Improved kinematics of unrestrained arm raising in C5-C6 tetraplegic subjects after deltoid-to-triceps transfer.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparative study. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether control of upper limb joint synergy during unrestrained arm raising involving shoulder and elbow flexion is modified by deltoid-to-triceps transfer. SETTING: Rehabilitation unit for spinal cord injury patients, France. METHODS: Five C6 subjects with C5-C6 tetraplegia sustained posterior deltoid-to-triceps transfer and were compared to a control group of 11 subjects. Kinematics of shoulder and elbow joints before, 6 month and 1 year after surgery, during straight-arm raising (SAR) in the plane of the scapula and han

The effects of restraint stress on the neuropathogenesis of Theiler's virus infection: I. Acute disease.

Restraint stress was found to have a profound effect on the acute phase of Theiler's virus infection. Increased mortality rates were observed in restrained CBA mice infected with the BeAn strain of Theiler's virus. In addition, restrained mice developed higher CNS viral titers than infected/nonrestrained mice. Thymic atrophy was observed in both infected and uninfected restrained mice. Decreased microgliosis, perivascular cuffing, and astrocytosis were observed in restrained mice compared to nonrestrained infected mice at 7 days postinfection. Restraint-stressed mice also developed decreased n

Intracerebroventricular administration of a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist enhances the cardiovascular responses to brief restraint stress.

Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist 17beta-hydroxy-11beta(4-dimethylamino-phenyl)17alpha-(1-propynyl)estra-4,9dien-3one (RU38486) in conscious rats slowly increased systolic blood pressure as assessed with the indirect tail cuff method. However, direct measurement of blood pressure in freely moving rats did not reveal changes in blood pressure after i.c.v. injection of this antagonist either in the light or in the dark phase. In the present study, the hypothesis is tested that aspects of the tail cuff procedure, involving heat (30 min, 32 d

Further study on the effects of histamine H2 receptor agonist and antagonists on restraint-induced antinociception in mice.

In previous studies, histamine was shown to affect the antinociceptive activity induced by stress in mice. The present work was carried out to further examine the role of histamine in this phenomenon. Restraint for 1 h induced significant antinociceptive activity as assessed by the hot plate test in both male and female mice. The antinociceptive activity was enhanced by prior administration of the histamine H2 receptor agonist dimaprit (6.0 mg/kg s.c.) 15 min before restraint. Furthermore, the induction of antinociceptive activity by restraint was antagonized by prior administration of histami

Effects of C-type natriuretic peptide on pituitary-adrenal activation in rats.

The effects of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system response to different stressors was studied. Various doses of CNP (0.2, 2, 4 microg) were injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle of freely moving rats 30 min before stress and activation of the adrenal was measured by plasma corticosterone. CNP did not affect basal corticosterone secretion in the doses applied, but inhibited in a dose-dependent manner the increase in plasma corticosterone induced by ether stress, electric shock and restraint. CNP exerted a more profound inhibitory effect on the re

The use of clozapine in the treatment of aggressive schizophrenia.

The atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine was introduced to clinical practice in 1972. It is a dibenzodiazepine derivative with, among other known receptor site activities, a relatively high D1/D2 receptor affinity ratio. The serious side effects of bone marrow suppression and agranulocytosis delayed the acceptance of clozapine into common clinical practice but scrupulous application of a monitoring protocol led to adequate protection from these side effects. There is now a broad consensus about the benefits of clozapine which supports the use of clozapine as a first-line treatment of schizoph

Alternative therapies in the treatment or oral self-injurious behavior: a case report.

This paper presents the case of a child with severe mental retardation and a history of oral self-injurious behavior (SIB). While the behavior was refractory to a number of dental interventions, some success was achieved through a combination of behavioral therapy techniques and therapeutic touch (a relaxation technique). Etiologies of SIB are discussed, along with descriptions of alternatives to traditional dental therapy for this difficult problem.

Changes in head-dipping behavior in the hole-board test reflect the anxiogenic and/or anxiolytic state in mice.

The effects of treatment with anxiogenic or anxiolytic agents and exposure to acute restraint stress on emotional behavior in mice were examined using an automatic hole-board apparatus. Changes in the emotional state of mice were evaluated in terms of changes in exploratory activity, i.e., total locomotor activity, numbers and duration of rearing and head-dipping, and latency to the first head-dipping. The typical benzodiazepine anxiolytics diazepam (0.05-0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) and chlordiazepoxide (0.5-4 mg/kg, i.p.) dose-dependently increased the number and duration of head-dips at doses that did

Vasopressin and oxytocin gene expression in the porcine forebrain under basal conditions and following acute stress.

This study, the first using the pig, examined expression of mRNAs for vasopressin (VP), oxytocin (OT), preproenkephalin (PENK) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in the forebrain, and of POMC and prolactin in the pituitary. High basal expression of VP and OT mRNAs was present in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei. In the PVN, VP was found in magnocellular regions whereas OT was also seen in the parvocellular portion; the distribution of VP and OT mRNAs in the SON was as reported in other species. The suprachiasmatic nucleus contained VP mRNA but only OT message was present in t

Involvement of oxytocin in histamine- and stress-induced ACTH and prolactin secretion.

