PURPOSE: Investigate the association between presence, number and type of clinically relevant health conditions and a range of psychosocial outcomes (emotional, social, cognitive, physical) in survivors of childhood cancer (CCS).
METHODS: CCS from the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS)-LATER cohort (diagnosed between 1963-2001, attained age ≥ 18, diagnosed < 18, ≥ 5 years since diagnosis) completed a questionnaire on health conditions (2013-2014), and questionnaires on psychosocial outcomes (2017-2020): Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Short form 36, TNO-AZL Questionnaire for

This study investigated whether spontaneous level-2 perspective taking would emerge in 8-year-old Balinese children and whether it would be similarly modulated by the social group membership of the social partner as reported in previous studies conducted in Western countries. Children (N = 49) participated in a number verification task with a partner in which they had to make simple judgments about numbers displayed on a screen that either appeared the same or different from the perspective of the other person. Conditions varied in terms of the social group membership of the partner. Some chil

Using a combination of the paradigm of conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and of the paradigm of social interactions, we report here that in the rat, eating while anxious may result in long-term alterations in social behavior. In the conventional CTA, the subject learns to associate a tastant (the conditioned stimulus, CS) with delayed toxicosis (an unconditioned stimulus, UCS) to yield taste aversion (the conditioned response, CR). However, the association of taste with delayed negative internal states that could generate CRs that are different from taste aversion should not be neglected. Such

Social engagement is a critical process for children's language and social development and is altered in neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism. Although previous EEG studies have investigated correlates of children's social development in closely controlled experimental studies, few studies have examined how the brain reflects meaningful behavioral states, such as social engagement, within naturalistic parent-child interaction. This study collected EEG from typically developing toddlers of varying language ability and their parent (n = 49, 24-44 months) during the Social EEG paradigm; d

BACKGROUND: Studies focusing on assessing social cognition deficits in schizophrenia have been expanded to bipolar disorder considering the similarities shared between the two conditions. Existing research has identified significant deficits in social cognitive skills independent of mood states and neurocognitive deficits, which could indicate the potentiality of this domain to be an endophenotype for bipolar disorder.
METHODS: The current study assesses the impairments in social cognition in patients with bipolar disorder and their first degree relatives, simultaneously testing for neurocogn

BACKGROUND: Clinical researchers face challenges when trying to quantify diverse processes engaged during social interactions. We report results from two studies, each demonstrating the potential utility of tools for examining processes engaged during social interactions.
METHOD: In the first study, youth (n = 57) used a smartphone-based tool to rate mood and responses to social events. A subset (n = 20) completed the second, functional magnetic resonance imaging study. This second study related anxiety to error-evoked brain responses in two social conditions-while being observed and when alo…

There is extensive evidence of an association between early adversity and enduring neural changes that impact socioemotional processing throughout life. Yet little is known about the effects of on-going social discrimination on socioemotional functioning. Here we examined how cumulative experiences of social discrimination impact brain response during empathic responding-a crucial issue in South Africa, given its historical apartheid context and continuing legacies. White and Black South Africans completed measures of social adversity (early adversity and social discrimination), and underwent

OBJECTIVE: The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami affected approximately 53 000 people in the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. Approximately 30 000 people were relocated to temporary/rental housing. The remainder re-inhabited tsunami-affected houses, and their conditions were not known. As social isolation could affect physical and psychological health, we investigated the risk of social isolation among the survivors who returned to their homes.
METHODS: The surveyors went door-to-door to the tsunami-affected houses and interviewed each household between October 2011 and March 2012

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to acute stressful behavioral challenges in patients with social phobia.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with social phobia and 17 normal volunteers participated in two behavioral stressors: a speech task and physical exercise.
RESULTS: Normal volunteers (n = 14) demonstrated a significant 50% increase in salivary cortisol levels to the speech task. Three nonresponding normal volunteers demonstrated a 17% decrease. In contrast, patients with social phobia demonstrated dichotomous changes. Seven social phobia patien

