Query (Q) fever is a worldwide infectious disease with acute and chronic manifestations caused by Coxiella burnetii. The clinical manifestations are so variable that the disease is often only diagnosed if systematically considered as a differential diagnosis. Here, we present a case of a 39-year-old man who lived in a countryside house, with cattle and sheep in his field, with acute Q fever hepatitis with the typical granulomatous arrangement in the liver biopsy. The diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay in a serum sample and the presence of phase II antibodies. Anti…

Q fever is frequently associated with the development of antiphospholipid antibodies though rarely causes thromboses. A 44-year-old man presented with diarrhea and fevers and was found to have a splenic infarct. Infectious work-up revealed acute Q fever as well as high anticardiolipin antibody titers. He was treated with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine and suffered no further thromboembolic complications. The optimal management of thromboembolic complications is uncertain given the rarity of documented cases. However, the presence of these antibodies has been associated with increased risk …

Q fever is classified as a third-class zoonotic disease that is mainly transmitted to humans through the respiratory system by aerosolization of dust generated in the process of handling livestock infected with Q fever (Coxiella burnetii). A total of 642 patients with Q fever were reported between 2015 and 2021. Until 2017, the incidence was less than 10 per year; however, this increased and peaked at 163 in 2018 and decreased to 50–60 from 2020 to 2021. The incidence per 100,000 population was 1.2 in Chungbuk, 0.6 in Chungnam, and 0.6 in Jeonnam. The number of cases increased from May to July…

Coxiella burnetii is a zoonotic pathogen responsible for the human disease Q fever. While an inactivated whole cell vaccine exists for this disease, its widespread use is precluded by a post vaccination hypersensitivity response. Efforts for the development of an improved Q fever vaccine are intricately connected to the availability of appropriate animal models of human disease. Accordingly, small mammals and non-human primates have been utilized for vaccine-challenge and post vaccination hypersensitivity modeling. Here, we review the animal models historically utilized in Q fever vaccine deve…

We report a case of chronic Q fever presenting with catastrophic bleeding from an infected abdominal aortic aneurysm causing a primary aortoduodenal fistula in an 80-year-old retired farmer. This presentation is rarely reported in literature and only through case reports. Early diagnosis and definitive surgery were critical to a successful outcome. Serological diagnosis of Q fever was initiated on the patient's past exposure to animal reservoirs. Complicating the case was ongoing gastrointestinal bleeding postsurgery, with multiple endoscopies undertaken before a culprit remnant fistula was fo…

BACKGROUND: Q fever is an infection caused by Coxiella burnetii, a zoonotic disease acquired from both wild and domestic animals. Northern rural New South Wales (NSW) communities in Australia have an increased risk of exposure to this organism. Both the acute and chronic phases of the infection are associated with significant morbidity, which is often increased by delayed recognition and treatment. Recent termination of vaccination programs in Australia may increase the risk of infection in these populations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the current knowledge ba…
