Twenty-nine patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis seen at the three main hospitals in Auckland between 1967 and 1977 have been reviewed. Of the five diagnostic criteria used, weakness of proximal muscles (including neck flexors) was the single most important clinical diagnostic feature. Thirty-six cases of meningiomas in cats were reviewed as to the clinical signs and anatomic location. Age, breed, and sex also were noted. It was found that, in general, meningiomas affected older cats, with two thirds of them being greater than or equal to 10 years old. Thirty-six patients with benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) were reviewed. Follow-up was obtained on 33 patients (91%) after a mean period of 7 1/2 years. Precipitating factors were found in 27 patients (75%). On admission, 5 patients had retro-ocular pain, especially on eye movements, a complaint not yet described in BIH. Acute mesenteric infarction was diagnosed clinically or post mortem in 83 patients over a 10 years period in 4 surgical departments. The present study is concerned with 56 of these patients who suffered occlusive disease of the mesenteric vessels and on whom sufficient data were available.