Environmental enrichment (EE) is an experimental setting broadly used for investigating the effects of complex social, cognitive, and sensorimotor stimulations on brain structure and function. Recent studies point out that parental EE experience, even occurring in the pre-reproductive phase, affects neural development and behavioral trajectories of the offspring. In the present study we investigated the influences of pre-reproductive EE of female rats on maternal behavior and adolescent male offspring's coping response to an inescapable stressful situation after chronic social isolation. For t

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

BACKGROUND: Biological aging predicts health outcomes beyond chronological age. The relative contribution of social, economic, and health factors to biological aging differences between Black and White adults remains unclear.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 2086 community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (1757 non-Hispanic White; 329 non-Hispanic Black), biological age was measured using DNA methylation-based GrimAge. Accelerated aging was defined as having a biological age older than expected for one's chronological age. We used logistic regr

Background/Objectives: Community-based drug rehabilitation is a key component of public health strategies in China, with anti-drug social workers playing a frontline role in relapse prevention, social reintegration, and long-term recovery. However, the sustainability and effectiveness of this workforce remain uncertain due to complex organisational and structural conditions. This study aims to examine the professional roles, work-related challenges, and coping strategies of anti-drug social workers within community-based rehabilitation systems. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in acc

Mental health-related behaviours including addictive behaviours contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Social norm interventions appear to be a cost-effective means of reducing addictive behaviour. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive behaviours. We searched the databases Medline and PsycInfo from inception to April 2024 as well as reference lists of eligible studies and related systematic reviews for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive b

Improving captive conditions of pygmy slow lorises (Nekaris and Nijman have recently suggested that the pygmy slow loris should be called the pygmy loris and is distinctive enough to warrant a new genus, Xanthonycticebu) (Nycticebus pygmeaus) poses many challenges because detailed aspects of their lives in the wild are incomplete. This hinders efforts to replicate sustainable environments for them. To improve their well-being in captivity, eight rescued female pygmy slow lorises at the Japan Monkey Center (JMC) were socially housed in two types of groups following their solitary housing: two p

OBJECTIVE: Language patterns may elucidate mechanisms of mental health conditions. To inform underlying theory and risk models, we evaluated prospective associations between in vivo text messaging language and differential symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety.
METHODS: Over 16 weeks, we collected outgoing text messages from 335 adults. Using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), NRC Emotion Lexicon, and previously established depression and stress dictionaries, we evaluated the degree to which language features predict symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety

Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) between frontal delta (1-4 Hz) and beta (14-30 Hz) oscillations has been suggested as a candidate neural correlate of social anxiety disorder, a disorder characterized by fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. Prior studies have used amplitude-amplitude correlation (AAC) as a CFC measure and hypothesized it as a candidate neural mechanism of affective control. However, using this metric has yielded inconsistent results regarding the direction of CFC, and the functional significance of coupling strength is uncertain. To offer a better understandi

BACKGROUND: Known risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias include medical conditions, genetic vulnerability, depression, demographic factors and mild cognitive impairment. The role of feelings of loneliness and social isolation in dementia is less well understood, and prospective studies including these risk factors are scarce.
METHODS: We tested the association between social isolation (living alone, unmarried, without social support), feelings of loneliness and incident dementia in a cohort study among 2173 non-demented community-living older persons. Participants were foll

BACKGROUND: Specific medical conditions are more prevalent in Down syndrome (DS) compared to the general population. Medical heterogeneity has also been hypothesized to contribute to variability in outcomes in DS.
AIMS: This project aimed to examine the association between medical conditions (i.e., gastrointestinal issues, hearing loss, vision problems, and congenital heart defects) and cognition, language, and behavior in children and adolescents with DS.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Participants were 73 children and adolescents with DS, ages 6-17 years (M = 12.67, SD = 3.16). Caregivers reporte
