Cyanolysis and azidolysis of epoxides by haloalcohol dehalogenase: theoretical study of the reaction mechanism and origins of regioselectivity.

Haloalcohol dehalogenase HheC catalyzes the reversible dehalogenation of vicinal haloalcohols to form epoxides and free halides. In addition, HheC is able to catalyze the irreversible and highly regioselective ring-opening of epoxides with nonhalide nucleophiles, such as CN (-) and N 3 (-). For azidolysis of aromatic epoxides, the regioselectivity observed with HheC is opposite to the regioselectivity of the nonenzymatic epoxide-opening. This, together with a relatively broad substrate specificity, makes HheC a promising tool for biocatalytic applications. We have designed large quantum chemic

Reaction of nitrones with silyl ketene acetals: a DFT study.

Theoretical calculations at the DFT level indicate that the reaction of a nitrone with a silyl ketene acetal proceeds, contrary to previous suggestions, through a classical 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, followed by a silyl group transfer step to give the open-chain product. Introduction of a diffuse basis set is necessary to describe properly nitrones. The influence of a Lewis acid has been studied.

Density functional theory prediction of enhanced photomagnetic properties of nitronyl nitroxide and imino nitroxide diradicals with substituded dihydropyrene couplers.

We predict the photoswitching magnetic properties of four substituted dihydropyrenes from density functional broken-symmetry calculations. The magnetic exchange coupling constants differ up to 9.44 cm(-1). The intramolecular exchange interactions are ferromagnetic in nature. The calculated coupling constants are much larger than those reported earlier for photomagnetic organic molecules.

[Fluorescence spectra and fluorescence quantum yield of sulfosalicylic acid].

Fluorescence spectra and fluorescence quantum yield of sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) have been studied. Under the condition of pH<2, SSA has no fluorescence. With the increase in pH value, fluorescence intensity of SSA increases. In the range of pH 5-10.5, SSA gives a strong and steady fluorescence with a maximum emission wavelength at 402 nm and excitation wavelengths at 212, 238 and 297 nm, respectively. In strong alkaline solutions with pH>13, SSA exists as another fluorescence species with a maximum excitation wavelength at 261 nm and a maximum emission wavelength at 390 nm. The excitation spe

Quantum simulation of alignment dependent differential cross sections in co-propagating molecular beams at cold collision energies.

Cold collisions can be achieved experimentally by co-propagating colliding partners of similar mass within a single molecular beam. This technique, combined with Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage (SARP), makes it possible to measure the angular distributions for different molecular axis alignments of the incoming molecules, thus probing the stereodynamics of the collisions at very low energies. Reproducing SARP experiments is a very stringent test for theory, even though the systems under study involve closed-shell atoms and molecules with very few electrons for which exact quantum scatter

Disorders of human consciousness in the Tri-partite synapses.

Conscious Action Theory extends quantum theory to macroscopic phenomena and suggests physical correlates of consciousness occur at the intersection of external measurement signals and internally generated signals from memories that model the outside world. This physical theory predicts conscious phenomena happen at all scales and differ only by the size and complexity of material organizations involved. At the scale of the human "Brain" consciousness is predicted to happen where the processing loop of activity in the Glial network interfaces with the real world input-output processing loop of …

Imaging the sub-moiré potential using an atomic single electron transistor.

Electrons in solids owe their properties to the periodic potential landscapes they experience. The advent of moiré lattices has revolutionized our ability to engineer such landscapes on nanometre scales, leading to numerous ground-breaking discoveries. Despite this progress, direct imaging of these electrostatic potential landscapes remains elusive. Here we introduce the atomic single electron transistor (SET), a new scanning probe that uses a single atomic defect in a van der Waals material as an ultrasensitive, high-resolution potential sensor. Built on the quantum twisting microscope (QTM)

Vacancy-Mediated Anomalous Emission Characteristics of Size-Confined Semiconducting CoTe2.

Transition-metal tellurides (TMTs) are promising materials for "post-graphene age" nanoelectronics and energy storage applications owing to their industry-standard compatibility, high electron mobility, large spin-orbit coupling (SOC), etc. However, tellurium (Te) having a larger ionic radius (Z = 52) and broader d-bands endows TMTs with semimetallic nature, restricting their application in photonic and optoelectronic domains. In this work, we report the optical properties of the quantum-confined semiconducting phase of cobalt ditelluride (CoTe2) for the first time, exhibiting excellent two-co

Proxy-Based Diagnostics of Quantum Oracle Sketching Robustness for Non-IID Sensor and Telemetry Streams.

Published quantum-streaming theory establishes quantum memory advantages for specific streaming problems; how a correlation-sensitive proxy model behaves under the structured dependence typical of sensor and telemetry streams, however, remains uncharted. We present a proxy-based diagnostic and hypothesis-generation framework for correlation-sensitive streaming analysis. Operational proxies for the refreshing time τ and repetition number r, introduced in this paper, are estimated on five synthetic non-IID regimes (IID, Markov switching, seasonal drift, burst repetition, and long-range dependenc

Quantum-Quantum and Quantum-Quantum-Classical Schemes for Near-Gap Excitations with Projection-Based-Embedded GW-Bethe-Salpeter Equation.

