A case of retroperitoneal fibrosis with hydronephrosis was treated with cortisone therapy. Computed tomographic images recorded marked and rapid reduction in the size of the soft tissue fibrotic mass and resolution of the hydronephrosis.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) commonly leads to renal impairment due to compression of ureters, and around 8% of patients eventually progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We present a case of RF in a 61-year-old female patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) who developed ESRD. She presented with a postrenal acute kidney injury, being initially treated with an ureteral catheter. A magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed parietal thickening of the right ureter, and she underwent right ureter reimplantation through bladder flap and psoas hitch. There was an extensive area of f…

A 46-year-old man with a past history of retroperitoneal fibrosis was admitted with an enlarged, hard right testis. The paratesticular lesion showed heterogeneous hypoechogenicity on ultrasonography, low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and lack of diffusion restriction on diffusion-weighted MRI. Following steroid treatment, the paratesticular mass was decreased in size on follow-up computed tomography. The radiologic and clinical features are recognized as a manifestation of immunoglobulin G4-related sclerosing disease involving the paratesticular regi…

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare disease manifesting as chronic soft tissue fibrosis in the retroperitoneum, with potential anatomic and/or functional compromise of adjacent organs. It can be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to other conditions such as cancers, autoimmune disorders, or drugs. We report herein a 66-year-old patient with symptomatic retroperitoneal fibrosis leading to bilateral hydronephrosis and renal failure, in whom, after a complex diagnostic work-up and protracted clinical course, a B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the retroperitoneal space and several vertebral bodies was…

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare fibroinflammatory condition involving the abdominal aorta, iliac vessels, and ureters that carries an association with several other autoimmune conditions. Most cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis are thought to be idiopathic. The disorder can affect all age groups but is most common in persons between the ages of 50 and 70 years. A subset of cases is associated with an underlying immunohematologic abnormality including lymphoma. We describe in this case report a highly unusual presentation of a young woman who died with a diagnosis of "idiopathic retroperitone…

A 72-year-old man was admitted to another hospital because of general fatigue and dyspnea secondary to renal insufficiency. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging showed left atrophic kidney, right hydronephrosis, and an intra-pelvic mass of soft-tissue density located anterior to the sacrum, involving the right ureter at the level between the 5th lumber vertebra and the sacrum. He was referred to our hospital after percutaneous nephrostomy was constructed into right kidney. CT-guided needle biopsy revealed the idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, leading us to give …

We report the fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET)/computed tomography (CT) findings of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) associated with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. A 69-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with obstructive jaundice. Six months prior to this admission, he was treated with steroid therapy for retroperitoneal fibrosis. Laboratory data showed that elevated T-bil, C-reactive protein, amylase and immunoglobulin 4, and antinuclear antibodies were positive. Clinical history, laboratory data, CT image, and magnetic resonance imaging led to a di…

BACKGROUND: Generally, retroperitoneal fibrosis is an idiopathic process that envelopes and displaces ureters, causing hydronefrosis and renal failure. CT scan is the best choice for diagnosis. Other aetiologies described are malignancies, drugs, aorta aneurisms and immunological or rheumatological diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male with hypertension and diabetes was operated on radical nephrectomy for renal mass. Pathological examination showed sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma, Fürhman 3 grade, pT2 N0. Within 6 months of surgery, control CT scan demonstrated a left retroperitone…
