Predicting local COVID-19 emergences: A time-series classification approach and value of data from social media, search engines, and neighbouring regions.

BACKGROUND: Early warning for known infectious disease threats use methods that focus on detection of outbreaks, often at large geographical scales. However, earlier warning, specifically at the onset of disease emergence (i.e., first case(s)) and at finer spatial scales could significantly improve timeliness and targeting of prevention and control efforts. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that a early classification time-series approach can predict COVID-19 emergence at a local jurisdictional level with a 10-day lead time. METHODS: To predict emergence with a 10-day lead time in Canadia

COVID-19 information sources, knowledge, attitude, control practices and the predictors among health workers during the pandemic in Ebonyi state, Nigeria.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed into an endemic COVID-19 disease and health workers continue to be at high risk. The situation requires continued use of COVID-19 control measures by health workers and this will likely depend on their sources of information/knowledge/attitude about COVID-19 and previous use of COVID-19 control measures. We explored the COVID-19 information sources, knowledge, attitude, control practices, and the predictors, among health workers in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. We implemented an online-offline analytical cross-sectional survey from March 12 to May 9, 2022 among all c

Identifying and handling unbalanced baseline characteristics in a non-randomized, controlled, multicenter social care nurse intervention study for patients in advanced stages of cancer.

PurposeGiven the psychosocial burdens patients in advanced stages of cancer face, innovative care concepts are needed. At the same time, such vulnerable patient groups are difficult to reach for participation in intervention studies and randomized patient inclusion may not be feasible. This article aims to identify systematic biases respectively selection effects occurring during the recruitment phase and to discuss their potential causes based on a non-randomized, multicenter intervention study with patients in advanced stages of cancer.MethodsPatients diagnosed with at least one of 16 predef

Telephone-based aftercare groups for family carers of people with dementia - results of the effect evaluation of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The care of people with dementia is associated with enormous stress and, in a quarter of cases, leads to depression and anxiety disorders in the caring relatives. A specially designed inpatient psychosomatic rehabilitation (rehab) programme for family carers of people with dementia has proven to be effective but not sustainable. Therefore, the present study aims to increase the sustainability of the inpatient rehab programme by using thematically structured telephone aftercare group sessions. METHODS: The effectiveness of telephone aftercare groups was investigated in a randomized

From informed consent to adherence: factors influencing involvement in mass drug administration with ivermectin for malaria elimination in The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consideration of mass drug administration (MDA) for malaria control in low-endemic settings approaching elimination. However, MDA remains a controversial strategy, as multiple individual, social, and operational factors have shown to affect its acceptability at local levels. This is further complicated by inconsistent definitions of key indicators derived from individual and community involvement-coverage, adherence, and compliance-that cast doubts about the actual and potential epidemiological impact of MDA on disease control and elim

Psychosocial determinants of exercise behavior in Parkinson's disease: a mini-review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by progressive motor and non-motor symptoms that profoundly impact quality of life. Physical exercise has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological intervention with neuroprotective potential, yet adherence rates remain suboptimal. This mini-review synthesizes current evidence on psychosocial determinants influencing exercise behavior in PD patients. Accumulating evidence suggests that psychosocial factors play an important role on exercise engagement, such as self-efficacy, social support, depression

On the dynamics of a COVID-19 model with vaccination and social processes.

Following several nations' removal of COVID-19 restrictions, vaccination became the main COVID-19 control measure. Most countries engaged in massive vaccination to curb the disease's spread. Therefore, it is imperative that policymakers understand COVID-19 dynamics and prospective changes amid variances in COVID-19 vaccine coverage, especially in most African countries where vaccine uptake is generally lower than in high-income countries. This study presents a compartmental model for COVID-19, which incorporates dynamic social processes and vaccination. It is assumed that information about the

Behaviour problems in children with dyslexia.

The association between behaviour problems and dyslexia was assessed in a population sample of 10- to 12-year-old children. Twenty-five dyslexic children and a matched control group were recruited through a screening in primary schools in the city of Bergen, Norway. For the assessment of behaviour problems the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Teacher Self Report (TRF), and Youth Self Report (YSR) were filled out by parents, teachers, and children, respectively. Information on health and developmental factors were obtained from parents on a separate questionnaire designed for the study. The dys

Media literacy education and the awareness-verification gap: A theory of planned behavior perspective on Chinese adolescents' responses to online misinformation.

This study examines how Chinese high school students perceive and respond to online misinformation and how their responses are shaped by school, family, and wider social contexts. Four focus group discussions were conducted with 24 students aged 15-17 from two public high schools in a southeastern coastal city. Thematic analysis identified a gap between students' awareness of misinformation and their verification-related responses. Although participants generally approached online content with caution, verification was selective and more likely when information was perceived as personally rele

[Typhoid fever in Chile 1977-1990: an emergent disease].

The emergence of old and new communicable diseases is becoming an important public health problem in industrialized and developing countries worldwide. Chile experienced, at the end of the seventies and during the eighties, epidemics of several emergent communicable infectious diseases whose relevance as public health problems had steadily decreased in the previous 25 years. The most striking of these epidemics was a severe outbreak of typhoid fever that lasted at least 10 years. The majority of the cases occurred in the urban setting of Santiago. Several investigators suggested, in light of a

Evaluation of Facebook and Twitter Monitoring to Detect Safety Signals for Medical Products: An Analysis of Recent FDA Safety Alerts.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid expansion of the Internet and computing power in recent years has opened up the possibility of using social media for pharmacovigilance. While this general concept has been proposed by many, central questions remain as to whether social media can provide earlier warnings for rare and serious events than traditional signal detection from spontaneous report data. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine whether specific product-adverse event pairs were reported via social media before being reported to the US FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). METHODS: A retrosp

Community navigation intervention for social needs in patients with abnormal mammography: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Effective follow-up care plays a critical role in enhancing breast cancer outcomes, as diagnosing breast cancer in earlier stages can improve mortality and ease treatment burden. Individuals with unmet social needs face greater barriers in completing their follow-up care (e.g., additional imaging, biopsies, and surgery). They are two times less likely to complete follow-up appointments. When patients do not complete follow-up appointments, they are at higher risk of detecting breast cancer at a later stage. We aim to examine how a social needs intervention via community navigation
