Decay and recovery of the acoustic stapedius reflex in humans.

The time course of decay and recovery of ipsilateral and contralateral stapedius reflex responses to 2 000 Hz pure tone stimulation was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects. Reflex responses were found to follow a closely similar time course with respect to both decay and recovery in simultaneous bilateral recordings. The similarity is compatible with the assumption that decay and recovery originate in the afferent auditory system, and not in the muscles. Recovery was 50% complete 250 ms after the end of the stimulus and most subjects had reached their initial amplitude after 1-3 s. The indiv…

Evidence for a pyloro-cholecystic reflex for gallbladder contraction.

We studied the effect of graded antral distension on gallbladder contraction both when gastrin release was promoted (alkaline distension) an … horacic truncal vagotomy. These observations provide evidence for a cholinergic, pyloro-cholecystic reflex for gallbladder contraction that is dependent on intact long vagal pathways. Similar reflex mechanisms have been shown to be initiated by antral distension and to cause pancreatic enzyme secretion (pyloro-pancreatic reflex) or acid secretion from th …

Sacral signal tracing: the electrophysiology of the bulbocavernosus reflex.

We studied 52 men with electrophysiologic testing of the bulbocavernosus reflex to determine reflex latency. The bulbocavernosus reflex was demonstrated to be a segmental polysynaptic reflex with cross-over in the sacral spinal cord. Excellent correlation was obtained between prolonged latency and clinical evidence of neuropathy. The examination may be useful clinically to evaluate patients suspected to have sacral cord lesions or pudendal neuropathy (for example impotence, chronic back pain and lesions of the cauda equina and peripheral nerves).

Effects of the visual modality on acoustic reflex magnitude.

Acoustic reflex magnitude for nine normal hearing subjects was measured with eyes opened and closed under three visual modality conditions: (1) in darkness; (2) in light without the ability to focus; and (3) in light with the ability to focus. Reflex magnitude decreased with eyes open for all three visual modality conditions; however, greater magnitude reduction occurred when the eyes were able to focus. Magnitude reduction for the three visual conditions was: 7% in darkness; 11% without visual focusing; and 20% with visual focusing. Additional data presented suggests reflex magnitude changes …

Negative needle deflection of the acoustic reflex in otosclerotics.

The preoperative audiometric and electroacoustic impedance test results of 24 surgically confirmed otosclerotics are reviewed with special attention given to the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing. Information on the direction of needle deflection during acoustic reflex testing was gathered at 5 or 10 dB above reflex threshold. In 12 of the 24 patients acoustic reflexes were present, and in each case the response included negative needle deflections. The presence or absence of the acoustic reflex seemed to be related to the reported duration of the hearing loss.

Sensitization and habituation of the plantar cushion reflex in cats.

The plantar cushion reflex in cats was examined as a model system in a mammal for the study of the effects of repeated stimulation on neural transmission. Effects of various frequencies and intensities of stimulation were similar to those seen in other reflex systems. For instance, for a fixed number of stimuli, habituation of the plantar cushion reflex was more marked at 10 Hz than at 2.0 Hz, and with 1.0 X threshold stimulation than with 5.0 X threshold stimulation. Sensitization occurred at intermediate intensities and frequencies of stimulation. Dorsal root potentials were studied; changes…

The effect of lung reflexes on the pattern of breathing in cats.

Tidal volume (VT), and inspiratory (tI) AND EXPIRATORY (TE) durations have been measured in anaesthetized cats on stimulation of alveolar type J (nociceptive) and lung irritant receptors by intravenous injections of phenyl diguanide and of histamine acid phosphate respectively. The reflexes were studied during eupnoea, hypercapnic and hypoxic hyperpnoea, during rebreathing from hyperventilation apnoea and at different body temperatures. In all conditions the drugs caused rapid shallow breathing with reduction in VT, tI and tE. The VT/tI relationship for injection of the drugs was different fro…

The role of the stapedius reflex in poststimulatory auditory fatigue.

The human ear is very resistant against noise-induced damage in the low frequency range. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether or not the stapedium reflex is of any importance for this resistance. Subjects with peripheral facial palsy (Bell's palsy) including unilateral stapedius muscle paralysis were exposed to several different levels of narrow band noise centered at 0.5 and 2.0 kHz. Temporary threshold shift (TTS) at 0.75 kHz was significantly higher in the affected than in the nonaffected ear after 0.5 kHz noise at and above 110 dB SPL. After the exposure with 2.0 kHz nar…

Some aspects of upper respiratory tract reflexes.

Respiratory and cardiovascular reflexes have been elicited from receptors in the nose and larynx in the anaesthetized dog. Cigarette smoke in the nose causes reflex apnoea, bradycardia and vasoconstriction, probably due to systemic absorption through the nose. Stimulation of laryngeal nerve also results in reflex apnoea, bradycardia, and limb vasoconstriction. When asphyxia supervenes due to apnoea, stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors occurs which normally cause, as primary effects, hyperpnoea and bradycardia. However, it has been shown that stimulation of the laryngeal receptors in…

[Analysis of unconditioned reflexes in light of the theory of dominance].

After bilateral ablation of prefrontal and premotor areas of the brain in dogs, considerable changes of the "spontaneous" and unconditioned activity occurred: the phenomenon of squeezing through narrow spaces, the reflex of resistance against restriction of movements, the disturbances of sexual reflexes, the feigned aggression, etc. These reflex actions acquire features of the dominant. Seeking for food, when carrying out instrumental conditioned reflexes, also manifests features of the dominant. The pathological dominant is suggested to be a result of disorder in normal interrelationship betw…
