Cytopathologic features of orbital intraosseous chordoid meningioma: report of a case and distinction from other myxoid/mucoid tumors.

Chordoid meningioma (CM) is characterized by a striking histologic resemblance to chordoma and propensity for aggressive behavior or recurrence (WHO grade II designation). Orbital intraosseous CM is extremely uncommon and only one case report has been documented. A case is presented here in which squash smears of a left orbital tumor in a 53-year-old male revealed small clusters or cord-like structures of bland tumor cells embedded in a myxoid or mucinous background. Whorl-like structures were also identified. The tumor cells possessed uniformly round nuclei with a smooth nuclear outline, fine

Cardiac angioleiomyoma in 44 cattle in Japan (1982-2009).

A retrospective study was performed on primary cardiac tumors found in 44 cattle during meat inspection in Japan, using histology, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. The age of affected cattle ranged from 10 to 129 months; 82% were less than 3 years old. In 38 hearts, the tumor was solitary; the remaining 6 hearts had multiple masses. All tumors were subendocardial and involved the papillary muscles and/or cardiac valves. Two histologic patterns were recognized; both included giant cells. Pattern 1 was characterized by interlacing fascicles of spindle-shaped cells; pattern 2 resemb

Laparoscopic resection of schwannoma of the ascending colon.

Schwannomas of the colon are rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We report a case of schwannoma of the ascending colon that was resected laparoscopically. A 64-year-old woman was referred to our hospital by her local clinic for further evaluation and management of a submucosal tumor of the ascending colon. A definitive preoperative diagnosis could not be reached despite examinations. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor, leiomyoma and lymphoma were the differential diagnoses. We performed a laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with D2 lymph node dissection. Histological findings with hematoxy

Myolipoma of the retroperitoneum.

A case of retroperitoneal myolipoma is reported. A 55-year-old woman with the main complaint of an abdominal mass was admitted to Teikyo University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma was suspected based on magnetic resonance imaging, and the tumor was resected. The resected tumor was well encapsulated and 30 x 15 x 8 cm in size. Histologically, it consisted of mature adipose cells and smooth muscle cells. Neither nuclear atypia nor mitosis was observed in either component. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed as myolipoma of the retroperitoneum. Retroperitoneal myolipoma is

Spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma of the retroperitoneum: an unusual case developed in a pregnant woman but obscured by pregnancy.

Spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is an uncommon histiologic variant of RMS that has spindle cell morphology. This tumor occurs almost exclusively in childhood and more rarely in adults. Only a few adult cases, including two retroperitoneal cases in male patients, have been documented previously. We describe a rare case of spindle cell RMS of the retroperitoneum in a 37-year-old woman developed during pregnancy and incidentally discovered after vaginal delivery. Computed tomography showed a huge tumor mass, measured 20 × 20 × 15 cm in size, arising in retroperitoneal space. Histologically, t

Intraparenchymal Leiomyoma of the Breast: A Rare Location for an Infrequent Tumor.

Intraparenchymal leiomyoma of the breast are among benign non-epithelial tumors with the lowest incidence. Although it displays a benign histology, it may be confused with malignant lesions and create diagnostic confusion. In this paper, we report a 44-year-old woman with a painless mass with a diameter of 1.5 cm in the upper medial quadrant of her right breast. The lesion was removed surgically. The lesion's histologic examination and immunohistochemical analysis revealed a smooth muscle tumor of the breast. The patient was initially diagnosed with fibroadenoma and was followed in terms of th…

Giant renal artery pseudoaneurysm caused by rupture of renal angiomyolipoma following pregnancy: endovascular treatment and review of the literature.

Renal angiomyolipoma is a hamartomatous, benign tumor composed of blood vessels, fatty tissue and smooth muscle cells, and is often detected incidentally. It can also be associated with the tuberous-sclerosis complex (TSC). Pregnancy and use of oral contraceptives are known to be associated with an increased risk of tumoral rupture and bleeding. Herein, we report a unique case of renal angiomyolipoma associated with TSC who presented with hypovolemic shock as a result of spontaneous rupture of a giant renal pseudoaneurysm, immediately after pregnancy. Emergency endovascular treatment was succe

Intussusception and leiomyosarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract in a pediatric patient. Case report and review of the literature.

Intestinal leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor in infants and children; only 46 cases have been reported in the English literature. Presenting signs and symptoms include abdominal pain and gastrointestinal obstruction and bleeding. We describe a neonate with the unique presentation of ileocecal intussusception accompanying an ileal leiomyosarcoma. In contrast to adult patients, where intussusception is associated with smooth muscle tumors in 30% of cases, leiomyosarcoma and subsequent intussusception is rare in infancy and childhood. The overall prognosis for long-term survival is similar for both …

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma in association with hemihypertrophy.

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma was removed from an 18-year old caucasian male who also had hemihypertrophy. The very large benign mesenchymoma which was removed was found to consist of an admixture of cytologically mature vascular spaces, adipose tissue, and smooth muscle. After removal of the tumor, the patient has had no recurrence with one year of follow-up. Patients with hemihypertrophy appear to be at high risk to develop neoplasms. Malignant neoplasms of the adrenal gland, kidney, and liver are most common. It is suggested that patients with hemihypertrophy should be followed periodicall

Benign Metastasizing Leiomyoma and Findings on Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography.

