Effects of a community-based social marketing campaign on the social support, self-efficacy, and physical activity of elderly people: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The global elderly population is growing rapidly, and physical inactivity among the elderly remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Implementing structured, theory-driven behavior change strategies that foster social support is essential for successful health promotion among the elderly. This study aims to evaluate whether a community-based social marketing campaign can effectively enhance physical activity, social support, and self-efficacy in the elderly. METHODS: This study is a parallel cluster-randomized controlled trial protocol. A three-month community-based soci

Connected to Others and Kind to Self: Social Connection and Self-Affiliation Change in Open-Ended Psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Social connection predicts health, but remains largely underexplored as an outcome of psychotherapy. A friendly relationship to oneself is linked to positive relationships to others, but it is not clear how they influence each other across time during and after treatment. This study evaluates change in a measure of social connection and support, the Quantity and Quality of Social Relations (QQSR), and investigates its longitudinal associations with the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior Introject self-affiliation. METHODS: 370 adult outpatients in Norway with various presenting

Localized Tissue-Specific Gene Expression and Gene Duplications are Important Sources of Social Morph Differences in a Social Bumblebee.

Understanding the expression of multiple behaviorally and morphologically distinct phenotypes from a single genome represents a fundamental topic in evolutionary biology. Central to the complication of expressing phenotypes, which may differ in their optima, is the sharing of largely the same genome, which is predicted to manifest in conflict at the genomic level. This is particularly true for social insects where molecular mechanisms, such as differential gene expression, contribute to observed phenotypic differences between reproductive and nonreproductive morphs. In comparison, other mechan

The smell of success and failure: the role of intrinsic and extrinsic chemical signals on the social behavior of crayfish.

Animals commonly modify their behavior in the presence of a conspecific or in response to signals. This is particularly true in the context of aggressive exchanges, which animals use to form networks of social relationships and to communicate social status associated with those relationships. Although hierarchical structures are a widespread phenomenon that has been studied extensively, the dynamic communication processes, specifically chemical communication in this review, is relatively overlooked. In particular, it is the exchange of information during agonistic interactions that mediates hi

[COVID-19 in the midst of a "perfect storm" in neoliberal capitalism: critical reflections on its impacts in Brazil].

The impacts of the recent coronavirus pandemic on Brazilian society revealed a scenario that goes beyond a health crisis. This article sets out to present the causes and consequences of a systemic crisis in the neoliberal economic order based on the prominence of markets and social exclusion, while the role of the State - as the guardian of social rights - is neglected. The methodology adopted follows a critical interdisciplinary perspective from the fields of political economy and social sciences, located in socioeconomic reports referred to in this analysis. It is argued that the neoliberal

Why social anxiety persists: an experimental investigation of the role of safety behaviours as a maintaining factor.

Study one used a semi-structured interview to assess the use of safety behaviours in high and low socially anxious participants. As predicted from cognitive models, the high social anxiety group reported using a greater number of safety behaviours, more frequently, in a greater number of situations. Both the high and low social anxiety groups perceived their safety behaviours to be helpful. Study two involved experimentally manipulating the use of safety behaviours and self-focus and demonstrated the use of safety behaviours and self-focused attention to be unhelpful in a number of ways. A note on the presence and sexual dimorphism of midventral glands in African spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus).

Midventral skin glands secrete odors that mediate social contexts and are commonly found in rodents in the Cricetidae family rather than those in the Muridae family. African spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) are rodents in the family Muridae known for their remarkable regenerative abilities, menstruation, tail osteoderms, and unique social behaviors, including cooperative breeding, communal parenting, and low aggression. They are also related to gerbils (Meriones), which are among the few murids that lack preputial glands and instead scent-mark with midventral glands. Acomys also lack preputial gl

Adaptation of Parasocial Relationships in Social Media Scale: its association with loneliness, social media use and life satisfaction.

The advancement of digital technologies, particularly social media, has significantly altered the dynamics of connection formation, making the study of parasocial relationships highly relevant. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the Parasocial Relationships in Social Media Scale (PRISM-TR) within a Turkish sample group. The research involved two distinct sub-studies utilizing different samples. Study I (N = 428 university students) employed comprehensive psychometric methods, including Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Item Response Theory (IRT), and reliability analyses, to

Social cues drive the evolution of plastic pathogen virulence in spatially and temporally variable environments.