We present quantum-quantum and quantum-quantum-classical schemes based on many-body Green's functions theory in the GW approximation with the Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) employing projection-based-embedding (PbE). Such approaches allow defining active and inactive subsystems of larger, complex molecular systems, with only the smaller active subsystem being explicitly treated by GW-BSE offering significant computational advantages. However, as PbE can modify the single-particle states in the Kohn-Sham (KS) ground state calculation and screening effects from the inactive region are not auto

AM and FM mode-locking dynamics in a semiconductor quantum-dot laser.

This paper describes the progression from free-running to FM and AM mode locking in a semiconductor laser. Experiments on quantum-dot lasers, supported by analyses based on multimode semiclassical laser theory, indicate AM and FM mode locking as two manifestations of the frequency locking phenomenon. Free-running corresponds to unlocked, FM corresponds to partially locked, and AM corresponds to locked dynamical regimes of coupled nonlinear oscillators. Reduction of the microscopic semiclassical laser equations to Adler's equation provides insight by connecting FM behavior to the rich dynamics

New Terpenoids from the Soft Coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum and Their Anti-inflammatory Activities.

A detailed chemical investigation of the Hainan soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum led to the isolation of three new cembrane-type diterpenoids (sartrocheliols F-H), one new aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoid (sartrocheliol I), a new natural cembranoid, and five known structurally related analogues. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, quantum mechanical nuclear magnetic resonance methods, time-dependent density functional theory-electronic circular dichroism calculations, as well as comparison with literature data. A plausible biogenetic pathway connecting

Photochemically and Thermally Generated BN-Doped Borafluorenate Heterocycles via Intramolecular Staudinger-Type Reactions.

A series of BN-incorporated borafluorenate heterocycles, bis(borafluorene-phosphinimine)s (11-15), have been formed via intramolecular Staudinger-type reactions. The reactions were promoted by light or heat using monodentate phosphine-stabilized 9-azido-9-borafluorenes (R3P-BF-N3; 6-10) and involve the release of dinitrogen (N2), migration of phosphine from boron to nitrogen, and oxidation of the phosphorus center (PIII to PV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide mechanistic insight into the formation of these compounds. Compounds 11-15 are blue emissive in the solution and so

Artificial versus natural atoms: the uncanny capability of the many-body Schrödinger equation to produce emergent behavior.

The paper reviews the theoretical and experimental progress achieved in the last 25 years in understanding the novel physics of artificial atoms and molecules as arising from the formation of Wigner molecules (WMs) of localized (to a stronger or lesser extent) fermionic or bosonic particles, which are finite quantum analogs of the more familiar bulk Wigner crystal (WC). The term artificial atoms, as used here, encompasses a broad range of recently fabricated quantum nanodevices and experimental apparatuses consisting of a finite number of mutually repelling confined particles, including two-di

Role of triterpenoid derivatives from Centella asiatica as quantum chemical calculations.

To date, the treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD) has focused on the cholinergic hypothesis, particularly through the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside, and madecassoside, which are triterpenoid derivatives from Centella asiatica, have previously been reported to exhibit the AChE inhibitory activity. This study aimed to investigate their binding modes and to determine efficient computational methods for analyzing their interactions with AChE. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that most of their equilibrated structures remained wi

Machine Learning-Accelerated Path Integral Molecular Dynamics and 13C NMR Simulations Unlock New Insights into Quantum Effects in C60 Fullerene.

A definitive answer to the existence and magnitude of the negative thermal expansion (NTE) and the 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signature in C60 fullerene has been previously demonstrated using quantum-mechanical treatments of thermal rovibrational motion. This approach, while accurate, is computationally expensive, lacks the implementation of dispersion corrections, and is fundamentally limited to systems with well-defined equilibrium geometries and sufficiently strong restoring forces, making it inapplicable to weakly bound van der Waals complexes. Alternative methods, such as ab ini

Quantum Chemical Calculations Using Accelerators: Migrating Matrix Operations to the NVIDIA Kepler GPU and the Intel Xeon Phi.

Increasingly, modern computer systems comprise a multicore general-purpose processor augmented with a number of special purpose devices or accelerators connected via an external interface such as a PCI bus. The NVIDIA Kepler Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) and the Intel Phi are two examples of such accelerators. Accelerators offer peak performances that can be well above those of the host processor. How to exploit this heterogeneous environment for legacy application codes is not, however, straightforward. This paper considers how matrix operations in typical quantum chemical calculations can

Soft Computing Approaches toward Density-Based Analysis of Many-Electron Systems.

In electronic structure theory, the field is poised at an inflection point; density-based formulations such as density functional theory (DFT), conceptual DFT, and their time-dependent extensions provide compact, physically grounded representations of many-electron systems, while soft computing methods (viz., machine learning, deep learning, and related data-driven approaches) offer transformative tools for pattern recognition, model development, and accelerated exploration of chemical space. This perspective articulates a vision for tightly coupling density-based theory with modern soft compu