The neurohypophysial peptide oxytocin (OT) is released in response to different stressors and has been suggested as a 'stress hormone'. In addition, we have recently shown that centrally administered histamine (HA), which is a mediator of stress-induced release of ACTH and prolactin (PRL), stimulates OT secretion. The aim of the present investigation was to further characterize the HA-induced OT secretion with respect to the type of postsynaptic receptor involved and to investigate the possible role of OT in HA- and stress-induced ACTH and PRL secretion. We studied (1) the effect of HA, HA ago

Effects of prenatal stress and ethanol on cerebellar fiber tract maturation in B6D2F2 mice: an image analysis study.

Two studies were carried out to evaluate the role of prenatal stress in the outcome of prenatal ethanol exposure on central nervous system maturation in offspring. B6D2F1 mice were paid-fed liquid diets containing either 25% ethanol-derived calories or an isocaloric amount of maltose-dextrin on days 12 to 17 of gestation. During this period, half of the dams in each dietary condition also underwent two daily one-hour periods of restraint stress. A fifth group, provided with lab chow and water ad lib, was left undisturbed throughout pregnancy. At birth, all pups were fostered to untreated dams.

Butorphanol as a dental premedication in the mentally retarded.

Seventy institutionalized severely and profoundly retarded patients were administered intramuscular butorphanol, 1.0 to 4.0 mg, for premedication prior to dental procedures. These patients had been refractory to previous combined chloral hydrate and diphenhydramine treatment. Clinical efficacy was categorized according to the extent that adjunctive restraints were required to accomplish the dental procedure. A total of 151 butorphanol trials were recorded. Butorphanol was observed to be clinically effective in 74.8% of the administrations and sedation was observed in 28.2% of the trials. Dosag

Effects of chronic stress on pituitary hormone release induced by combined hemi-extirpation of the thyroid, adrenal and ovary in rats.

Morphologic and hormonal changes, induced by combined ablation of a thyroid lobe, one adrenal and one ovary, were studied over a 15-day period in rats, some of whom were subjected to 8 h of daily immobilization. The compensatory hypertrophy (CH) of the contralateral glands in non-stressed animals was associated with a significant increase in the plasma levels of LH (from the 1st to the 10th day), prolactin (PRL, from the 3rd to the 6th day), FSH (on the 3rd day) and corticosterone (from the 6th to the 15th day), whereas GH titers were not altered. Immobilization for 1, 3, 6, 10 or 15 days inhi

Does laxity alter the relationship between strength and physical function in knee osteoarthritis?

OBJECTIVE: Since strengthening interventions have had a lower-than-expected impact on patient function in studies of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and it is known that laxity influences muscle activity, this study examined whether the relationship between strength and function is weaker in the presence of laxity. METHODS: One hundred sixty-four patients with knee OA were studied. Knee OA was defined by the presence of definite osteophytes, and patients had to have at least a little difficulty with knee-requiring activities. Tests were performed to determine quadriceps and hamstring strength, varus

Effect of clozapine on physical and verbal aggression.

OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis that clozapine reduced serious physically and verbally aggressive behavior of persons with schizophrenia whose symptoms did not respond to typical neuroleptic treatment was tested. METHOD: Incident reports of aggression and restraint of 75 such inpatients were reviewed for 3 months before clozapine treatment and for 6 months of clozapine treatment. BPRS scores were also examined. Twenty-eight patients with no incidents were removed from study. RESULTS: There were significantly fewer incidents of physical aggression per month per patient on clozapine than before cloz

Exercise Attenuates Neuroinflammation in Chronic Restraint Stress Induced Depression Model by Downregulating GDF15 Expression.

Exercise has been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms and enhance bodily functions. However, the precise mechanisms underlying its antidepressant effects remain incompletely understood. In this study, we observed that treadmill exercise may exert antidepressant effects in a chronic restraint stress (CRS) mouse model by modulating the proinflammatory Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15)-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. Treadmill exercise improved cognitive behaviors in CRS mice and alleviated neuroinflammation, as evidenced by decreased expression of TNF-α,

Exercise exerts an anxiolytic effect against repeated restraint stress through 5-HT2A-mediated suppression of the adenosine A2A receptor in the basolateral amygdala.

Repeated or chronic stressful stimuli induce emotion- and mood-related abnormalities, such as anxiety and depression. Conversely, regular exercise exerts protective effects. Here, we found that exercise recovered anxiety-like behaviors, as measured using the open field and elevated plus maze tests in an anxiety mouse model. In addition to behavioral improvement, exercise enhanced the synaptic density of the 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor (5-HT2AR), but not the 5-HT1AR in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) region in this mouse model. Furthermore, global treatment with a selective 5-HT2AR antagonis
