimposed AC fluctuations with high precision. Beats detected

A mathematical framework for the dynamic interaction of pulsatile blood, brain, and cerebrospinal fluid.

BACKGROUND: Shedding light on less-known aspects of intracranial fluid dynamics may be helpful to understand the hydrocephalus mechanism. The present study suggests a mathematical framework based on in vivo inputs to compare the dynamic interaction of pulsatile blood, brain, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between the healthy subject and the hydrocephalus patient. METHOD: The input data for the mathematical formulations was pulsatile blood velocity, which was measured using cine PC-MRI. Tube law was used to transfer the created deformation by blood pulsation in the vessel circumference to the b

The influence of ethanol on blood flow velocity in major cerebral vessels. A prospective and controlled study.

Cerebral vasospasm secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage leads to increased cerebrovascular resistance and may cause ischemia in the affected vascular territories. The currently available therapeutic options for treating vasospasm are limited. The effect of ethanol at a concentration of 0.75 g/kg body weight on blood flow velocity in the major cerebral arteries was studied. In 31 healthy persons, the major extra- and intracranial cerebral vessels were examined by Doppler ultrasonography before and following oral ingestion of 0.75 g/kg body weight of ethanol. An additional 20 healthy subjects se

Postnatal changes of cerebral blood flow velocity in normal term neonates.

Postnatal changes of cerebral blood flow velocity were studied in 43 healthy term neonates using a continuous waveform bidirectional Doppler flowmeter and an ultrasonograph with a pulsed Doppler unit. Pulsatility Index (PI) values of anterior cerebral artery were high within 6 hours after birth, and then decreased in the neonates born by means of both vaginal delivery and caesarean section. These postnatal changes of PI observed with the continuous waveform bidirectional Doppler flowmeter were identical with those with pulsed Doppler technique. The sequential measurement of right radial artery

True Brachial Artery Aneurysm after Arteriovenous Fistula for Hemodialysis - Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial artery aneurysms are relatively uncommon and generally due to infectious, post-traumatic or iatrogenic etiology. They seem to affect 4.5% of arteriovenous fistula. The usual manifestation is an accidental finding of a pulsatile, painless, and asymptomatic mass. Complications include sac thrombosis, thromboembolic ischaemic events, and disruption with profuse bleeding. METHODS: The aim of this study is to present a case of true brachial artery aneurysm in end-stage renal disease patient after arteriovenous fistula creation. RESULTS: Sixty-six-year-old men with a past me

Orbital Doppler evaluation of blood flow velocities in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: There have been conflicting results in relation to impaired ocular hemodynamics in the orbital vessels of patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Clarification of the early signs of retinopathy in diabetic patients is urgently needed. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate orbital blood flow velocities using Doppler and gray-scale sonography in patients with DR, and to compare the results with those of their non-diabetic and diabetic peers without retinopathy. METHODS: Orbital Doppler and gray-scale sonography were performed in 123 patients aged 29-77 who had been divided into 3 groups: non

The hazards of basing acceptance of cadaveric renal allografts on pulsatile perfusion parameters alone.

BACKGROUND: Pulsatile perfusion (PP) is used by some centers to provide information that may aid in the selection of cadaveric renal allografts for transplantation. However, basing organ acceptance on PP parameters alone may lead to the discarding of kidneys from otherwise suitable donors. In this case series, we report the reevaluation and transplantation of kidneys refused by other centers after evaluation with PP. METHODS: Retrospective review of 14 cadaveric kidneys imported for repeat PP at our center after initially poor PP parameters from an outside organ procurement organization resul

Association of Early M2 Pulsatility Index Ratio With Outcomes After Successful Endovascular Thrombectomy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We investigated whether early transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound asymmetry indices could serve as bedside predictors of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and 90-day outcome after successful endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). METHODS: Patients with successful reperfusion (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction [TICI] ≥2b) after M1-segment EVT who underwent bilateral TCD within 8 h post-EVT were included. Ipsilateral-to-contralateral ratios for mean flow velocity (MFV) and pulsatility index (PI) were calculated for M1 (segment of the middle cerebral artery) and M2 (segment o
