The fetal respiratory response to acute hypoxia is characterized by depression, often to apnea. This study examined the effect of hypoxia on the electromyogram (EMG) of the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle. Under anesthesia catheters were placed in the fetal sheep carotid artery, fourth cerebral ventricle, trachea and amniotic fluid and wires sewn into the diaphragm and TA muscle. OBJECTIVE: Gastroschisis is associated with inflammatory changes in the exposed bowel which leads to intestinal dysmotility after postnatal repair. The insult is a combined effect of amniotic fluid exposure and mechanical constriction. Sheep farming in New Zealand is based on an outdoor grazing system with various systems of grazing management utilised depending on the type of farm and the time of year. Two groups of 40 ewes from each of two flocks were used in a field trial of the efficacy of dicyclanil to protect them against a natural infestation by Wohlfahrtia magnifica larvae, when administered topically as a spray-on formulation. To determine whether damage to the fetal kidneys plays a role in the formation of hydrops fetalis following a severe asphyxial episode, six chronically catheterised fetal sheep, at 0.6 gestation (90 days; term 150 days), were subjected to 30 min of complete umbilical cord occlusion. We used a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal design to estimate seroprevalence of Brucella antibodies in Awassi sheep and the incidence of abortion due to brucellosis during one lambing season, and to test risk factors. A comprehensive simulation model for sheep blowfly strike due to Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which builds on previously published versions but also incorporates important new empirical data, is used to explain patterns of lamb and ewe strike recorded on 370 farms in south-west, south-east and central England and Wales.
