[Loss of alveolar attachments in smoker's lungs and its relation to small airway abnormalities].

The alveolar attachments and small airway abnormalities in the lungs of smokers were measured by computerized imaging to study the relationship between loss of alveolar attachments and small airway abnormalities, the smoker's lungs were divided into three groups: no emphysema (NE), centrilobular emphysema (CLE) and panlobular emphysema (PLE). The distance between normal alveolar attachments (Distance) and percent abnormal alveolar attachments (% Abnormal) in CLE were significantly higher than in NE (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01), and no significant difference in the number of normal alveolar attachme…

Gender difference in airway hyperresponsiveness in smokers with mild COPD. The Lung Health Study.

Methacholine bronchoprovocation challenge testing was successfully completed in 5,662 participants (3,556 men and 2,106 women) at the time they were randomized into the Lung Health Study, a multicenter trial designed to evaluate early intervention in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). All participants were smokers between the ages of 35 and 60 yr who had mild COPD. The male:female prevalence of a positive challenge (PC20FEV1) was 25%:48% and 63%:87% at a PC20FEV1 of < or = 5 mg/ml (AHR5) and < or = 25 mg/ml (AHR25), respectively. This analysis explores these marked gender difference…

The acute effect of smoking on platelet and endothelial release reaction is suppressed in chronic smokers.

Whilst increased plasma beta-thromboglobulin (beta TG), platelet factor 4 and thrombospondin levels are regarded as reflecting the release reaction of platelets, tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels represent endothelial release reaction and/or damage. In this study including 12 smokers and 9 nonsmokers, we investigated the acute and chronic effect of smoking on these parameters and antithrombin III, protein S and fibrinogen, as well. Nonsmokers were found to have somewhat higher plasma levels of beta TG, t-PA and PAI-1 than chronic smok…

Placental-like alkaline phosphatase. Re-evaluation of the tumor marker with exclusion of smokers.

This report demonstrates that smoking is a major factor of nonspecific elevation of the tumor marker placental-like alkaline phosphatase (PLAP). In 98 healthy nonsmokers the mean of the enzyme activity was determined as 0.068 U/L (range, +/- 2 SD 0-0.144 U/L) compared to a mean of 0.378 U/L (range, +/- 2 SD 0-1.02 U/L) in 65 smokers. In view of this finding the usefulness of PLAP as a tumor marker was re-evaluated in 286 patients with various neoplasms and a negative smoking history. Of these patients, 23% and 50% had elevated values for PLAP and carcinoembryonic antigen, respectively. When co…

Alveolar macrophage function and inflammatory stimuli in smokers with and without obstructive lung disease.

To explore possible cofactors in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in smokers, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage in 6 smokers with normal pulmonary function, 6 smokers with COPD (FEV1/FVC less than or equal to 65%) matched for smoking history and age, and 9 age-matched nonsmoking control subjects. Elastase release by macrophages from smokers with COPD was significantly higher (p less than 0.016) than was elastase release by macrophages from normal smokers. There were no differences between chemoattractiveness of alveolar macrophage supernatants for one person's …

Evaluation of oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal and esophageal cancer risk in reverse smokers of chuttas.

Reverse smoking of chuttas seems to have no significance for the development of cancer of the hypopharynx, esophagus, larynx and nasopharynx. The conventional chutta smoker runs a slight risk of developing hypopharyngeal cancer. Other smoking and chewing habits do not seem to play any role in our area as these habits are very uncommon.

Breathing carcinogens: PM2.5 air pollution and lung cancer in never-smokers, a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS) disproportionately affects women and younger individuals, and its incidence has increased over recent decades. Environmental respiratory hazards, such as particulate matter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5), are associated with lung cancer incidence and mortality, but the mechanisms by which PM2.5 increases lung cancer susceptibility remain incompletely understood. This review summarizes the current evidence linking PM2.5 exposure to LCINS and identifies priorities for future research. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE …

Oral microbiome dysbiosis among cigarette smokers and smokeless tobacco users compared to non-users.

Tobacco use significantly influences the oral microbiome. However, less is known about how different tobacco products specifically impact the oral microbiome over time. To address this knowledge gap, we characterized the oral microbiome of cigarette users, smokeless tobacco users, and non-users over 4 months (four time points). Buccal swab and saliva samples (n = 611) were collected from 85 participants. DNA was extracted from all samples and sequencing was carried out on an Illumina MiSeq, targeting the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Cigarette and smokeless tobacco users had more diverse

Assessment of P16 and Ki-67 Proteins Immunoexpressing in Oral Mucosa Among Saudi Smokers.

BACKGROUND: It is widely known that tobacco use significantly contributes to a variety of health problems, including mouth cancer. The proteins P16 and Ki-67 have a role in regulating the cell cycle and promoting cell growth. Analyzing the levels of these proteins can give us valuable information about the overall health of cells. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the cellular alterations and immunohistochemical expression of P16 and Ki-67 in the oral mucosa of Saudi smokers. METHOD: From March to December 2023, a cross-sectional study scraped 500 samples from the buccal mucosa. Participa…

Racial disparities in intensity of smoke exposure and nicotine intake among low-dependence smokers.

BACKGROUND: Compared to white smokers, Black smokers are at disproportionately higher risk for smoking-related disease, despite consuming fewer cigarettes per day (CPD). To examine racial disparities in biobehavioral influences on smoking and disease risk, we analyzed the relationship between self-reported tobacco dependence and intensity of tobacco smoke exposure per cigarette, on the one hand, and intensity of nicotine intake per cigarette, on the other. METHODS: In 270 Black and 516 white smokers, smoke exposure was measured by expired carbon monoxide (CO), and nicotine intake was measured…

Smoking cues impair monitoring but not stopping during response inhibition in abstinent male smokers.

The attenuated inhibitory control of smokers is a stumbling block for treating nicotine dependence. Unfortunately, smokers are often exposed to cigarette-related salient cues, which may violate homeostasis, override self-control, and lead to relapse. To understand the mechanisms underlying these associations, we investigate the cognitive and neural processes of inhibitory control (including proactive and reactive inhibition) of smoking cues in abstinent smokers. Twenty-six smokers completed cue-reactivity and stop signal tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging scans, on two separate…
