Two cases in which patients presented with lower back pain and bacteraemia, and in which the diagnosis of iliopsoas abscess was made by computed tomography, are reported. Before the introduction of computed tomography, this diagnosis was difficult to establish by means of clinical and radiological investigations. Computed tomography makes it possible to obtain a clear view of the retroperitoneum.

Iatrogenic ureteral injuries are not common but may occur whenever the retroperitoneum is opened. The best time to treat these injuries is when they occur. The abdominal surgeon is responsible for the immediate treatment of ureteral injuries that he causes and should be able to take care of most of them. The author describes methods for preventing and managing ureteral puncture, crushing injury, kinking and ligation of the ureter, partial and complete transection of ureters, excision of both short and long segments of the ureter and ureteral devascularization.

Lymphograms of 40 patients were made on xeroradiographic plates and conventional X-ray films. Both imaging procedures are compared in regard to their spatial and contrast resolution. Although xeroradiography offers little advantage in retroperitoneal lymphography, it essentially improves imaging of brachial lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes.

Retroperitoneal lumbocrural abscess occurred in 12 patients of 231 with Crohn's colitis or ileocolitis. Although all patients with this complication fell within the group of 175 ileocolitis patients, at least four originated in fistulous tracts of the colon. Eleven of the 12 abscesses developed spontaneously as the first major complication of the disease.
