A Multicenter Retrospective Clinical Study with Up-to-5-Year Follow-up Utilizing a Method that Enhances Bone Density and Allows for Transcrestal Sinus Augmentation Through Compaction Grafting.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and predictability of a novel biomechanical, minimally invasive bone instrumentation technique that enhances bone density through compaction grafting, called osseous densification, and allows for transcrestal sinus membrane elevation and augmentation with simultaneous implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who were consecutively treated with the bone densification and transcrestal sinus augmentation technique and were followed up in three treatment centers between May 2012 and September 2017 were included in this retrospective study. The summ

Bacterial influence on consolidation of bone grafts in maxillary sinus elevation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify microorganisms present on the maxillary sinus floor at the moment of sinus elevation surgery and, using tomography, to investigate the repercussions these might have for regenerated bone 9 months after the procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 174 patients (90 women and 84 men) with a mean age of 55.92 years underwent 227 sinus elevations (120 left sinus, 107 right sinus). As the membrane was lifted, a sample of the maxillary sinus floor was collected with a cotton swab, and placed on a blood agar and chocolate agar culture to incubate for 48 h at

Stage Characterization and Marginal Bone Loss Evaluation Up to 96 Months of Crestal Sinus Augmentation With Sequential Drills: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The 2-stage crestal approach to augment the maxillary sinus is a little-used technique. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess events characterizing stages of this technique after implant placement in the posterior maxilla with residual bone height less than 4 mm and evaluate the marginal bone loss (MBL) changes over time. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients underwent unilateral sinus augmentations using the trancrestal technique with mineralized allograft. Six-months (6 m) after first surgery, if skeletal subsidence prevented insertion of a 10-mm-length impla

The influence of particulated autogenous bone on the early volume stability of maxillary sinus grafts with biphasic calcium phosphate: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether autogenous bone impacts the grafts' stability when added to biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) within the first six months of maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA). PURPOSE: To investigate the volume stability of BCP alone and in mixtures with autogenous bone for MSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in eight patients in a split-mouth design using BCP at the control site and adding particulated autologous bone at the test site (BCPAB). Based on 16 computed tomography (CT) the volumetric changes were evaluated using the V

Efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin in maxillary sinus augmentation and simultaneous implant placement in deficient maxillary ridges: A pilot comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation with dental implants has become the most widely accepted treatment protocol for rehabilitation of lost natural teeth. Direct sinus lift is one of the most predictable procedures for augmenting the deficient posterior maxillary ridges. METHODS: The study was designed in patients with insufficient bone for implants in the maxillary posterior ridges. The test group received platelet-rich fibrin alone as filler, and the control group received a bone allograft. The residual bone height (RBH), implant mobility, and soft tissue characteristics between and within the groups

Minimally invasive endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy for the prevention of maxillary sinusitis in association with dental implantation in the posterior maxilla--a proposal.

Penetration of the maxillary sinus floor membrane during sinus lift occasionally induces maxillary sinusitis. However, maxillary sinusitis m … onceivably is useful to prevent potential occlusion of the natural ostium associated with maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures. Although our technique is not a new concept, this is the first report to propose this kind of procedure as an adjunct to dental implantation. Our method is cost-effective and can be performed under topical anesthesia as a same-day surger …

Injectable tissue-engineered bone using autogenous bone marrow-derived stromal cells for maxillary sinus augmentation: clinical application report from a 2-6-year follow-up.

This clinical study used injectable tissue-engineered bone, along with bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMDSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to conduct maxillary sinus floor augmentation by the simultaneous placement of bone graft and dental implants and to examine the state of regenerated bone after functional loading in 16 sinus augmentations in 12 patients whose alveolar crestal bone height was 2-10 mm. We used PRP as an autologous scaffold-which provides signal molecules-with in vitro expanded BMDSCs to enhance osteogenesis. All 41 dental implants prepared with the materials were clin…

One-step approach for implant placement and subantral bone regeneration using bovine hydroxyapatite: a 2- to 6-year follow-up study.

PURPOSE: Pneumatized sinuses in the posterior maxilla often make implant placement difficult or impossible. A sinus lifting procedure can reliably augment the bone height, with the highest success rates reported when two-stage implants are placed 6 to 9 months later. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical reliability of a shortened approach in which nonsubmerged implants were placed at the time of sinus augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients treated with sinus floor elevation and simultaneous implant placement at the authors' institution from 1999 to 2004 were retrospec

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a rare case of a critical lesion encompassing the conduction system and the heart valve.

PURPOSE: Anastomosis between posterior superior alveolar artery and infraorbital artery can go through bony canal in the lateral wall of the maxilla. This artery is called alveolar antral artery. It can complicate lateral sinus lift procedure by bleeding and hemosinus formation or bone graft wash out. The artery can also go in soft tissues where is not visible on cone beam computed tomography. In previous studies, the relation of this artery to sinus floor or alveolar process was measured. These structures are highly unstable during lifetime and after tooth loss. The aim of this study is to st

Tilted Endosseous Dental Implants in Atrophic Maxilla: A Clinical Prospective Study.

Background Atrophic edentulous maxillary arches present a significant surgical challenge for conventional implant placement owing to inadequate bone height, pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, and compromised bone quality in the posterior region. Traditional solutions, including sinus floor elevation, ridge augmentation, and bone grafting, carry inherent morbidity and procedural complexity. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of tilted endosseous dental implants placed in atrophic maxillae, with specific assessment of osseointegration quality, crest

Risk Factors for Implant Failure Following Transcrestal Sinus-Floor Elevation: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Although transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE) is widely used for cases of insufficient residual bone height in the posterior maxilla, few studies focus on the risk factors of early implant failure associated with TSFE procedures. This study aimed to identify and summarize the possible risk factors of implant failure associated with TSFE to ensure a more predictable implant survival rate using TSFE. We report the treatment of a patient with implant failure following TSFE and discuss this case's possible associated risk factors. A standard implant with a diameter of 4.8 mm and length of 10
