The effects of oxytocin on social behavior and eye gaze: Insights from dog-human partnership.

Oxytocin (Oxt) plays a crucial role in forming stable social bonds and promoting social interactions in both humans and animals. During the long history of domestication, dogs have evolved advanced social communication, empathy, and a remarkable ability to perceive and respond to human emotions. Given the effective and intimate social interactions between dogs and humans, the laboratory Beagle dogs have been utilized to model mental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Indeed, ASD-associated Shank3 mutant dogs show impaired social interaction with both conspecifics and heterospeci…

A Novel Head-Fixed Assay for Social Touch in Mice Uncovers Aversive Responses in Two Autism Models.

Social touch, an important aspect of social interaction and communication, is essential to kinship across animal species. How animals experience and respond to social touch has not been thoroughly investigated, in part because of the lack of appropriate assays. Previous studies that examined social touch in freely moving rodents lacked the necessary temporal and spatial control over individual touch interactions. We designed a novel head-fixed assay for social touch in mice, in which the experimenter has complete control to elicit highly stereotyped bouts of social touch between two animals. T…

Proximity as a predictor of social behavior in rats.

BACKGROUND: In studies that measure social behavior of a freely interacting pair rats social behavior of one rat is strongly influenced by the behavior of the other. This prevents evaluating social behavior of one single rat. NEW METHOD: We assessed the motivation to interact socially in a modified open-field, by measuring the time a rat attempted to interact with a co-specific separated by a grid in a birdcage outside of the apparatus. We propose time in front of the birdcage is an indicator of social behavior. RESULTS: We showed that the focal rat allocates more time in front of the birdca

The Theoretical Evolution of Social Memory and the Core Contribution of the Medial Prefrontal Cortex.

Social interaction is a process in which two or more conspecific individual information and engage with one another, mutually influencing each other's behavior. Within this framework, social cognition and social memory constitute fundamental components that enable adaptive social behaviors. Deficits in social cognition and memory have been implicated in various psychiatric disorders since social memory itself represents a core expression of episodic memory. In this review, we summarize the theoretical evolution of understanding the social cognitive memory from the grandmother cell hypothesis t…

An empirical study of older adults' willingness and enthusiasm for informal learning.

INTRODUCTION: As global populations age, promoting informal learning among older adults is crucial for their well-being and social participa … n, better health, and higher life satisfaction showed greater willingness. Mandarin proficiency and social interaction frequency significantly promoted both willingness and enthusiasm. Notably, Mandarin proficiency had the strongest positive effect on participation enthusiasm (odds ratios ranging from 1.33 to 2.22 across frequency levels). Economic status and social …

The Relationship Between Early Pregnancy Depression, Social Support, and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: A Prospective Cohort Study in Xuzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are major causes of maternal-neonatal morbidity/mortality. Emerging evidence links early pregnancy depression to HDP, but the interaction of social support, including its potential mediating and moderating roles remains understudied. This prospective cohort study explored the associations between early pregnancy depression, social support, and HDP risk in Xuzhou, China. METHODS: A cohort of 1,406 pregnant women at ≤12weeks gestation were recruited from a hospital in Xuzhou, China, between July 2024 and July 2025. Depression symptoms and so

Impact of social isolation on circadian rhythmicity and clock genes expression in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice exposed to simulated rotating shiftwork/jetlag.

Circadian rhythms regulate fundamental physiological and behavioral functions, yet are increasingly disrupted by contemporary environmental stressors such as rotating shift work and social isolation. Although each disruptor independently compromises circadian homeostasis, their interactive effects remain insufficiently characterized. Given the role of social cues as non-photic zeitgebers, we investigated whether social isolation exacerbates behavioral and molecular circadian disruption induced by repeated light-dark phase shifts, and whether social interaction confers resilience. Male AKR mice…

Low household income and adolescent mental health.

The association between low household income and adolescent mental health causes continuing concern. We examined the relation between household income and adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems, and explored individual, parental, and neighborhood characteristics. The sample included 872 Dutch adolescents (Mage = 14.93 years) oversampled on risk of psychopathology. Low income was defined as parent-reported net monthly household income below the 20th percentile (<€2000). Internalizing and externalizing problems were examined using the Youth Self-Report and Child Behavior Checklist.

Emotional reactivity and decision-making under social deprivation: the role of trait anxiety during quarantine.

Social isolation measures enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of the social environment in shaping affective states and decision-making. However, the day-to-day experience and psychological recovery from social deprivation, especially among individuals with high trait anxiety, remains poorly understood. We conducted a 10-day longitudinal study with 116 university students returning to campus, collecting approximately 31 000 momentary assessments of affect and social interactions during a 3-day quarantine and subsequent period. Quarantine increased the need for soci…

Personality and EEG correlates of reactive social behavior.

Reactive, as opposed to proactive, behavior during social interactions has been investigated in the study of aggression, but it is virtually unexplored in relation to other kinds of social behavior. Little is known about brain underpinning of these processes. In this study, we used a virtual interaction model to manipulate the emotional display of the interaction partner and to register actor's responses to these manipulations. EEG was recorded throughout the experiment. After the experiment, participants filled in the IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers. Multilevel mediation analysis using emotional…

A Behavioural Assessment of Social Anxiety and Social Motivation in Fragile X, Cornelia de Lange and Rubinstein-Taybi Syndromes.

Unique socio-behavioural phenotypes are reported for individuals with different neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, the effects of adult familiarity and nature of interaction on social anxiety and social motivation were investigated in individuals with fragile X (FXS; n = 20), Cornelia de Lange (CdLS; n = 20) and Rubinstein-Taybi (RTS; n = 20) syndromes, compared to individuals with Down syndrome (DS; n = 20). The Social Anxiety and Motivation Rating Scale was employed whilst participants completed four social tasks, each administered separately by a familiar adult, and also by an unfamiliar a

Relationship of social support and social burden to repeated breast cancer screening in the women's health initiative.

Direct and interactive effects of social support, social burden (caregiving, negative life events, and social strain), education, and income on repeated use of breast cancer screening among a large (N=55,278), national sample of postmenopausal women participating in the Women's Health Initiative observational study were examined. Repeated screening decreased as emotional/informational support and positive social interactions decreased (ps<.01). Repeated mammography decreased with frequent caregiving (p<.01). Less social strain reduced the frequency of repeated breast self-examinations (BSEs; p…

Social Skill Profiles in ADHD and Comorbid Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Many children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demonstrate impairment in social skills. However, ADHD rarely occurs in isolation, with approximately one-third of children with ADHD having one additional disorder, and another third having two or three comorbidities. Few studies have considered the global and specific patterns of social skill performance based on comorbidity status. METHOD: Using a large dataset containing 1400 carefully phenotyped children with ADHD (ages 7-12; 28% girls) in the United States and Canada, we characterized social skill deficit pro

Neural correlates of out-group bias predict social impairment in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Social impairments are a hallmark feature of schizophrenia and are a key predictor of functional disability. Deficits in social information processing likely underlie social impairment; however, this relationship is understudied. We previously demonstrated that patients with schizophrenia fail to habituate to neutral faces, providing evidence for an alteration in basic social information processing. It remains unknown whether patients with schizophrenia also show deficits in processing of more complex social information. Out-group bias provides an excellent opportunity to test comp