Host-pathogen interactions are often characterized by spatial and temporal fluctuations in host density. Such variability may promote the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in pathogen virulence. However, it remains unclear how pathogens can reliably detect changes in host density. Here we show that some pathogens may exploit social cues, such as the presence of infected hosts, to gain indirect information about transmission opportunities when the density of susceptible hosts fluctuates. Our analysis demonstrates that virulence plasticity does not evolve in constant environments, but temporal

How do social network models compare to all-to-all models for forecasting tuberculosis epidemics? A mathematical modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models guide tuberculosis (TB) target-setting, yet most assume homogeneous "all-to-all" mixing. We compared projected intervention impacts between an all-to-all compartmental model and a Barabási-Albert (BA) scale‑free social network model under otherwise identical disease assumptions. METHODS: We calibrated transmission parameters so both models produced similar baseline trends, then introduced vaccination (coverage 30-70%; efficacy 80-95%) and treatment (20-50% increases in recovery) after a 400‑day burn‑in. Outcomes were assessed 300 days post‑intervention. RESULT

Development and Validation of Social Motivation Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Information-seeking (IS) and emotion-regulatory (ER) motivation play meaningful roles in age-related changes in social interaction across adulthood. This study aimed to develop and validate the Social Motivation Questionnaire (SMQ) to assess these two types of motivation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Ten items were selected from a pool as the candidate items of SMQ and were administered to 480 German adults (20-91 years old) for validation. These items were also administered to 150 U.S. (18-40 years old) and 131 Hong Kong younger adults (18 to 26 years old) for cult

Validation of the behavioural and social drivers of influenza vaccine survey in Australia: Cognitive interviews and psychometric evaluation.

Seasonal influenza vaccination reduces the risk of contracting influenza. In Australia, vaccination coverage is consistently low among the most at-risk groups eligible for the free influenza vaccine. To establish an annual national monitoring of the behavioral and social drivers of influenza vaccination, we validated the World Health Organization's Behavioral and Social Drivers of Influenza Vaccination survey. Ours is the first study reporting the validation results of the newly developed survey tool. Two validation stages occurred: first, cognitive interviews and survey item revisions based o

Spiritual emptiness and depression among university students: the roles of perceived support and age.

INTRODUCTION: Spiritual emptiness and depression are becoming increasingly prevalent among Chinese university students. Perceived social support plays a pivotal role in mitigating both spiritual emptiness and depression. This study investigates interrelationships among these three variables within a sample of Chinese university students. METHODS: A total of 1,266 university students in China, encompassing all gender identities and aged 18-30, completed a questionnaire containing the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Multidimensional Sense of Emptiness Scale (MSES

The social supergene dates back to the speciation time of two Solenopsis fire ant species.

Colony social organization of multiple Solenopsis fire ant species is determined by a supergene with two haplotypes SB and Sb, which are similar to X/Y sex chromosomes. The ancestral monogyne (single-queen) social form has been associated with homozygous SB/SB queens, while queens in colonies with the derived polygyne (multi-queen) social structure are heterozygous SB/Sb. By comparing 14 Solenopsis invicta genomes and the outgroup S. fugax, we dated the formation of the supergene to 1.1 (0.7-1.6) million years ago, much older than previous estimates, and close to the estimated time of speciati…

Earthquake Preparedness Among Japanese Hemodialysis Patients in Prefectures Heavily Damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors related to earthquake preparedness in Japanese hemodialysis patients. We focused on three aspects of the related factors: health condition factors, social factors, and the experience of disasters. A mail survey of all the members of the Japan Association of Kidney Disease Patients in three Japanese prefectures (N = 4085) was conducted in March, 2013. We obtained 1841 valid responses for analysis. The health factors covered were: activities of daily living (ADL), mental distress, primary renal diseases, and the duration of dialysis. The socia

Chronic clomipramine treatment reverses core symptom of depression in subordinate tree shrews.

Chronic stress is the major cause of clinical depression. The behavioral signs of depression, including anhedonia, learning and memory deficits, and sleep disruption, result from the damaging effects of stress hormones on specific neural pathways. The Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis) is an aggressive non-human primate with a hierarchical social structure that has become a well-established model of the behavioral, endocrine, and neurobiological changes associated with stress-induced depression. The tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine treats many of the core symptoms of depressi…

Is "relationship fear" unique to Japan? Symptom factors and patient clusters of social anxiety disorder among the Japanese clinical population.

BACKGROUND: There have been only a limited number of cross-cultural studies of social anxiety disorder (SAD), especially as diagnosed with modern operationalized diagnostic criteria and as measured with recently developed assessment instruments. We examined the symptomatological structure and clinical subtypes of patients with DSM-IV SAD among the Japanese clinical population. METHODS: We performed confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses of the joint Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale from 149 psychiatric patients diagnosed with SAD. Based on the derived symptom fac

Women and AIDS in Zimbabwe: the making of an epidemic.

As the AIDS epidemic in Africa assumes major proportions, the need to understand the social context in which heterosexual transmission occurs takes on urgent importance. In this article we explore how the intersection of traditional culture with the colonial legacy and present-day political economy has influenced family structure and sexual relations, and particularly the social position of women. Drawing on Zimbabwe's historical experience, we show how land expropriation, rural impoverishment, and the forcible introduction of male migrant labor fostered new patterns of sexual relations, chara
