Navigating Mixed-Neurotype Dialogue: Environmental and Affective Influences on Autistic Speakers.

In this reflective report study, we examined communication challenges for autistic adults by examining the influences of emotional state and environmental context across neurotype conversation partners. Using the Neurotype Communication and Assistive Technology Survey (NCATS), we surveyed 165 autistic adults (18-35 years old) and analyzed 154 responses to capture both quantitative ratings and qualitative descriptions of past contextual conversations. The majority of the participants noted that environmental factors, such as crowdedness, noise levels, and familiarity, at least somewhat impacted

Online digital recovery support services: An overview of the science and their potential to help individuals with substance use disorder during COVID-19 and beyond.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and related social distancing public health recommendations will have indirect consequences for individuals with current and remitted substance use disorder (SUD). Not only will stressors increase risk for symptom exacerbation and/or relapse, but individuals will also have limited service access during this critical time. Individuals with SUD are using free, online digital recovery support services (D-RSS) that leverage peer-to-peer connection (i.e., social-online D-RSS) which simultaneously help these individuals to access support and adhere to public health

Maintenance and generalization of skills acquired through picture exchange communication system (PECS) training: a long-term follow-up.

Purpose: To conduct a follow-up assessment of the maintenance of communication skills of a 7-year-old child with autism spectrum disorder, 3 years 7 months post PECS training; and investigate the effects of environmental adaptations on the child's PECS and vocal communications. Methods: An alternating-treatments design enabled comparison of the effects of two treatment conditions (an environmental adaptation to increase need and opportunities for communication, versus a continuation of baseline procedures) on the child's PECS and vocal communications in the child's home. Results: Baseline data

A review of the literature on the effectiveness of housing and support, assertive community treatment, and intensive case management interventions for persons with mental illness who have been homeless.

A review of 16 controlled outcome evaluations of housing and support interventions for people with mental illness who have been homeless revealed significant reductions in homelessness and hospitalization and improvements in other outcomes (e.g., well-being) resulting from programs that provided permanent housing and support, assertive community treatment (ACT), and intensive case management (ICM). The best outcomes for housing stability were found for programs that combined housing and support (effect size = .67), followed by ACT alone (effect size = .47), while the weakest outcomes were foun

The impact of social isolation and loneliness on the well-being of carers of a person with dementia in aotearoa New Zealand.

Dementia is a leading cause of disability, and as the population ages, there will be a greater need for friends and family to care for people with Dementia. Unfortunately, informal care for a person with dementia is associated with poor psychological and physical health and lower quality of life of the caregiver. The aim of the present study was to understand how to best support caregivers within their communities by examining their experience of loneliness, isolation, and their relationship with well-being. The study used a representative sample of the New Zealand population in terms of ethni

Investigating the Interplay Between Mental Health Conditions and Social Connectedness on Suicide Risk: Findings from a Clinical Sample of Adolescents.

This study examined whether school and community connectedness buffer the relationships between mental health conditions and suicide risk in a clinical sample of adolescents with histories of substance use disorders. Data from 294 adolescents were examined, with approximately 58% reporting lifetime suicidal ideation and/or prior attempts. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine main and interaction effects on a three-category measure of suicide risk. Depression severity and panic disorder were associated with elevated suicidal ideation risk, whereas disordered eating was associated

[National information campaigns on depression. A biopsychosocial anthropology?].

INTRODUCTION: Information and prevention campaigns are privileged tools for public health institutions in their risk reduction policies concerning heath disorders and their consequences. Mental health in general, and depression in particular, have been the focus of several public campaigns in different countries for 20 years. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this paper is to analyse depression campaign messages, to highlight their underlying logics and to show some of their effects, in particular in relation to contextual conflicts between professionals that possibly emerge because of these campa

The methadone clinic: function and philosophy.

Currently, methadone clinics are organised within two models, the metabolic and the psychotherapeutic. These models are seen to lack a completely successful opiate abuse therapy. A new model, the social psychiatric, is proposed to correct the deficiencies of these first two.

Migration, ethnicity and psychoses: evidence, models and future directions.

There is a large body of research reporting high rates of psychotic disorders among many migrant and minority ethnic groups, particularly in Northern Europe. In the context of increasing migration and consequent cultural diversity in many places worldwide, these findings are a major social and public health concern. In this paper, we take stock of the current state of the art, reviewing evidence on variations in rates of psychoses and putative explanations, including relevant theories and models. We discuss in particular: a) the wide variation in reported rates of psychotic disorders by ethnic

Estimation of verbal intelligence in an elderly community: an epidemiological study using NART.