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma is a rare condition where benign smooth muscle tumors having a histological appearance similar to uterine leiomyoma are present at distant sites. This entity is commonly associated with a past history of hysterectomy done for uterine fibroids. The knowledge of the presence of significant fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in leiomyoma helped in the diagnosis of this condition in a 47-year-old patient who being evaluated for multiple unusual sites of metastases; this was further confirmed on histopathology.

Nasal angiomyolipoma causing persistent nasal congestion.

Angiomyolipomas are benign tumors composed of blood vessels, adipose tissue, and smooth muscle. Usually, these lesions are located in the kidney and are found in association with tuberous sclerosis. The current case describes the rare presence of an angiomyolipoma within the nasal vestibule, leading to nasal obstruction. Surgical resection of the lesion was curative, and the patient's nasal congestion improved postoperatively. Consistent with previous findings in the literature, the patient's angiomyolipoma had not recurred at subsequent postoperative visits.

[A case report: retroperitoneal inflammatory fibrosarcoma that revealed progressive enlargement].

A 65-year-old woman presented with microscopic hematuria. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid tumor measuring 64 x 55 x 71 mm adjacent to the right kidney. After 51 days, the CT demonstrated progressive enlargement of the tumor (110 x 80 x 82 mm), and the tumor-doubling time was calculated as 33 days. A transperitoneal right radical nephrectomy was performed. Histologically, the tumor was arising from retroperitoneum and consisted of variable arranged spindle cell proliferation with an infiltration of inflammatory cells. Immunostaining examination showed po

Familial cutaneous and uterine leiomyomas: case report.

Cutaneous leiomyomas are rare, benign tumors arising from the arrectores pilorum muscles of the skin, the tunica dartos of the scrotum, muscles of the areola of the nipple, and vulvar or vascular smooth muscles. Multiple cutaneous leiomyomas originate from the arrectores pilorum muscles of the skin (piloleiomyomata cutis). Occasionally, they seem hereditary and may be associated with uterine myomas. We present a family in which the mother and 4 of her 6 daughters had uterine myomas. All sisters had to undergo hysterectomy before the age of 40, and three of them had multiple cutaneous leiomyoma

[Innovations in the classification of soft tissue tumors].

Soft tissue tumors are a very heterogeneous group of tumors. Their classification is regularly updated by the World Health Organization (WHO), most recently in 2020. The current classification of soft tissue tumors emphasizes molecular biological tumor characteristics, which enable tumor-specific treatment. In addition to Ewing's sarcoma, which occurs as bone as well as extra-skeletal soft tissue tumors as a small round cell sarcoma, three other subtypes of undifferentiated, small and round cell sarcomas have been introduced. Some names of the new sarcomas can be derived from the gene mutation

Mesenchymal tumors of the stomach: radiologic and pathologic correlation.

Mesenchymal tumors of the stomach are uncommon, with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) being the most common among them. Majority of the tumors may arise from cells of Cajal, smooth muscle cells, neural cells, totipotent stem cells, adipocytes or fibroblasts. Imaging plays an important role not only in staging but also in characterizing these tumors. Many of these tumors have characteristic imaging features. GISTs usually present as large cavitating and necrotic tumors with exophytic component. Presence of fat tissue within the tumor suggests a lipoma or a teratoma, early phase hyperenhanc

[A Case of Laparoscopic Gastric Local Resection for Simultaneous Multiple Gastric GIST Discovered Owing to Gastrointestinal Bleeding].

An 80-year-old woman with anemia presented to our hospital. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a 4 cm submucosal tumor(SMT)with a delle and 2 cm SMT in the upper part of the stomach. CT revealed sustained enhancement of both tumors. The posterior tumor was an intraductal growth, and the anterior tumor was an extravascular growth. We performed a laparoscopic gastric local excision for the multiple SMTs. The anterior tumor was resected with an automatic suture instrument. However, the posterior tumor could not be identified from within the abdominal cavity because it was resected while co

Coexistence of gastrointestinal stromal tumor, esophageal and gastric cardia carcinomas.

Gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma are distinct neoplasms originating from different cell layers; therefore, simultaneous development of such carcinomas is relatively rare. Auxiliary examinations revealed coexistence of esophageal and gastric cardia carcinoma with lymph node metastasis in a 77-year-old man. Intraoperatively, an extraluminal tumor (about 6.0 cm × 5.0 cm × 6.0 cm) at the posterior wall of the gastric body, a tumor (about 2.5 cm × 2.0 cm) in the lower esophagus, and an infiltrative and stenosing tumo

Retroperitoneal leiomyoma located in the broad ligament: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal leiomyoma is a rare benign tumor. Retroperitoneal leiomyomas located in the latissimus uterine ligament are even rarer. Retroperitoneal leiomyomas have similar characteristics to uterine leiomyomas in terms of tissue, which results in confusion during diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: A 47-year-old female with 3 years of pain in the right lower quadrant and discovery of a pelvic mass 13 d ago underwent open abdominal exploration. In the right broad ligament, a solid mass with well circumscribed boundaries, approximately 15 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm in size was bluntly peeled off.

A microvenular hemangioma with a rare expression of progesterone receptor immunocreativity and a review of the literature.

Microvenular hemangioma (MVH) is a rare benign vascular tumor with a controversial etiology, but hormone receptor alterations might be involved. We report a case of MVH in a 41-year-old Taiwanese woman who presented with a 1.5 × 1 cm violaceous plaque on left thigh that had appeared 1 year previously. She had taken oral contraceptives for several years and stopped 1 year prior to presentation. Histologically, the tumor was composed of small and compressed venous structures infiltrating in the dermis and subcutis. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells displayed negative immunoreactivity for hu
