Advanced Optical Wavefront Technologies to Improve Patient Quality of Vision and Meet Clinical Requests.

Adaptive optics (AO) is employed for the continuous measurement and correction of ocular aberrations. Human eye refractive errors (lower-order aberrations such as myopia and astigmatism) are corrected with contact lenses and excimer laser surgery. Under twilight vision conditions, when the pupil of the human eye dilates to 5-7 mm in diameter, higher-order aberrations affect the visual acuity. The combined use of wavefront (WF) technology and AO systems allows the pre-operative evaluation of refractive surgical procedures to compensate for the higher-order optical aberrations of the human eye,

Optical quality of Fresnel-structured hyperopic implantable collamer lenses: A ray-tracing analysis.

To achieve positive refractive power, implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) for hyperopia increase central thickness, which in turn raises the risk of pupil blockage and lens contact in eyes with shallow anterior chambers. Additionally, incorporating a central hole raises concerns about stray light and halo formation due to increased thickness. This study used optical simulation to evaluate the imaging performance of hyperopic ICLs, highlighting the Fresnel structure's potential to reduce thickness while maintaining imaging performance. Optical simulations were performed using Ansys Zemax OpticSt

Technical report: Calculation and interpretation of corneal transference maps.

SIGNIFICANCE: Transference matrices are interesting tools for optical analysis of an eye alongside ray tracing. To explore possible interpretations of the ABCD entries of the transference, this article applies them to the corneal surfaces to find a surprising link to a corneal biomechanics parameter that may help with keratoconus detection. PURPOSE: The transference matrix used in linear optics has four entries, dilation A, disjugacy B, divergence C, and divarication D. Entry C is the negative of the power of the system. However, the remaining three entries are somewhat difficult to relate to

IMI: The Role of Light in Refractive Development and Myopia: Evidence from Animal and Human Studies.

Spending time outdoors is consistently associated with delayed myopia onset in children and has been incorporated into prevention programs. While the underlying mechanisms remain under investigation, substantial evidence supports sunlight exposure as a key contributing factor. This review evaluates the evidence supporting this association. Animal studies demonstrate that light characteristics-such as intensity, chromaticity, and photoperiod-can influence refractive development, often postulated to function through modulation of the dopaminergic system. However, translating these findings to hu

Refractive development II: Modelling normal and myopic eye growth.

PURPOSE: During refractive development, eye growth is controlled by a combination of genetically pre-programmed processes and retinal feedback to minimise the refractive error. This work presents a basic differential model of how this process may take place. METHODS: The description starts from two bi-exponential descriptions of the axial power Pax (or dioptric distance) and total refractive power Peye, the difference between which corresponds with the spherical refractive error S. This description is rewritten as an ordinary differential equation and supplemented by a retinal feedback functi