The National Adult Reading Test (NART) has become widely used by psychologists in clinical practice as part of the assessment of cognitive decline in organic mental disorders. Some normative data have been presented on community samples from a wide range of ages, but little is known of the instrument's performance in true community samples of the elderly. This study presents data on NART from an epidemiological study of dementia and cognitive impairment in elderly women. The contribution of educational level and social class to performance on the scale was examined. NART was found to be strong

Pharmacological treatment options for autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents.

Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) are frequently associated with dysfunctional behaviors and are characterized by deficits in socialization, communication, and behavioral rigidity. Despite the absence of a pharmacological cure for PDDs, many of the dysfunctional, coinciding behaviors may be treated pharmacologically. This article reviews what is known about the efficacy and tolerability of pharmacological interventions for the treatment of children and adolescents suffering from autistic spectrum disorders.

Uncertainty management and communication preferences related to genetic relativism among families affected by down syndrome, Marfan syndrome, and neurofibromatosis.

Genes hold opportunities for us to look backward and forward in family health and disease incidence. Our beliefs about genes' roles in health form around frameworks relating to personal control, and the influence of social networks and/or religious faith on genetic expression in health. These genetic relativistic frameworks were found to predict levels of illness uncertainty among 541 diagnosed adults and family members affected by neurofibromatosis, Down syndrome, and Marfan syndrome. Participants were recruited and surveyed about their expectations and preferences for communicating about the

Bias and bulimia nervosa: how typical are clinic cases?

OBJECTIVE: Since patients being treated for bulimia nervosa constitute only a minority of persons with the disorder, the cases seen in clinics may be subject to sampling bias. The aim of this study was to investigate sampling bias as it affects secondary referrals for bulimia nervosa. METHOD: The personal and family characteristics of a consecutive series of 60 women with secondary referrals for bulimia nervosa (clinic subjects) were compare with those of 83 subjects with bulimia who were recruited directly from the community. Most of the data were collected by interview. RESULTS: The demogr

Striatal synaptic changes and behavior in adult mouse upon prenatal exposure to valproic acid.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction. Altered synaptogenesis and aberrant connectivity responsible for social behavior and communication have been reported in autism pathogenesis. Autism has a strong genetic and heritable component; however, environmental factors including toxins, pesticides, infection and in utero exposure to drugs such as VPA have also been implicated in ASD. Administration of VPA during pregnancy has been used as a rodent model to study pathophysiologic

Oxytocin Reduces Subjective Fear in Naturalistic Social Contexts via Enhancing Top-Down Middle Cingulate Amygdala Regulation and Brain-Wide Fear Representations.

Accumulating evidence from animal and human studies suggests a fear-regulating potential of the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT), yet the clinical translation into novel interventions for pathological fear requires a behavioral and neurofunctional characterization under close-to-real-life conditions. Here, we combined a naturalistic fMRI-design that elicited strong and immersive fear experience in social and non-social contexts with a preregistered between-subjects randomized double-blind placebo-controlled intranasal OT trial (24 IU, n  =  67 healthy men). OT selectively reduced subjective fear in

Gasotransmitters and their influence on autism spectrum disorders - a systematic review.

Gasotransmitters, including nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), play an important role in normal physiological processes in the body, such as neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation. Dysregulation of signaling pathways of gasotransmitters contributes to the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. This systematic review aims to identify the potential role of gasotransmitters i

Subtyping Autism Spectrum Disorder With a Population Graph-Based Dual Autoencoder: Revealing Two Distinct Biotypes.

AIM: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant heterogeneity in clinical symptoms and underlying neurobiology. This study aimed to identify distinct ASD biotypes and uncover their neurobiological underpinnings using a novel graph-based subtyping approach. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI and clinical data from 443 males with ASD (17.22 ± 8.63 years) were analyzed. We proposed a population graph-based dual autoencoder for subtyping (PG-DAS), a deep clustering framework that integrates imaging data and nonimaging data to extract deep features for bi

Predictors of Aggression in Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Aggression is a common and impairing co-occurring behavior among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), negatively affecting developmental outcomes, family functioning, and social participation. Although numerous studies have examined factors associated with aggression in ASD, findings remain inconsistent, limiting efforts to improve early identification and intervention. This systematic review synthesized current evidence on predictors of aggression in children and adolescents with ASD. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023416081). A systematic search

The impact of exercise interventions on core symptoms of 3-12-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Exercise interventions targeting Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) represent a critical approach for mitigating functional impairments in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study, for the first time, based on motor development theory, employed a Network Meta-analysis (NMA) to examine the effects of four types of exercise interventions-Isolation of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS-I), Combination of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS-C), Fine Motor Movement (FMM), and Specialized Movement Skills (SMS)-on the core symptoms of ASD in children aged 3-12, including social communicatio
