SAILOR: perceptual anchoring for robotic cognitive architectures.

Symbolic anchoring is an important topic in robotics, as it enables robots to obtain symbolic knowledge from the perceptual information acquired through their sensors and maintain the link between that knowledge and the sensory data. In cognitive-based robots, this process of transforming sub-symbolic data generated by sensors to obtain and maintain symbolic knowledge is still an open problem. To address this issue, this paper presents SAILOR, a framework for symbolic anchoring integrated into ROS 2. SAILOR aims to maintain the link between symbolic data and perceptual data in real robots over…

EMG-Controlled Soft Robotic Bicep Enhancement.

Industrial workers often engage in repetitive lifting tasks. This type of continual loading on their arms throughout the workday can lead to muscle or tendon injuries. A non-intrusive system designed to assist a worker's arms would help alleviate strain on their muscles, thereby preventing injury and minimizing productivity losses. The goal of this project is to develop a wearable soft robotic arm enhancement device that supports a worker's muscles by sharing the load during lifting tasks, thereby increasing their lifting capacity, reducing fatigue, and improving their endurance to help preven

Action recognition in medical environments for robotic assistance.

PURPOSE: Teamwork is fundamental to medical practice and relies on seamless collaboration among professionals with different tasks. Integrating robotic systems into this environment demands smooth interactions. Human action recognition, which infers a person's state without explicit input, can support this. We focus on handovers between medical staff, using the actions as implicit cues for robotic assistance to replace the giving party in such scenarios. METHODS: Skeletal information processed with differing machine learning algorithms makes it possible to derive actions out of sequential ima

Robotic radiosurgery for the treatment of pediatric arteriovenous malformations.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric intracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have a greater cumulative lifetime risk of rupture than those in adults. Although obliteration after radiation occurs in a dose-dependent manner, increasing radiation doses must be balanced against the risk of adverse radiation effects (AREs). The authors aimed to assess the efficacy of robotic radiosurgery for pediatric AVMs. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of pediatric patients with AVMs at a single institution who underwent robotic radiosurgery between 2005 and 2021 with one of 3 radiosurgery dosing

Robotic liver transplantation: University of Modena experience.

Minimally invasive techniques for solid organ transplantation are well established in kidney transplantation, whereas progress in liver transplantation has been comparatively slower. The transition to a fully minimally invasive approach for liver transplantation has required a gradual, stepwise development, significantly accelerated by the introduction of robotic technology. We herein report the largest series of whole-graft robotic liver transplantation and provide preliminary observations. This study is a retrospective, single-arm, single-center analysis of patients who underwent fully robot

Electrohydraulic Jammed Variable Stiffness Robotic Link.

Robotic links play a vital role in transmitting force and torque, ensuring precise robotic movements. Traditional rigid links, typically made from metals, pose a risk of injury in human-robot interactions or damage to other objects due to their noncompliant and stiff nature and have limited adaptability across various tasks. Variable stiffness robotic links (VSRLs) using hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators offer a solution, enhancing safety and adaptability while maintaining precision. This study introduces an electrohydraulic jammed VSRL utilizing a strip-shap

Multidirectional Pulley Maneuver Technique in Robotic Hepatectomy.

BACKGROUND: In robotic hepatectomy, two free robotic arms and a non-robotic traction of the liver is crucial for controlling bleeding1. Recently, a non-robotic arm traction technique with a pulley mechanism were reported2. Despite its advantages, this technique has three limits: fixed traction direction, unadjustable force reduction, and limited to one or two uses3. To overcome these limitations, we developed the multidirectional Pulley maneuver (MDPM), which we describe in this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between October 2024 and November 2024, five patients underwent robotic hepatectomy u

Robotic cholecystectomy with cholecysto-duodenal fistula division.

Cholecysto-duodenal fistula (CDF) is a rare complication of chronic calculous cholecystitis. Due to advancements in minimally invasive techniques, a paradigm shift has occurred from the traditional open surgery to laparoscopic repair, but only one case report highlights robotic repair. In this article, we report a case of CDF management using a robotic approach. A woman in her 50s with a history of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery presented with postprandial right upper quadrant abdominal pain, associated with diarrhoea. Abdominal ultrasound showed cholelithiasis with dilated comm

Robotic partial splenectomy: a new standardized approach.

The treatment of benign splenic diseases is trending toward a conservative approach, especially for young patients, due to the importance of preserving as much splenic parenchyma as possible. Minimally invasive partial splenectomy (PS), which has become the gold standard for managing benign splenic conditions, is generally associated with low morbidity and near-zero mortality. Herein, we describe a standardized and safe technique to perform this procedure. This new approach combines preoperative selective distal embolization of the splenic artery with indocyanine green (ICG)-guided robotic par

Patient selection in robotic mitral valve surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: National databases reveal increased application of the surgical robot to facilitate mitral valve repair. Single-center and multiinstitutional studies confirm that excellent results are achievable with robotic mitral valve repair. However, not all patients with degenerative mitral valve disease are appropriate candidates for robotic mitral valve repair. RECENT FINDINGS: With increased experience, surgeons have successfully applied the surgical robot to perform mitral valve repair in conjunction with concomitant procedures. Concurrently, selection criteria have expanded, enab

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyelolithotomy in a horseshoe kidney.

Nephrolithiasis is one of the most common indications for surgery in patients with a horseshoe kidney. Robotic-assisted surgery has become a staple in urologic practice, yet its application in stone management is largely undefined. We present a patient with a horseshoe kidney, who underwent a robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyelolithotomy (RPL) to treat a 3 cm stone burden. This procedure allowed for safe access that could not be obtained with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and stone removal without fragmentation, which would have been challenging with traditional laparoscopy. We advocate f
