The percentage of circulating E-rosetting lymphocytes and the presence of serum E-rosette inhibitory substance were determined in 58 marasmic, 13 kwashiorkor and 22 well-fed children. The blood levels of soluble immune complexes and some acute phase proteins were also measured. The percentage of E-rosetting lymphocytes was significantly higher in the well-fed than in the malnourished children. Production of the pregnancy-specific protein early pregnancy factor (EPF) was monitored by the rosette inhibition test in a group of 13 nulliparous women. EPF could be detected in serum within 48 hours of fertilization; of 28 cycles in which intercourse took place at the time of ovulation, EPF was detected in 18. However, EPF production continued for more than 14 days in only four cases. Successful pregnancy was maintained in two of these while in the other two, disappearance of EPF preceded miscarriage. In CSF of patients with acute aseptic meningitis (AAM) an increase in the percentage of total and active T lymphocytes was observed, whereas in SSPE a decrease in T cells was noted. In SSPE there was the increase in the relative number of lymphocytes bearing "avid" FcIgG receptor and decrease in alpha-naphthyl nonspecific esterase-positive cells, but in AAM the cell proportions were not disturbed. A laboratory and clinical evaluation of 24 patients with hairy cell leukemia was carried out over a 23-month period. Most patients had splenomegaly without adenopathy or pancyotpenia. Nine of the patients had undergone splenectomy prior to referral; their median WBC count was 6600/mm3.
